Ten Minutes Earlier

Alex and Sophia sat side by side in the dimly lit interrogation room, their wrists and ankles cuffed with heavy chains bolted to the floor.

Sophia’s breathing grew ragged.

She hated how the gloom pricked at her brain with worst-case scenarios.

“Alex,” she said quietly, her voice trembling, “do you honestly think we’ll get out of here alive?”

Alex didn’t move at first.

His gaze stayed locked on the metal door. “We will,” he finally muttered. “We’re walking out of this place in one piece. I guarantee it.”

A humorless laugh escaped Sophia’s lips.

“Easy for you to say. You haven’t had nightmares about this creep, Mr. Bernard. His record in the station is as dirty as it gets.”

She swallowed hard, her next words barely above a whisper. “And with Sir Raymond pulling the strings, it’s like they have the entire city in their pocket. We don’t stand a chance.”

Alex turned to face her then—really turned, with a look that pinned her in place. “Sophia, have you ever trusted me?

“Don’t call me mother. I never had a son like you. You’re evil incarnate!”Lucia’s voice cracked, tears spilling down her face, her chest aching as if her heart itself were being torn apart.“Whatever,” William said coldly.“I’ll always be your son. Even when you’re dead, I’ll still be your son—the one who inherits everything you own.”With a vicious swing, the baseball bat smashed against Lucia’s head. The sickening thud echoed through the room. Her body crumpled to the floor.A jagged wound split open on her scalp, blood seeping fast, pooling across the floor, soaking into her clothes, staining his.“Wait…” Lucia gasped, her voice trembling.“What?” William sneered, his eyes blazing with contempt.“Want to beg for forgiveness? You’re already old. What’s the point of living longer? You drove your own daughter away. If you need someone to blame, blame yourself!”“Where… where did you bury Maria’s body?” Lucia whispered, her voice broken with tears and pain.William’s smile twisted int

Everyone carries some regret in life. For Lucia, the regret went back twenty years—when she failed to stop her only daughter from giving her heart to a man with no honor, a poor peasant with nothing to his name.“Maria,” Lucia said, her voice sharp with authority.“You must remember, we come from the family of the Governor of Vinland. You cannot marry a man with no identity, no honor.”“Mother!” Maria cried, tears streaming down her face.“I don’t care about titles or standing. I love him. And he loves me. Why can’t we be together?”Lucia’s tone hardened. “You’re still young. Love fades. Men like him cling to women like you only for power, only for position. He is using you!”Maria’s eyes flared with defiance.“You adopted William as your son! He’s the one you always praise, the perfect man in your eyes—and I’m nothing compared to him.”“Then give him the governor’s seat! I don’t want any of it. All I want is to be with the man I love.”“That is impossible!” Lucia thundered. And so, i

Jose shot up from his chair the instant he heard the rumble of a car speeding down the street.“It’s William’s car.”He rushed to the back door, hoping to find Josephine, but all that greeted him was a pile of garbage she had been about to throw out.His stomach dropped.“That fucking bastard! He took her!” Jose’s rage shook his voice. He stormed into the house, heading straight for the keys to his truck.“Where are you going?” Lucia asked, alarm flashing in her eyes.“William kidnapped Josephine. That bastard’s gone too far!”“Don’t be too harsh with him,” Lucia warned softly.Jose spun on her, eyes burning.“Harsh? This is on you!” Jose roared.“You spoiled him, coddled him, sheltered him from every damn consequence. Look at what you’ve made—he’s no man, he’s a goddamn monster! I warned you—one day he’ll kill you, and he’ll take the rest of us down with him!”He yanked the drawer open, ripped out his gun, and slammed the cylinder full of bullets, his hands shaking with rage.“I’m do

The night grew heavy. Shadows stretched long across the small house as Alex sat quietly by the crackling fireplace, the flames painting his face in flickering gold.Across from him, old José sat hunched in his worn wooden chair.Neither spoke. The only sound was the faint crackle of the flames.Josephine stepped softly from the back room, her voice gentle.“Lucia’s asleep.” She moved closer and sat down beside Alex, the glow of the fire warming her face. For a long moment, silence hung over them. Then José stirred suddenly, rising to his feet. “How could I forget? I haven’t served you a drink.”“I’ll help,” Josephine said quickly, springing up before he could refuse. He glanced at her, sighing as though carrying the weight of unspoken words.“You… ah, never mind.” Shaking his head, he pointed her toward the tea.José lowered himself back into the chair, his tired eyes watching Josephine prepare the tea.Something in them shimmered—age, memory, sorrow. The shine of unshed tears.Joseph

When Lyra ended the call, another phone rang.“Alex,” an elderly man’s voice came through, warm but formal.“You promised you’d come check on our health. When will I have that honor?”Alex leaned back. “Well, I can come right now—if you know where to find me and send someone to pick me up.”“Of course! How could I not know where the God’s Hand doctor is? We’ve been waiting patiently for our turn to be honored by your visit.”“I’ll send my people for you immediately. Will that be acceptable?”Alex glanced at Josephine, a sly smile forming. “Fine—but I’ll be bringing a young woman with me. Is that alright?”“Certainly, certainly. Bring anyone you like. We will treat them with the same highest hospitality we give you.”“No need for special treatment. Just treat her like usual,” Alex chuckled, then hung up.He turned to Josephine. “Pack your clothes. We’re going to Vinland.”Josephine’s eyes widened.“Vinland State? That’s the most beautiful place in the country! Lakes, forests, everythin

In the state of Mexica, Governor Benito Diaz sat in his office, the weight of recent events still pounding in his head.Hours ago, he’d watched the new king execute the Governor of Colombia. The image wouldn’t leave his mind.Since the king’s decree just a few hours ago, the government offices were swarming with officials, their voices clashing in heated debates over how to respond.Papers piled high, phones rang without pause, and the tension was thick enough to choke on.It was clear they were in for a long night—every light in the building would burn until dawn, because by tomorrow morning, the press would demand an answer.“Sir Governor,” a secretary stepped in, voice tight.“The people are waiting for your decision. Will we keep producing weapons like we have for the last two hundred years… or stop and switch to farming?”Benito’s eyes hardened. “Call everyone here.
