Tristan sat still in the back booth, rubbing his thumb along the edge of an old silver tag.

The metal had been worn smooth from years of rubbing against his chest. Engraved on its face was a single name: Douglas Ellis.

To the world, Douglas had died in a small border war that history books never mentioned. But to Tristan, Douglas was the man who had dragged him out of a sea of blood years ago.

Douglas had taken a piece of bomb shrapnel that was meant for Tristan's heart. Before he took his last breath in that muddy trench, he had grabbed Tristan's collar with trembling fingers.

"Promise me, Commander. Promise me you’ll watch over Chloe. Don't let her fall into the hands of the sharks in the city. Protect her, no matter what it takes."

Tristan squeezed the tag tightly in his fist.

He was the leader of the powerful Pyreking Dynasty, controlling huge armies, endless money, and global power that made world leaders bow to him. Yet, he was sitting in a cheap diner wearing a faded jacket and worn-out boots, just to keep a quiet promise he made to his dead brother.

He slid the tag back beneath his collar, picked up two cheap plastic grocery bags containing fresh eggs and bread, and stepped out.

The Ellis family home sat in a middle-class suburb.

Tristan pushed open the back door and stepped quietly into the kitchen. He set the grocery bags on the counter and began putting the items away.

"Look at you, sneaking into the house like a rat looking for scraps.”

A deep voice cut through the silence.

Vivian Ellis stepped into the kitchen, and her eyes swept over Tristan with disgust.

"Do you have any shame at all, Tristan?" Vivian asked, her voice dripping with venom. "It's been six months since you showed up on our doorstep with that fake recommendation letter from Douglas’s old army unit. Six months of eating our food, sleeping in our guest room, and bringing nothing to this household."

Tristan carefully folded the plastic bags and placed them in the drawer. "I paid for the groceries myself, Aunt Vivian."

"With what? The pocket money you earn doing odd jobs at the local repair shop?" Vivian scoffed, walking over to tap her manicured finger against his chest, but his cold aura made her flinch and she stepped back.

"You have no formal education, no family background, and no future. My late husband was foolish enough to write in his journal that you were a man of great honor, but all I see is a parasitic loser leaching off our hospitality!"

Tristan clenched his jaw as his old military training kicked in. After spending twelve years leading secret combat missions, his killer instincts instantly took over. His heart rate dropped, his focus sharpened, and his right hand twitched, a small habit that, in his past, meant he was about to break someone's neck.

He swallowed hard, forcing his anger back down inside himself. He looked at Douglas’s tag resting against his chest. Control yourself, he reminded himself.

She is Douglas’s widow.

"Mother, please. Stop it."

Chloe Ellis stood in the doorway of the kitchen. She looked exhausted, her gaze darted toward Tristan, carrying a mixture of pity, frustration, and affection.

"Why should I stop?" Vivian turned on her daughter. "Chloe, look at him! He's a grown man who spends his afternoons drinking canned coffee on the back porch while you work twelve-hour shifts trying to keep our family company running. If your father were alive, he would see what a mistake it was to let this homeless stray into our home.”

"Tristan helps around the house," Chloe said softly, though her voice lacked conviction.

She turned to Tristan, her expression troubled. "Tristan, maybe you should look for a full-time job. Anything. Just so my mother sees you're trying."

Tristan looked into Chloe's eyes. He could see her struggle. She didn't hate him, but the constant pressure from her mother and the weight of their growing debts were slowly wearing down her trust in him.

He wanted to tell her that with a single phone call, he could hand her the key to the largest conglomerate in the city.

But The Pyreking Dynasty had enemies lurking in every shadow, and revealing his identity now would draw a target directly onto her back.

"I understand, Chloe," Tristan said quietly, "I'll keep looking."

Before Chloe could respond, the rumble of an expensive sports car engine echoed from the driveway, followed by the sharp honk of a horn.

Vivian’s face instantly transformed. The bitter scowl vanished, replaced by a wide smile.

"He’s here. Chloe, fix your hair! Quick!"

A silver Porsche parked near the front steps. The driver's door swung open, and a young man stepped out, smoothing the front of his sharp Italian suit.

Trevor Rhodes, heir to the Rhodes Financial Group, carried himself like someone who had never been told no in his entire life. He held a big bouquet of blue orchids in one hand and a stack of gold-trimmed velvet boxes in the other.

"Aunt Vivian! Chloe!" Trevor greeted them smoothly, walking up the steps. "I hope I'm not interrupting."

"Trevor, darling! Of course not! You're always welcome here," Vivian gushed, practically hovering over him as he handed the flowers to Chloe.

"These are imported from abroad," Trevor said, offering Chloe a warm smile. "I thought they would brighten up your day."

"Thank you, Trevor. They're lovely," Chloe said quietly, accepting the bouquet.

Trevor’s eyes then drifted past Chloe, landing on Tristan, who was standing near the doorway holding a half-empty can of cheap coffee.

Trevor’s smile laced with contempt.

"Oh, Tristan. Still here?" Trevor chuckled, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a silver key ring. "Since you’re standing around doing nothing, go wash my Porsche. There’s some dust on the rear bumper from the highway. Be careful not to scratch the paint, that coat costs more than your life savings."

Vivian laughed aloud at the comment. "Hear that, Tristan? At least make yourself useful for once!"

Trevor's eyes met Tristan's. For three seconds, a chill ran down Trevor's spine, an instinct warning him that he was standing in front of a predator. He stepped back half a step without thinking, his hand trembling slightly against his car keys.

"Is there a problem?" Trevor asked, trying to keep his voice steady to hide his sudden flare of fear.

Tristan slowly took a sip from his canned coffee. "Wash it yourself," he said calmly.

"You insolent Bastard!" Vivian snapped, stepping forward with her hand raised, ready to strike him. "How dare you speak to Young Master Trevor like that!"

"Aunt Vivian, wait," Trevor interrupted, quickly regaining his composure and waving his hand with disdain. "It’s fine. Why get upset with someone who doesn't know any better? A stray dog doesn't understand the value of fine wine."

Trevor reached into his inner suit pocket and pulled out three black cards, holding them up with visible pride.

Vivian’s eyes widened in shock. "Are those VIP entry passes to the Royal Treasure Auction tonight?"

"Indeed," Trevor sneered, shooting Tristan a victorious look. "The entire elite class of the province will be there. More importantly, Lord Bruce, the representative of the legendary The Pyreking Dynasty, is attending to inspect the grand relics. I secured these passes through my family’s connections so you and Chloe can join my table."

Vivian’s face flushed with ecstasy. "The Royal Treasure Auction! Lord Bruce! Trevor, you are a miracle worker!"

She turned to Chloe, grabbing her daughter’s hands excitedly.

"Do you hear this, Chloe? This is our chance! We will take the entire family savings and buy the historical Phoenix Jade seal being auctioned tonight! When we present it to Lord Bruce, our family will be linked to The Pyreking Dynasty forever!"

Chloe looked overwhelmed. "Mother, spending all our savings on one artifact, isn't that too risky?"

"Nonsense!" Vivian snapped, glaring back at Tristan with supreme arrogance. "This is how real nobility operates! Not by hiding in the kitchen counting copper coins like a coward."

Trevor smiled coldly, tossing his car keys lightly in his hand as he looked at Tristan. "Too bad, Tristan. Venues like that have strict dress codes and status checks. People like you aren't even allowed to sweep the floors outside."

Tristan remained silent, his expression unreadable as he took another quiet sip of his cheap coffee.

“Trevor, you talk too much.” He said before turning toward the kitchen direction.
