CEO Cole didn't raise his voice. Men who own half the city's appraisal machines don't need to.
"Zara, step away from that F-Rank. He just destroyed fifty million credits of corporate property and you are standing in a crime scene."
He said it like he was correcting a PowerPoint slide.
Zara didn't move. She stood between me and three S-Rank tamers in Cole black, her torn jacket covered in Jorm's black blood from before, now melting into clean frost. Behind her, Jorm - no longer a dying wyrm, now a Winter Sovereign Dragon with wings like aurora - lowered his head and growled at his own owner. The air around him dropped twenty degrees.
"Dad, you ordered him put down," Zara said, and her sharp, prideful voice was shaking. "You told me he was defective. You put that collar on him."
"It was a business decision," Cole said. "De-evolving beasts devalue the brand. You let sentiment compromise -"
"He's not a brand. He's my partner."
That was the first time I'd ever heard Zara Cole sound like a tamer from Old Tamer District, not a billboard.
Cole looked past her at me. At Grim, who was standing in front of me even though his arm was still dented from the Iron Hound. At Gale, who had puffed himself up to twice his size on Jorm's horn to look scary and failed.
"Mr. Shaw," Cole said, switching back to corporate calm. "Let's be rational. You are Level 10 with two beasts and a soul burn. You are officially F-Rank. I can make you S-Rank by morning. Independent guild license, Federal lab, unlimited cores. All you have to do is come work for Cole. Evolve what we tell you to evolve. Your friends keep their jobs."
He made it sound reasonable. That's how they get you. Merit over birth, as long as birth gets a cut.
I wiped the blood from my nose. Marcus was holding me up, Luna glowing faintly trying to heal my soul burn.
"You executed my parents for stealing an egg," I said.
The whole lot went quiet. Even the S-Rank tamers.
Cole's calm face didn't change, but his eyes flickered. "I don't know what -"
"Don't." My voice was low, but Codex pushed Monarch Pressure behind it and even the S-Rank beasts flinched. "Fifteen years ago. Monarch team. My parents. You had them executed for stealing a Monarch egg. That egg was Grim."
Grim pulsed against my leg. Through the bond I felt something I'd never felt from him before. Not loyalty. Memory. Grief.
...little one... hid you...
Grim remembered.
CEO Cole sighed, like I was being difficult. "Your parents were idealists. They thought any trash could be Mythic. They stole corporate property - a 7-Star Monarch egg from our vault - and tried to bond it to their own child to prove it. The Board ordered containment. It was legal at the time."
Legal.
Evelyn made a sound like she'd been punched. "You reclassified a child as property so you could kill his parents legally?"
"Business," Cole said again. "Which brings us back to my offer."
He nodded to his tamers. "Take the beasts. Non-lethal for the dragon - Zara still has shares. Lethal is acceptable for the slime and the bird."
Three S-Rank beasts materialized - Steel Mantis, Thunder Wolf, Crystal Golem. All 5-Star, all collared.
Zara didn't wait for me.
"Jorm! Absolute Zero Domain!"
Jorm roared.
The entire auto-shop lot flash-froze. Not ice - absolute zero. Time slowed. The Steel Mantis mid-leap hung in air, frost forming on its blades. The Thunder Wolf's lightning fizzled into snow. Even the Cole tamers' boots froze to the ground.
It was Mythic. A skill a 6-Star shouldn't have.
"Zara Cole!" Cole shouted, finally angry. "You are defecting!"
"I'm disowning," Zara shouted back, tears freezing on her face. "I quit!"
She looked at me. "Liam, go!"
I didn't go. That's not what a Monarch does when someone finally chooses him over birth.
"Grim! Gale! Combine!"
It was insane. Gale was 1-Star, Grim was 2-Star, both exhausted. But I'd seen the System notification back in the warehouse - [Beast Fusion - Temporary] was locked until Level 35. But I had something else - 150% loyalty and a dragon who owed me his life.
Grim grabbed Gale. Gale chirped, terrified, and then - instead of fusing with Grim - shot straight at Jorm's Domain.
Gust + Absolute Zero = Blizzard.
Gale's tiny, pathetic wind skill caught Jorm's Mythic ice and spun it into a whiteout blizzard that swallowed the entire lot. You couldn't see. You couldn't breathe. Cole's tamers shouted, their beasts losing targeting.
And through the whiteout, I felt Grim's hand grab mine.
Run, little Monarch. Like before.
The same words from the warehouse. From fifteen years ago.
We didn't run out the front. Marcus yanked open the back tunnel hatch and we dove - me, Grim, Gale, Evelyn, Zara and Jorm shrinking himself to fit, barely - into the Old Tamer District subway maintenance tunnels as Bureau sirens finally screamed into the lot above.
We landed in filthy water, in the dark, breathing hard. Above us, we could hear Bureau shouting, Cole shouting, Jorm's Domain cracking.
Marcus's Luna lit up, showing the tunnel - graffiti that said MONARCH WAS HERE in kid's handwriting from years ago.
Evelyn grabbed my arm. "Liam, you broke a Bloodline Contract and triggered a Mythic evolution without a license. Bureau has to promote you now. They can't blacklist you anymore. You forced merit over birth."
Zara was holding Jorm's head, her S-Rank heiress hands now dirty like ours. "My father will send the Board. Five corporations. They run the appraisal machines nationally. You just declared war on all of them."
I leaned against the wet wall, soul burn making my chest feel hollow. Grim was in my lap, his slime body dim.
Then System lit up - not blue. Gold.

Grim looked up at me with those two light-dots. For the first time, he had a mouth. A slime mouth, wobbly, but a mouth.
And he spoke - not through the bond. Out loud. With a voice that sounded like it had been waiting fifteen years.
"I remember you, little Monarch. Do you remember me now?"
Behind him, in the dark tunnel, Gale sneezed and evolved.

CHAPTER 15: Monarch Guild
The shutters didn't fall open. They slammed shut.Monarch-grade steel, older than Cole, older than the Board - sealing the Sanctuary bunker with 312 kids, 610 Void eggs, and Mama K's newly evolved Ash Phoenix inside. Safe. For now.On the wrong side of them were me, Zara, Marcus, Evelyn, Reyes, Jorm, Gale, and a half-melted membrane door. And on the other side of that - the Board Army."Seal it!" Vale was shouting at the Rift Seal truck driver. "Seal the Deep Rift! Bury the source!"The truck's dish - a black thing that looked like an inverted appraisal machine - swung toward the void tunnel Grim was holding open from the other side. Where my parents were.If that dish fired, it would collapse the Deep Rift permanently. My parents, thirty survivors, 300 eggs, and Grim holding an ocean would be cut off forever. Buried alive in hunger.Zara saw it before I did. "Liam, that's a Federal Deep Seal. It was used to close the first Rift fifteen years ago. It kills Monarch energy."Marcus grab
CHAPTER 14: Distribution
Vale's voice coming down a collapsing void tunnel shouldn't be possible. Board tech shouldn't reach the Deep Rift.Unless they'd been siphoning it for thirty years and knew exactly how."Tunnel's closing!" Zara shouted, Jorm roaring and blasting Absolute Zero at the edges to freeze it open.Grim was on his knees in the Void ocean, both hands submerged, stabilizing the entire Deep Rift. If he let go, the island and my parents and thirty Monarch survivors would fall back into hunger."Go!" Dad shouted at me. "The eggs! The Sanctuary! We can hold here for ten minutes!"Mom grabbed my face, quick. "Don't be a hero, be a Monarch. Monarchs share."I didn't argue. I grabbed Zara's wrist, Zara grabbed Marcus, Marcus grabbed Evelyn and Reyes, and Grim - with a roar that shook the void - tore a piece of his own crown off and threw it at me.The crown shard became a door.We fell out of the Deep Rift and landed hard back in the Sanctuary bunker. And the lockdown had failed.Steel shutters were h
CHAPTER 13: Deep Rift
Stepping into Grim's Void Maw wasn't falling. It was being remembered. The void didn't have color. It had memory. For a second I was five again, burning with Rift Fever, Mom's hand on my forehead, Dad saying "hold on, little Monarch." Then I was ten, getting stamped F-Rank while Grim, hidden in my backpack as a trash slime, pulsed against my back saying not trash. Then I landed. Not on ground. On water. Black water that held me up. An ocean of slime - Void ocean - stretching forever under a sky that was the inside of a rift, stars made of appraisal errors. And in the middle of it, an island. Made of stasis pods. And tents. And a kitchen table with two mugs.People looked up. Twenty, maybe thirty. All older, all in old Monarch crests, faded. Tamers who were supposed to be executed fifteen years ago.In front of them, two people who I only knew from a holo.Mom didn't look fifteen years older. She looked tired. Dad had a beard now, and a Void Slime - not Grim, bigger, scarred - on his s
CHAPTER 12: Board
Three Storm Giants dropped into the Sanctuary.6-Star each. SSS-Rank Board beasts. Ten feet tall, bodies made of living hurricane, eyes like pressure gauges. The kind of beast they use to put down rogue A-Rank tamers. The kind my parents faced fifteen years ago.Behind them, Director Vale. Not in Cole black. In Board white - five corporations stitched into one coat. Old, bald, scarred throat from a beast backlash. The man who signed my parents' execution order."Commander Reyes, you are interfering with corporate recovery of stolen Monarch property," Vale said, voice like gravel. "That slime king, those eggs, that dragon with a broken contract - all Cole intellectual property."Reyes stood at the ripped membrane door, her own beast - an A-Rank Iron Falcon - screaming above her, but she was outranked. "This is a Federal Sanctuary under the original Tamer Accords. You need a warrant from all five families to -""I am the warrant," Vale said, and his Storm Giants stepped forward.Zara di
CHAPTER 11: Sanctuary
The door wasn't a door. It was a membrane. The concrete of the subway tunnel rippled like slime - like Grim's skin - and parted when I got close. No handle. No scanner. It recognized Monarch blood.Behind it wasn't a room. It was a bunker the size of Warehouse 4, buried under Old Tamer District since before the city was built.Lights came on automatically. Cold, white, Federal-grade, but old. Fifteen years old.Rows. Hundreds of rows of stasis pods, floor to ceiling, each one holding a slime egg. Not Shadow Slimes. These were black, void-black, with starlight inside, just like Grim's core. Monarch eggs.Evelyn made a noise that was half gasp, half sob. "This is... this is the Monarch Sanctuary. The Bureau said it was a myth. That the Monarch team destroyed their research before execution."Zara's hand went to Jorm's neck. Even Jorm went quiet. Dragons know when they're in a graveyard.Marcus whispered, "Liam, look."In the center of the bunker was a table. Not a lab table. A kitchen t
CHAPTER 10: King
Grim had never spoken out loud. For fifteen years he'd been a trash slime. Mute. Kicked. Appraised as F. Even after evolving to Battle Slime, he only spoke through the bond, one word at a time. Now he had a mouth. Wobbly, made of void-black slime, but a mouth."I remember you, little Monarch. Do you remember me now?"The memory hit me harder than soul burn. Not a System screen. A real memory. I was five. Burning up with Rift Fever - the disease kids get when they live too close to the first Echo Rifts. My parents - Mom in a Tamer lab coat, Dad with a Monarch crest on his shoulder - crying over me. No healer could fix it.Dad held an egg. Not a beast egg. A Monarch egg. Black, pulsing with void light. Stolen from Cole's vault."If we bond it to him, it will eat the fever," Mom whispered. "But Cole will kill us for stealing a Mythic.""Let them," Dad said, and put the egg on my chest. The egg cracked and poured into me - not as a beast, as a shadow that sealed itself over my heart.
