Zara Cole had never carried her own beast.
S-Rank heirs don't. They have carriers, handlers, med-teams. The beast is an asset, not a partner.
Now she was on her knees in my ruined lab, holding a six-meter Frost Wyrm that was trying not to die on her, and her hands were covered in its black blood.
"Don't you dare," she whispered to it, voice cracking. "Don't you dare quit on me."
The Wyrm - Jorm, she'd called him once on a billboard - made a weak sound. Frost fell off his scales like ash. The Bloodline Contract collar Cole puts on all heir beasts was glowing red around his neck, choking him.
Evelyn knelt fast, scanner out. "Stage 4 de-evolution. Contract is forcing his core to shrink. If it shrinks past 3-Star, it will rupture. Two hours, maybe less."
Marcus looked at me. "Liam, you just fought a 5-Star Hound. You're Level 10, you're burned -"
"I know."
I did. My left hand was still bandaged, my energy was low after suppressing the Hound. Evolving Grim to King was supposed to be my priority for Zara's fight tomorrow.
But this was the core struggle. Not rank. Not money. If the System says trash is trash, can trash prove the System wrong?
Cole said this dragon was trash now. Defective. Shameful. Put it down.
Zara was looking at me, and for the first time since I met her, there was no pride, no sharp tongue. Just a tamer begging another tamer to save her partner.
"Please," she said. It cost her everything to say it.
I put my good hand on Jorm's cold snout.
[Scanning: Frost Wyrm - S-Rank - Contracted]
[Status: Cursed - Corporate Bloodline Contract Lv.3]
[De-evolution: 6-Star > 4-Star and falling]
[Evolution Path Blocked by Contract]
[Solution: Break Contract first, then evolve]
[Cost to Break Contract: 30 Energy Points + Monarch Pressure]
[Cost to Evolve: 40 Energy Points - Target: Winter Sovereign Dragon]
[Total Cost: 70 Points - Current Energy: 68 Points]
Two points short. Even after absorbing the Hound.
Codex was quiet. Host. You can overdraft. Use your own life energy. Risk: soul burn.
I didn't hesitate. I had done it once already in the warehouse, shielding Grim.
I pressed my forehead against Jorm's.
"Grim. Gale. With me."
Grim put his big slime hand on my shoulder. Gale - still a chick - wobbled over and put his crooked wing on my other hand. Marcus put his hand on my back without being asked. Evelyn put hers on Jorm's collar.
Family of rejects.
"Break," I ordered.
Not to Jorm. To the collar.
Monarch Pressure flooded out of me, Level 10, raw, dominant. It wasn't a skill, it was a command to a system that thought it owned beasts.
The collar sparked. The red light fought me. Cole tech vs. Monarch talent.
[Monarch Pressure vs. Bloodline Contract...]
[Contract Breaking... 20%... 50%...]
[Energy Overdraft: -2 Points from Host Soul]
Pain shot through my chest like ice. My vision went white. I heard Zara shout.
Then snap.
The collar broke. Fell to the floor in two smoking pieces.
Jorm gasped - a real breath for the first time in months.
"Now EVOLVE!" I shouted, pouring everything I had left into him.
[Contract Broken! Evolution Path Unlocked!]
[Energy Consumed: 70 Points - Soul Burn Warning!]
[Frost Wyrm > Winter Sovereign Dragon!]
Blue light didn't just cover Jorm. It exploded. The whole auto-shop lit up like a stadium.
The grey, dying scales shed. White frost didn't fall off - it grew. Wings that had been clipped by contract stretched twice their size, translucent like northern lights. Horns of pure ice formed. His eyes, dull grey before, opened bright winter-blue.
He didn't just get bigger. He became sovereign. A 6-Star that felt like 7.
He threw his head back and roared. Not a dying cough. A dragon's roar that shook dust off the Old Bridge above us.
[Evolution Successful: Frost Wyrm > Winter Sovereign Dragon (6-Star Mythic Variant)]
[Curse Cleansed]
[New Skill Unlocked: Absolute Zero Domain]
[Loyalty to Zara: 150% - Beyond Contract]
Zara fell back on her ass, staring at her partner - no, at her Sovereign - crying and laughing at the same time. Jorm lowered his massive head and gently, so gently, nuzzled her, covering her in frost that didn't burn.
"You... you did it," she whispered to me, tears cutting through the grime on her face. "You made trash into a Sovereign."
"He was never trash," I said, my knees buckling. Marcus caught me. My nose was bleeding from soul burn. "Your family just told him he was."
Grim caught me on the other side, holding me up. Gale chirped proudly from the top of Jorm's new horn, where he'd flown.
Evelyn was scanning, hands shaking. "Energy signature... Liam, that evolution was 6-Star to 6-Star Mythic, but it read as 7-Star potential. City-wide scanners will have picked that up. Bureau, Cole - everyone -"
As if on cue, her old Bureau radio, still on the floor, screamed.
"...Massive Mythic evolution detected, Old Tamer District, Old Bridge auto-shop! All units converge! Repeat, Mythic-level evolution without license!"
And outside, through the destroyed doorway, not one but three Cole Phantom cars slid to a stop. Doors opened. Not handlers this time.
S-Rank Tamers. In Cole uniforms.
And in the middle car, a man in a white suit who I'd only seen on billboards.
CEO Cole. Zara's father.
He looked at his daughter sitting in the dirt hugging a dragon that was supposed to be dead, at me bleeding but standing, at the broken collar at my feet.
His face didn't show anger. It showed calculation.
"So," he said, voice calm, carrying across the lot. "You are the Monarch."
Zara stood up, placing herself between me and her father, her new Sovereign dragon growling behind her.
"Dad, don't -"
"Zara, step away from that F-Rank," CEO Cole said. "He just destroyed fifty million credits of corporate property."
He looked straight at me.
"You have two choices, Liam Shaw. Work for me and I make you S-Rank by morning. Or I take that slime and that bird and that dragon apart to find out how you do it."
Behind him, the first Bureau sirens finally started wailing.
And in my head, Codex flashed a notification that wasn't about energy at all.

CHAPTER 15: Monarch Guild
The shutters didn't fall open. They slammed shut.Monarch-grade steel, older than Cole, older than the Board - sealing the Sanctuary bunker with 312 kids, 610 Void eggs, and Mama K's newly evolved Ash Phoenix inside. Safe. For now.On the wrong side of them were me, Zara, Marcus, Evelyn, Reyes, Jorm, Gale, and a half-melted membrane door. And on the other side of that - the Board Army."Seal it!" Vale was shouting at the Rift Seal truck driver. "Seal the Deep Rift! Bury the source!"The truck's dish - a black thing that looked like an inverted appraisal machine - swung toward the void tunnel Grim was holding open from the other side. Where my parents were.If that dish fired, it would collapse the Deep Rift permanently. My parents, thirty survivors, 300 eggs, and Grim holding an ocean would be cut off forever. Buried alive in hunger.Zara saw it before I did. "Liam, that's a Federal Deep Seal. It was used to close the first Rift fifteen years ago. It kills Monarch energy."Marcus grab
CHAPTER 14: Distribution
Vale's voice coming down a collapsing void tunnel shouldn't be possible. Board tech shouldn't reach the Deep Rift.Unless they'd been siphoning it for thirty years and knew exactly how."Tunnel's closing!" Zara shouted, Jorm roaring and blasting Absolute Zero at the edges to freeze it open.Grim was on his knees in the Void ocean, both hands submerged, stabilizing the entire Deep Rift. If he let go, the island and my parents and thirty Monarch survivors would fall back into hunger."Go!" Dad shouted at me. "The eggs! The Sanctuary! We can hold here for ten minutes!"Mom grabbed my face, quick. "Don't be a hero, be a Monarch. Monarchs share."I didn't argue. I grabbed Zara's wrist, Zara grabbed Marcus, Marcus grabbed Evelyn and Reyes, and Grim - with a roar that shook the void - tore a piece of his own crown off and threw it at me.The crown shard became a door.We fell out of the Deep Rift and landed hard back in the Sanctuary bunker. And the lockdown had failed.Steel shutters were h
CHAPTER 13: Deep Rift
Stepping into Grim's Void Maw wasn't falling. It was being remembered. The void didn't have color. It had memory. For a second I was five again, burning with Rift Fever, Mom's hand on my forehead, Dad saying "hold on, little Monarch." Then I was ten, getting stamped F-Rank while Grim, hidden in my backpack as a trash slime, pulsed against my back saying not trash. Then I landed. Not on ground. On water. Black water that held me up. An ocean of slime - Void ocean - stretching forever under a sky that was the inside of a rift, stars made of appraisal errors. And in the middle of it, an island. Made of stasis pods. And tents. And a kitchen table with two mugs.People looked up. Twenty, maybe thirty. All older, all in old Monarch crests, faded. Tamers who were supposed to be executed fifteen years ago.In front of them, two people who I only knew from a holo.Mom didn't look fifteen years older. She looked tired. Dad had a beard now, and a Void Slime - not Grim, bigger, scarred - on his s
CHAPTER 12: Board
Three Storm Giants dropped into the Sanctuary.6-Star each. SSS-Rank Board beasts. Ten feet tall, bodies made of living hurricane, eyes like pressure gauges. The kind of beast they use to put down rogue A-Rank tamers. The kind my parents faced fifteen years ago.Behind them, Director Vale. Not in Cole black. In Board white - five corporations stitched into one coat. Old, bald, scarred throat from a beast backlash. The man who signed my parents' execution order."Commander Reyes, you are interfering with corporate recovery of stolen Monarch property," Vale said, voice like gravel. "That slime king, those eggs, that dragon with a broken contract - all Cole intellectual property."Reyes stood at the ripped membrane door, her own beast - an A-Rank Iron Falcon - screaming above her, but she was outranked. "This is a Federal Sanctuary under the original Tamer Accords. You need a warrant from all five families to -""I am the warrant," Vale said, and his Storm Giants stepped forward.Zara di
CHAPTER 11: Sanctuary
The door wasn't a door. It was a membrane. The concrete of the subway tunnel rippled like slime - like Grim's skin - and parted when I got close. No handle. No scanner. It recognized Monarch blood.Behind it wasn't a room. It was a bunker the size of Warehouse 4, buried under Old Tamer District since before the city was built.Lights came on automatically. Cold, white, Federal-grade, but old. Fifteen years old.Rows. Hundreds of rows of stasis pods, floor to ceiling, each one holding a slime egg. Not Shadow Slimes. These were black, void-black, with starlight inside, just like Grim's core. Monarch eggs.Evelyn made a noise that was half gasp, half sob. "This is... this is the Monarch Sanctuary. The Bureau said it was a myth. That the Monarch team destroyed their research before execution."Zara's hand went to Jorm's neck. Even Jorm went quiet. Dragons know when they're in a graveyard.Marcus whispered, "Liam, look."In the center of the bunker was a table. Not a lab table. A kitchen t
CHAPTER 10: King
Grim had never spoken out loud. For fifteen years he'd been a trash slime. Mute. Kicked. Appraised as F. Even after evolving to Battle Slime, he only spoke through the bond, one word at a time. Now he had a mouth. Wobbly, made of void-black slime, but a mouth."I remember you, little Monarch. Do you remember me now?"The memory hit me harder than soul burn. Not a System screen. A real memory. I was five. Burning up with Rift Fever - the disease kids get when they live too close to the first Echo Rifts. My parents - Mom in a Tamer lab coat, Dad with a Monarch crest on his shoulder - crying over me. No healer could fix it.Dad held an egg. Not a beast egg. A Monarch egg. Black, pulsing with void light. Stolen from Cole's vault."If we bond it to him, it will eat the fever," Mom whispered. "But Cole will kill us for stealing a Mythic.""Let them," Dad said, and put the egg on my chest. The egg cracked and poured into me - not as a beast, as a shadow that sealed itself over my heart. A sl
