Three Storm Giants dropped into the Sanctuary.
6-Star each. SSS-Rank Board beasts. Ten feet tall, bodies made of living hurricane, eyes like pressure gauges. The kind of beast they use to put down rogue A-Rank tamers. The kind my parents faced fifteen years ago.
Behind them, Director Vale. Not in Cole black. In Board white - five corporations stitched into one coat. Old, bald, scarred throat from a beast backlash. The man who signed my parents' execution order.
"Commander Reyes, you are interfering with corporate recovery of stolen Monarch property," Vale said, voice like gravel. "That slime king, those eggs, that dragon with a broken contract - all Cole intellectual property."
Reyes stood at the ripped membrane door, her own beast - an A-Rank Iron Falcon - screaming above her, but she was outranked. "This is a Federal Sanctuary under the original Tamer Accords. You need a warrant from all five families to -"
"I am the warrant," Vale said, and his Storm Giants stepped forward.
Zara didn't wait. "Jorm!"
Jorm roared and slammed Absolute Zero Domain again. The entire bunker flash-froze. Frost crawled up the Storm Giants' legs.
It should have stopped them. Absolute Zero stops everything.
The Giants kept walking. Frost cracked off them. They were wind - you can't freeze wind.
First Giant swung. Hit Jorm in the ribs. A 6-Star Sovereign Dragon - even Mythic - skidded ten feet. Zara screamed as backlash hit her through the bond.
Second Giant turned to Grim and the two baby slimes behind him.
That's when Grim opened his Void Maw.
It wasn't a mouth. It was a hole. In his chest, where a heart should be, reality tore open - black, star-filled, hungry. The same void that had eaten my Rift Fever when I was five.
The Storm Giant's wind arm got too close.
It disappeared.
No explosion. No struggle. One second a hurricane fist, next second gone, devoured.
The Giant howled - wind beasts can feel when part of them is eaten.
[Skill Activated: Void Maw - Devours Energy / Skills / Contracts]
[Energy Absorbed: +50 Points - Storm Giant Arm]
[Grim - Abyss Sovereign Slime King - Hunger Rising]
Vale's eyes widened for the first time. "Void Devourer... you actually hatched one."
Grim didn't stop. He stepped forward, King to King, and put his hand on the second Giant's chest.
You are made of forced wind, he said out loud, voice clearer now, deeper. I eat forced.
He tore. The Giant's core - a spinning storm pearl - ripped out and vanished into his Maw.
The beast collapsed into normal air.
Marcus grabbed me. "Liam! He's eating too much! Soul link!"
He was right. Through the bond I felt Grim's hunger spiking. Void Devourers don't have a limit, Codex had warned. If he eats too much without evolving, he could eat himself.
"Grim, enough! Hold!"
Grim obeyed. Barely. He closed his Maw, but his crown was blazing.
The third Giant hesitated. Even S-Rank beasts know a predator.
Vale saw it. He tapped his wrist. "All Board units, Monarch Sanctuary, lethal authorization. Code Black."
Above us, the Old Bridge shook. More boots.
Reyes shouted, "Evelyn, the Accord terminal! Activate Sanctuary lockdown!"
Evelyn was already at the ancient Federal console in the corner, the one my Mom had used. "I need Monarch energy to lock it! Liam, I need 20 points!"
I had 50 from Grim's feast. I had soul burn still healing.
I slammed my hand on the console.
[Energy Transferred: 20 Points > Federal Sanctuary Lock]
[Sanctuary Lockdown Initiated - 60 Seconds - No Entry / No Exit]
Steel shutters - older than Cole, Monarch-grade - slammed down over the membrane door, cutting Vale and his third Giant off from reinforcements. Cutting us off from escape.
We were locked in with a Board Director and a 6-Star Storm Giant.
Zara laughed, sharp, competitive, finally all in. "Now it's fair. Three on three."
"Four," Marcus said, Luna flaring bright, healing light washing over me and Zara and Grim, sealing my nosebleed. "Support counts."
Gale shrieked from Grim's crown and dove, Phoenix Gust igniting with Luna's light - a healing firestorm that hit the last Giant straight in its core.
Jorm and Grim moved together - Sovereign Dragon and Slime King, trash and heir, both told they were defective. Jorm froze the Giant solid, Grim shattered it with Sovereign Pressure.
The Giant fell.
Silence, except for the alarm and Gale chirping victory on the Giant's frozen head.
Vale stood alone, his three S-Rank beasts devoured or shattered by what the appraisal machines called F-Rank and defective.
He looked at me, at Grim, at the two baby slimes now clinging to Grim's legs.
"You think you won?" he whispered. "You just proved our point. Monarchs are uncontrollable. The Board meets in 48 hours now, not 72. We will vote to reclassify Monarch talent as a national threat. We will send the Tamer Army to burn this district to find those 310 eggs."
He pressed something on his coat and vanished - Board teleport tech, illegal for anyone but Directors.
The lockdown shutters stayed down. We were safe for 60 seconds.
Evelyn ran to the console. "Liam, look at what Grim's Maw opened."
Where Grim had eaten the second Giant's core, the air hadn't closed. It was a hole. Not a rift. Deeper. A tunnel made of void, leading down, under the city, where no scanner had ever reached.
And from inside it, faint, like a radio through water, a woman's voice.
"...Grim? Little Monarch? If you can hear this, we're still alive. Don't come alone. The Deep Rift is hungry..."
Mom.
Marcus grabbed my arm. "Was that -"
Reyes stared at the hole, her A-Rank composure gone. "That's the Deep Rift. The first rift ever. We sealed it fifteen years ago after your parents went in. Nothing comes back from there."
Grim knelt, his King crown dimming, and touched the edge of the void tunnel with one finger. The tunnel stabilized.
I can hold it open, he said. For my little Monarch. To find them.
Behind us, the two baby slimes - now awake - chose. One wobbled to Marcus, one to a stunned kid from Mama K's noodle stand who'd followed us through the tunnels.
New bonds. New Monarch tamers. F-Rank kids the machines said were worthless, now holding Void eggs.
Zara looked at me, at the tunnel, at Jorm, at her father's teleport afterglow.
"Guild rule number two?" she asked.
I took a breath, Level 10, B-Rank license in my pocket, soul still burning, parents' voice still echoing from a rift everyone said was death.
"We don't leave our own in the deep."
And I stepped into the void.

CHAPTER 15: Monarch Guild
The shutters didn't fall open. They slammed shut.Monarch-grade steel, older than Cole, older than the Board - sealing the Sanctuary bunker with 312 kids, 610 Void eggs, and Mama K's newly evolved Ash Phoenix inside. Safe. For now.On the wrong side of them were me, Zara, Marcus, Evelyn, Reyes, Jorm, Gale, and a half-melted membrane door. And on the other side of that - the Board Army."Seal it!" Vale was shouting at the Rift Seal truck driver. "Seal the Deep Rift! Bury the source!"The truck's dish - a black thing that looked like an inverted appraisal machine - swung toward the void tunnel Grim was holding open from the other side. Where my parents were.If that dish fired, it would collapse the Deep Rift permanently. My parents, thirty survivors, 300 eggs, and Grim holding an ocean would be cut off forever. Buried alive in hunger.Zara saw it before I did. "Liam, that's a Federal Deep Seal. It was used to close the first Rift fifteen years ago. It kills Monarch energy."Marcus grab
CHAPTER 14: Distribution
Vale's voice coming down a collapsing void tunnel shouldn't be possible. Board tech shouldn't reach the Deep Rift.Unless they'd been siphoning it for thirty years and knew exactly how."Tunnel's closing!" Zara shouted, Jorm roaring and blasting Absolute Zero at the edges to freeze it open.Grim was on his knees in the Void ocean, both hands submerged, stabilizing the entire Deep Rift. If he let go, the island and my parents and thirty Monarch survivors would fall back into hunger."Go!" Dad shouted at me. "The eggs! The Sanctuary! We can hold here for ten minutes!"Mom grabbed my face, quick. "Don't be a hero, be a Monarch. Monarchs share."I didn't argue. I grabbed Zara's wrist, Zara grabbed Marcus, Marcus grabbed Evelyn and Reyes, and Grim - with a roar that shook the void - tore a piece of his own crown off and threw it at me.The crown shard became a door.We fell out of the Deep Rift and landed hard back in the Sanctuary bunker. And the lockdown had failed.Steel shutters were h
CHAPTER 13: Deep Rift
Stepping into Grim's Void Maw wasn't falling. It was being remembered. The void didn't have color. It had memory. For a second I was five again, burning with Rift Fever, Mom's hand on my forehead, Dad saying "hold on, little Monarch." Then I was ten, getting stamped F-Rank while Grim, hidden in my backpack as a trash slime, pulsed against my back saying not trash. Then I landed. Not on ground. On water. Black water that held me up. An ocean of slime - Void ocean - stretching forever under a sky that was the inside of a rift, stars made of appraisal errors. And in the middle of it, an island. Made of stasis pods. And tents. And a kitchen table with two mugs.People looked up. Twenty, maybe thirty. All older, all in old Monarch crests, faded. Tamers who were supposed to be executed fifteen years ago.In front of them, two people who I only knew from a holo.Mom didn't look fifteen years older. She looked tired. Dad had a beard now, and a Void Slime - not Grim, bigger, scarred - on his s

CHAPTER 11: Sanctuary
The door wasn't a door. It was a membrane. The concrete of the subway tunnel rippled like slime - like Grim's skin - and parted when I got close. No handle. No scanner. It recognized Monarch blood.Behind it wasn't a room. It was a bunker the size of Warehouse 4, buried under Old Tamer District since before the city was built.Lights came on automatically. Cold, white, Federal-grade, but old. Fifteen years old.Rows. Hundreds of rows of stasis pods, floor to ceiling, each one holding a slime egg. Not Shadow Slimes. These were black, void-black, with starlight inside, just like Grim's core. Monarch eggs.Evelyn made a noise that was half gasp, half sob. "This is... this is the Monarch Sanctuary. The Bureau said it was a myth. That the Monarch team destroyed their research before execution."Zara's hand went to Jorm's neck. Even Jorm went quiet. Dragons know when they're in a graveyard.Marcus whispered, "Liam, look."In the center of the bunker was a table. Not a lab table. A kitchen t
CHAPTER 10: King
Grim had never spoken out loud. For fifteen years he'd been a trash slime. Mute. Kicked. Appraised as F. Even after evolving to Battle Slime, he only spoke through the bond, one word at a time. Now he had a mouth. Wobbly, made of void-black slime, but a mouth."I remember you, little Monarch. Do you remember me now?"The memory hit me harder than soul burn. Not a System screen. A real memory. I was five. Burning up with Rift Fever - the disease kids get when they live too close to the first Echo Rifts. My parents - Mom in a Tamer lab coat, Dad with a Monarch crest on his shoulder - crying over me. No healer could fix it.Dad held an egg. Not a beast egg. A Monarch egg. Black, pulsing with void light. Stolen from Cole's vault."If we bond it to him, it will eat the fever," Mom whispered. "But Cole will kill us for stealing a Mythic.""Let them," Dad said, and put the egg on my chest. The egg cracked and poured into me - not as a beast, as a shadow that sealed itself over my heart. A sl
