BOOM!

The pillar of golden light pierced the heavens.

The fractured sky of the Shadow Realm trembled violently.

Spatial cracks spread in every direction.

Mountains collapsed.

Rivers of darkness surged backward.

For a brief moment, it seemed as though the entire Shattered Expanse had come alive.

Everyone felt it.

Every soldier.

Every cultivator.

Every living creature within thousands of miles.

A fragment of the Sovereign had awakened.

And it was angry.

The battlefield descended into chaos.

Thousands of warriors instinctively stepped back.

Even Darius' elite troops looked uneasy.

Because the pressure emanating from the fortress wasn't merely powerful.

It was ancient.

Ancient enough to make even immortals feel insignificant.

Ethan's soul reacted immediately.

The First Fragment.

The Second Fragment.

Both began vibrating.

Resonating.

Calling out to the newly awakened fragment.

A strange warmth spread throughout his body.

For the first time since entering the Shadow Realm, he felt complete.

Not fully complete.

But closer.

As though a missing piece was finally within reach.

The sensation was intoxicating.

Dangerously intoxicating.

"Your Majesty!"

Aurelius' voice snapped him back to reality.

Ethan looked up.

The former general's expression had darkened.

"Something's wrong."

The words immediately caught his attention.

Because Aurelius wasn't looking at the fortress.

He was looking beneath it.

Deep beneath it.

The ground itself had begun shaking.

Not from the fragment.

From something else.

Something waking up.

The Shadow Queen suddenly stepped forward.

Her silver eyes widened.

"No."

The single word carried genuine alarm.

Selene immediately turned toward her.

"What is it?"

The ruler of the Shadow Realm didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she stared at the trembling earth.

Then her face lost all color.

"It's waking up."

Silence.

Nobody liked the sound of that.

Especially because the Shadow Queen looked afraid.

Truly afraid.

And fear didn't seem like an emotion she experienced often.

Ethan narrowed his eyes.

"What is waking up?"

The answer came from Kael.

The prison image flickered violently.

The Third General's face had become pale.

Far paler than before.

"The Guardian."

The battlefield became silent.

Darius frowned.

For the first time since arriving, uncertainty appeared on his face.

"What guardian?"

Kael laughed bitterly.

"The one I told you not to disturb."

The Seventh General's expression darkened.

Immediately.

Clearly, he remembered that conversation.

And judging by his reaction, he had ignored it.

A decision he was now regretting.

The shaking intensified.

Massive cracks spread across the fortress foundations.

Ancient defensive formations began failing.

One after another.

Thousands of runes shattered.

The golden pillar continued growing brighter.

Stronger.

Wilder.

The fragment was completely out of control.

Then—

CRACK!

The earth split open.

A canyon appeared directly beneath the fortress.

Several towers collapsed instantly.

Soldiers screamed.

Entire sections of the stronghold vanished into darkness.

Darius immediately barked orders.

"Stabilize the formations!"

Hundreds of cultivators moved.

Energy surged throughout the fortress.

Yet nothing happened.

The damage continued spreading.

The situation was beyond their control.

Far beyond.

Then a sound emerged from beneath the earth.

A heartbeat.

THUMP.

The entire Shattered Expanse trembled.

THUMP.

Several mountains exploded.

THUMP.

The fractured sky darkened.

Every person present froze.

Because they realized something horrifying.

The sound wasn't loud because the creature was close.

The sound was loud because the creature was enormous.

Unimaginably enormous.

The heartbeat continued.

Slow.

Steady.

Ancient.

And with every pulse, the pressure across the battlefield increased.

Ethan felt the fragments inside his soul react.

Not with fear.

Recognition.

The realization sent a chill down his spine.

The fragments knew this thing.

Which meant the Sovereign had known it.

Five thousand years ago.

Perhaps even longer.

The ground exploded.

A colossal claw emerged from the abyss.

Black scales.

Golden runes.

Each claw larger than a mountain.

The battlefield descended into panic.

Soldiers fled.

Cultivators abandoned formation.

Even Darius' army broke ranks.

Nobody wanted to remain near whatever was emerging.

The claw gripped the edge of the canyon.

Then another appeared.

Then another.

Then a gigantic head slowly rose from the darkness.

A dragon.

No.

Calling it a dragon felt inadequate.

The creature dwarfed mountains.

Its golden eyes resembled miniature suns.

Its scales appeared forged from living night.

Ancient chains wrapped around portions of its body.

Broken chains.

Recently broken chains.

The beast slowly opened its eyes.

And the world became silent.

Every living creature instinctively lowered their heads.

Not because they wanted to.

Because their bodies demanded it.

Authority.

Pure authority.

Older than kingdoms.

Older than realms.

Older than history.

The dragon looked around.

Its gaze swept across the battlefield.

Across Darius.

Across the armies.

Across the fortress.

Then finally—

It stopped on Ethan.

The fragments inside his soul erupted.

Golden flames surged around his body.

The dragon froze.

Several seconds passed.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then the colossal creature slowly lowered its head.

The battlefield stared in disbelief.

Even Aurelius looked stunned.

The dragon's voice echoed across reality.

Deep.

Ancient.

Powerful.

A voice that sounded like worlds colliding.

"My Sovereign."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

The creature closed its enormous eyes.

And bowed.

The gesture shook the entire Shadow Realm.

Darius' face immediately lost all color.

Because he finally understood.

The guardian wasn't protecting the fragment.

The guardian belonged to the Sovereign.

And Darius had just spent five thousand years imprisoning it beneath his fortress.

The dragon opened one eye.

Then looked directly at the Seventh General.

Its gaze became cold.

Very cold.

"You."

The single word carried enough pressure to crack mountains.

Darius instinctively stepped back.

For the first time.

The Seventh General was afraid.

The dragon's golden eyes narrowed.

And then it spoke the words that changed everything.

"You smell like the Celestial Emperor."

The battlefield froze.

Including Ethan.

Because if the dragon was telling the truth...

Then Darius wasn't merely a betrayer.

He had been working with the Celestial Emperor all along.
