The van’s engine roared as it sped through the backstreets, weaving through alleys and underpasses, the city’s chaos closing in around them. The rush of wind was drowned out by the sound of Jake’s thoughts, the adrenaline still coursing through his veins. They’d made it out, but barely. The ambush had come so fast that the taste of it was still sharp in the back of his throat.

He glanced at the others, each one a mix of exhaustion and determination. Reeva’s eyes were narrowed, her fingers tapping the side of her rifle. Lina sat quietly, her hand gripping the edge of her seat, but her eyes were alive, constantly scanning, never settling. Elena was beside him, her face tense, lips pressed into a thin line.
