The tunnel swallowed the last sound of gunfire.

Adrian landed in ankle-deep water, his shoulder striking the concrete wall hard enough to send pain down his arm. He forced himself upright before the others could notice his injury.

“Keep moving.”

Hale stumbled behind him, breathing heavily. Evelyn held the files against her chest, while the double followed without a word, looking as though he had walked through the tunnel before.

Adrian called Ren four times. Each attempt ended in voicemail. He tried again after several minutes, but the result remained the same. Ren was not answering, and Adrian was beginning to suspect that the silence meant more than a dead phone or a missed call.Evelyn helped Marcus Hale settle against the side of an abandoned railcar after they climbed out of the maintenance tunnel. The older man was pale from blood loss, and his injured arm had begun to bleed through the bandage again. She tightened it while Adrian watched the road ahead. The other Adrian stood a short distance away, his attention fixed on the railway yard. He had barely spoken since Ren’s call.“What are you remembering now?” Adrian asked him.The double looked over. “A warehouse.”“Which warehouse?”“I don’t know. I was standing outside it. Someone was inside, begging me not to close the door.”Adrian studied his face. “Were you the one inside or outside?”“I don’t know.”The answer irritated him more than it should ha

Evelyn held the files against her chest, while the double followed without a word, looking as though he had walked through the tunnel before.Adrian removed the black band from his pocket. Its display glowed faintly in the darkness, revealing the number 0002. He stared at it until the number stopped feeling like a mistake.“Don’t,” the double said quietly. “It doesn’t mean what you think.”“What do I think?”“That it makes you the copy.”Adrian slipped the band back into his pocket. “Then what does it mean?”“I don’t know. I only know I wouldn’t trust it.”They continued through the passage as scraps of paper and dead leaves floated towards a drain. Behind them, metal struck metal, and a faint red l

  • Chapter 20: No way out

The last lock slammed into place.Adrian reached the northern door a second too late. He drove his shoulder against it, but the metal barely moved. A second strike sent pain through his arm without loosening the frame.Behind him, Claire lowered the black device.“Stop wasting your strength.”Adrian turned, knife raised. “Open the doors.”“Not until you listen.”“You just trapped four people in a building with someone who claims to know why I died.”“Five,” the double corrected quietly.Nobody looked at him.Claire glanced toward the broken windows. “Six, if you count the person outside.”Adrian went still.Beyond the glass, a shadow moved between two abandoned buses. Then came the faint scrape of metal against metal.Someone was trying to enter.Hale struggled to his feet. “How many?”“I don’t know,” Claire answered. “But they followed me here.”“You led them to us?” Evelyn demanded.“I led them away from the original facility.”“By bringing them here?”“Would you prefer they found t

The light changed,” Evelyn whispered.Nobody in the depot moved. Dust drifted through the gray light from the broken windows. Somewhere outside, loose metal clattered against a fence, carried by the wind through streets that had not yet learned to fear the dark.“When I signed the report, the observation glass went from dark to bright for a second. I thought it was a power flicker.” Her fingers trembled around the plastic sleeve. “Someone turned on a lamp behind it.”The double watched her. “You remember.”“I remember not looking.”Adrian tightened his grip on the band. The number 0001 was stamped beneath the casing, cold against his palm. “Who was behind the glass?”The double didn’t answer. His eyes had shifted to the bench, where Hale sat very still, one hand pressed against his bandage. Sweat darkened the collar of his shirt despite the chill inside the depot.“Ask him.”Hale’s face went the color of paper. “I don’t know who you mean.”“Marcus,” Evelyn said quietly.“I don’t know.

The receipt said he was the replacement.Adrian found it pressed flat beneath the spot where the band had lain, a slip from Meridian Biosciences dated September 12, 2026, printed at 11:47 p.m., the exact minute his file said he died. One line was legible:Participant equipment: replacement. He read it three times. Beside him, the note on the pillow sat where he'd left it, in his own cramped block capitals. I'm sorry. I needed it more than you.Evelyn took the receipt from his fingers. Her face changed as she read."You recognize it," Adrian said."The terminology.""That isn't an explanation.""No," she said. "It isn't."Hale pushed off the wall, one hand pressed to his side. "Continuity markers were issued so the system could identify the pattern it was working with. If yours was a replacement, someone already had the original.""And I woke up wearing the spare."Nobody answered. Overhead, the ceiling panel hummed its fake sunrise, and Adrian thought of a man at 4:12 a.m. walking thr

Wrong one.The words had followed Adrian out of the hospital and into the street. The bare wrist. The two taps. The bus passing between them.Evelyn touched his uninjured arm. "We need to move.""The band is in my apartment. If he's already used his, I need to know what it does.""You're bleeding, Hale's bleeding, and armed men are looking for us.""Then we do it fast."Hale pressed a hand to his side. "She's right about one thing. We can't walk into another trap.""You've had a lot of opinions about my belongings today," Adrian said, and Hale's expression closed. An engine rumbled nearby. Adrian steered them into an alley between two warehouses and came out beside a pharmacy with its shutters half lowered. He checked the street and tried the side door. It opened with a soft creak.A young pharmacist looked up from the counter. His eyes went to the blood on Adrian's forearm, then to Hale's stained jacket."There's a hospital three blocks from here.""We've had enough of hospitals."Th
