Elijah rolled to his feet. His cracked armor leaked purple light.

The second Reaper charged forward. Its tank treads ripped up the floor. It swung its hammer in a wide circle, aiming for Elijah's head.

Elijah ducked. The hammer smashed into one of the giant glass tubes.

The tube shattered. Thousands of gallons of silver soul-water spilled out onto the floor. The souls inside screamed as they hit the dirty metal ground.

Elijah’s anger boiled over. "You do not touch them!" Elijah roared.

Lyra stood perfectly still in the shadow of a large glass tree, just twenty feet behind him. She did not speak. She had no mouth to speak with. She raised her right hand. She focused on the cold water of the darkness around her. "Shadow-Weaving," the System Boy had called it in her mind. Lyra pulled on the fold of the universe. She pulled the darkness out of the tree's shadow and wove it together in her hand. The darkness sharpened. It became a solid, physical blade of matte-black nothingness. It was a sword that absorbed light. She prepared to step out of the shadow and cut the First Sovereign’s head off. "You can come out now, little shadow," Adam said smoothly. He did not turn around. He just kept looking at the ceiling. "I know you are hiding behind the plum tree. You smell like the basement."Lyra’s violet pinprick eyes narrowed. She stepped out of the shadow. She made no sound on the glass floor. She raised the blade of darkness. Adam finally turned around. He looked at her

Back in the present. Lyra sank completely into the shadow of Elijah’s throne. She remembered the feeling of the cold water. She pushed herself into the fold. Instantly, she felt the entire Obsidian Spire. The Spire was a 200-story tower made of black glass. There were thousands of lights inside it. But where there is light, there is shadow. To Lyra, the Spire was not a building anymore. It was an ocean of interconnected dark pools. She felt the shadow under a bed on the 10th floor. She felt the shadow behind a water pump on the 50th floor. She felt the shadow of a crying child in Sector 4. She was looking for Adam the Plumber. Adam’s code was bright, arrogant, and golden. He smelled like vanilla and ozone. He did not belong in the Spire. Lyra scanned the dark pools of the building. Her mind moved at the speed of thought. “There.”She found him. He was on the 150th floor. The Garden Level. Lyra did not walk down the stairs. She did not fly. She simply pushed her body through the f

  • Chapter 246

Lyra sank into the floor of the throne room. She did not melt like ice. She did not fall through a trapdoor. She simply stopped agreeing with the solid glass floor. A moment ago, she was standing in front of King Elijah. Now, she was sinking into the dark shadow cast by his giant, jagged throne. To Marcus and Elijah, she had vanished in a blink of an eye. But for Lyra, moving through the darkness was not instant. It was a process. It was a completely new way of existing. As she slipped down into the absolute dark, she did not hear the loud, blaring red sirens of the Spire anymore. She did not hear the heavy footsteps of the Shadow Legion running to fight the falling Drop-Pods of meat. The world went perfectly silent. She was hunting Adam the Plumber. But to hunt a god, she had to understand what she had become. Her mind flashed back to what had happened just five minutes ago, deep at the bottom of the world, inside the chaotic ink of the Void-Bleed. Five minutes ago, Lyra was ju

Inside the Throne Room, Elijah was plugged into the black glass throne. His purple eyes stared blankly ahead. His Overclocked brain was analyzing the growth of the Crimson Rot in the southern oceans. Marcus stood perfectly still behind the throne, his heavy obsidian spear resting on the floor. Suddenly, the lighting in the room changed. The bright, glowing silver lines on Elijah’s body did not dim, but the shadows in the corners of the massive room suddenly grew darker. They grew longer. They stretched across the black glass floor. Marcus’s silver eye-slits flared bright white. [WARNING: ANOMALOUS ENERGY DETECTED.][THREAT LEVEL: UNKNOWN.]Marcus spun around, raising his heavy spear. The dark violet fire on the tip burned fiercely. He pointed it at a dark corner of the room. "IDENTIFY YOURSELF," Marcus boomed. Elijah did not move his body, but his multi-threaded voice echoed in the room. "Hold your weapon, Commander," Elijah said. His electric voice hummed with sudden, intense

Lyra ignored the System Boy. She focused on the Echo. "If I become a Gap," Lyra asked, "what does that mean for the war?""It means," the Echo answered, "that you cannot be cut. A sword cannot slice a shadow. A laser cannot burn the darkness. A continent of flesh cannot chew on something that is not there. You will be untouchable. You will be the perfect assassin. You will be able to slip through the smallest cracks in the Archangels' logic."Lyra thought about the terrible Crimson Rot eating the oceans. She thought about Adam the Plumber teleporting freely around the Spire. If she was just a girl made of magic code, Adam could probably delete her. If she was a gap in reality, she would be immune to his rules. "And what is the price?" Lyra asked. She was smart enough to know that the Void never gave anything away for free. The Echo seemed to sigh. "The price is Ego Death," the Echo said. "To become a Gap, you must completely forget the idea of 'Lyra the woman.' You must forget the

The Stasis Lantern died. The protective bubble of frozen light popped. For one terrible microsecond, Lyra was nothing. Her human body was already gone, melted by the broken physics of the Void-Bleed. Now, her mind was scattering into the dark, violent ink. But the System Boy was fast. The tiny green spark exploded. Bright, glowing lines of green computer code shot out like a net. The net caught the scattered pieces of Lyra’s mind and pulled them tightly back together. Lyra did not have a body yet. She was just a cluster of glowing green code floating in the absolute blackness. "I have you!" the System Boy's voice echoed in her code-mind. "The old you is gone, Lyra. Now, we build the new you.""Do it," Lyra thought back. Her mind felt incredibly clear. The fear was gone. The human panic was gone. She only felt a cold, sharp focus. But before the System Boy could start writing the new body, the Void-Bleed shifted again. The heavy, swirling violet ink around Lyra stopped moving. It
