Chapter 7

The Rolls-Royce convoy glided through Manhattan, in silence.

Ethan couldn’t stop looking out the window. The buildings he'd passed a thousand times, the deli where he bought coffee, the laundromat where he washed his work clothes, the bus stop where he'd waited in the rain, they all looked different now. Like he was seeing them through someone else's eyes.

Every few seconds, he glanced at Victor.

The old man sat perfectly still. His hands folded over his cane. His eyes were closed and he looked like he was meditating, or sleeping, or simply existing in a state of calm that Ethan couldn't begin to understand.

Ethan looked at his own reflection in the window. He was looking dirty and his clothes were torn.

He looked away.

Victor opened his eyes. "You're wondering why I'm not more emotional," he said quietly.

Ethan blinked. "I…"

"Twenty-eight years," Victor continued. "Twenty-eight years of searching, hoping, and grieving." His voice was soft, and almost distant. "And now you're sitting next to me, and I feel... peace."

Ethan didn't know what to say.

Victor smiled. "You'll understand someday. When you've waited that long for something, the moment it arrives isn't chaos. It's stillness."

 Victor reached into a leather folio beside him and handed Ethan two items,  a brand-new, flagship smartphone, and a matte black card.

Ethan stared at both items without taking them. He had never owned an expensive phone.

He had never owned a phone that didn't have a broken screen, let alone a flagship model. And the card, it was entirely black except for his own name embossed in silver, was something he had never seen in real life. An unlimited Centurion card.

He hesitated, shaking his head.

"Take them," Victor said gently.

Ethan didn't take it, he was still staring skeptically.

"Ethan. Take them."

Slowly, hesitantly, Ethan reached out. He touched the  phone first. It was cold, smooth, and expensive in a way he couldn't quite articulate.

Victor offered a warm, reassuring smile. "The phone isn’t for luxury, Ethan. It’s already programmed with a handful of important contacts. It is so you can reach me at any hour, day or night."

Victor held his gaze. "If you need me, you call. No appointments and no permission."

Ethan's throat tightened and he looked down at the black metal. "And the card?"

"You’ll need clothes," Victor said simply.

Ethan immediately tried to hand the card back. "I don't need expensive things. A few shirts from a department store will be enough. I don't want to waste your…"

Victor gently pushed Ethan's hand back. "You aren't changing who you are, Ethan. You are simply dressing for the life you were born into." Victor glanced at Ethan's torn, prison-issued clothing and the dirt on his face. "Besides, you can’t meet your family dressed for prison."

Victor smiled and tapped the driver's partition. The glass slid down a few inches.

"Stop here."

The convoy slowed. Pulled to the curb. Ethan looked out the window. It wasn't the Sterling Tower, it was

one of Manhattan's most exclusive luxury boutiques. Ethan recognized the name. He'd seen it in magazines. The kind of place celebrities and the rich do their shopping.

He'd never imagined stepping foot inside.

Victor didn't make a move to get out. Instead, he looked at Ethan. "Go inside."

Ethan blinked. "Alone?"

Victor nodded. He wanted Ethan to begin making his own decisions, "This is your first decision," Victor interrupted gently. "Go inside. Choose what you want. Begin making choices for yourself."

Ethan's heart hammered. "I can't do this alone."

Victor's smile was warm. "Yes, you can."

He reached over and squeezed Ethan's shoulder.

Before Ethan opened the door, Victor gave him one final instruction.

"If anyone gives you trouble..." Victor smiled, a quiet, dangerous kind of warmth. "Call me."

Ethan nodded uncertainly. Carrying nothing but the phone and the black card, he stepped out onto the pavement.

He walked toward the boutique.

The windows were tall and expensive. Mannequins dressed in suits that probably cost more than his mother's hospital bills. The lighting inside was warm and golden, shining onto the sidewalk like an invitation.

Ethan gently pushed open the door.

The bell chimed.

And the world changed.

~~~~~~~~~
The interior of the boutique was unlike anything Ethan had ever seen. Everything worth more than his yearly construction salary. Instantly, Ethan felt the crushing weight of his appearance.
He was wearing dirty, oversized clothing. His face was bruised and swollen. His work boots left faint dust prints on the white marble.
The sales staff noticed him immediately.
Whispers broke out near the registers. One associate rolled her eyes, clearly assuming he had wandered into the wrong building to ask for directions or use the restroom.
"Can I help you, sir?"
Ethan swallowed his pride and approached the nearest associate. "Excuse me. I'd like to see a simple suit, please."
Her eyes flickered to his jumpsuit, his boots, and to the bruises on his face.
"Of course," she said. "Right this way."
She led him to a corner of the store. The clearance rack. The items that had been returned, damaged, and marked down.
Ethan frowned a little.
"I was hoping for something..." He paused. "Something nicer."
The young lady looked Ethan up and down with visible disdain. "Sir, our suits start at five thousand dollars. It is obvious you can't afford it. Please, the exit is right behind you."
The atmosphere felt suffocatingly uncomfortable. Ethan gripped the black card in his pocket, unsure of how to respond to her.
“You don't have to worry about that, Miss. I can pay.”
The associate's smile tightened. "I'm afraid our tailored suits are made to order. They require a fitting appointment. Perhaps you'd like to schedule…"
"I can wait."
She blinked. "I'm sorry?"
Ethan straightened his shoulders. "I can wait. For a fitting. I'm not in a hurry."
The associate stared at him. Her perfect composure snapped just slightly.
Then someone else spoke.
"Ethan?"
The voice was familiar. Ethan's stomach dropped as he turned. Walking out of the VIP fitting area was Damien Cross. Beside him, clinging to his arm and wearing a brand-new designer dress, was Kim.
"Well, well. Look who they let out of lockup."
Kim gasped, her hand flying to her mouth in a mocking horror. "Honestly, Ethan... what are you doing here? Did you get lost?"
Damien sneered, stepping closer to inspect Ethan's swollen face. "I told you he was a rat. Looks like he got exactly what he deserved in holding. What's the matter, Ethan? Did you come here to beg me for bail money? You're a little late."
The sales associate's eyes darted between them. "You know this gentleman, Mr. Cross?"
"Know him?" Damien laughed. "He's a construction worker. The one who got arrested for corporate espionage."
The associate's expression shifted. And stared at him with disgust from head to toe.
"I see," she said flatly.
"Did you win the lottery?" Damien's voice was loud. Deliberately loud. People were starting to look. "Did you find a wallet on the street? What's the angle here?"
"Damien, I don't want any trouble. I just want to…"
"To what? Buy a suit?" Damien laughed again. "With what money, Ethan? You couldn't afford a tie in this place."
The sales associate cleared her throat. "Mr. Cross, perhaps we should…"
"No, no." Damien waved her off. "I want to see how this plays out. Ethan, show me. Show me what you were planning to buy."
Ethan stood frozen. The eyes of the entire boutique were on him now. From customers to the staff. Everyone was watching the spectacle unfold.
Ethan tightened his jaw. He slowly pulled the black Centurion card from his pocket and placed it on the glass display counter. "I'm here to buy clothes."
The sales associate stared at the card. Then, he looked at Damien. His smile faltered for the briefest second.
Damien let out a loud, mocking laugh. "A black card? You?" He turned to the associate. "Check the name. It's either a fake he bought online, or he pickpocketed someone."
"Sir, we don’t allow counterfeit cards," the sales associate said sharply, sliding the card back across the glass without even swiping it.
"You're pretending to be rich now?" Kim laughed, shaking her head. "This is actually sad, Ethan. You're running a scam in a place like this?"
Damien snatched it from his hand before Ethan could react. He turned it over and examined it. The color drained from his face.
"This isn't real," he said. "You bought this online. There's no way you have a Centurion card."
"Damien, give it back…"
"Is that what poverty has reduced you to?" Damien's voice was rising now. "You're walking into high-end stores with counterfeit cards, trying to steal…"
"It's not counterfeit."
"Where did you get it?" Damien demanded.
"I told you. I was given it."
"By who? Your imaginary friend?" Damien laughed, but there was no humor in it. "Ethan, this is pathetic. You're pathetic. You think you can just walk in here and pretend to be something you're not?"
The sales associate stepped forward. "You have to leave before I call security.”
 "See?" Damien gestured triumphantly. "You're a fraud, Ethan. A complete and total fraud."
The card was still in Damien's hand. Ethan reached for it.
"Give it back."
"Or what?" Damien held it above his head. "You'll call security? You'll…"
"Damien." Ethan's voice was quiet but hard. "Give it back. Now."
Something in his tone made Damien pause.
Another employee joined them then a teenager in the corner subtly raised their phone, the red recording light blinking.
Across the room, someone else was watching.
Sophia Hart had just entered the boutique for a scheduled fitting. She paused by the displays, watching Ethan. She recognized him instantly from the viral arrest footage. She stayed silent, her gaze shifting to Damien, carefully observing how Damien was currently acting like a vicious bully.
 "What is the meaning of this?"
The store manager pushed through the gathering crowd. He had been watching what was happening through the CCTV camera. He took one look at Ethan's boots and dirty swollen face, then turned to Damien with an apologetic smile.
"Mr. Cross, I am so sorry for the disturbance." He turned his glare onto Ethan. "Mr. Cross is one of our VIP clients. Take your fake plastic and leave my store before I call security and have you arrested for trespassing."
Ethan felt surrounded, exactly like what happened before. The same humiliation, the same mocking faces. But he didn't argue, he wasn't alone.
He remembered Victor's words. “If anyone troubles you... call me.”
Quietly, Ethan pulled out the new flagship phone. He pressed the single contact on the screen. It rang only once.
"Are you alright?" Victor answered calmly.
"They're refusing me service," Ethan said quietly. "The manager is threatening to call security. They said the card is fake."
"Wait for me."
Then, the line went dead.
Damien scoffed. "Who was that? Your parole officer?"
Ethan just stood there, waiting.
Thirty seconds later, the store manager's phone buzzed in her pocket. She frowned and checked the screen. Her face went pale. It was the Regional Director.
The manager hurried a few steps away to answer. "Yes, sir? What? No, I…"
Before the call finished, the boutique's main landline began to ring frantically. Another sales associate answered, his eyes widening. "Sir... it's the Luxury Division President."
The manager dropped his cell phone. A terrified silence fell over the staff. Damien frowned, sensing the mood in the room but not understanding it. "What's going on? Throw this beggar out!"
Through the massive glass storefront, tires screeched.
A black Maybach slammed to a halt directly on the curb, ignoring the parking zones. The doors flew open. The actual owner of the boutique's parent company, a billionaire in his own right, sprinted out of the car, completely ignoring his driver. He looked panicked.
He burst through the boutique doors, with his chest heaving, and his eyes frantically scanning the room. His store was reported by a high-profile name in the country.
Damien smiled smoothly and stepped forward to greet him. "Sir! It's a pleasure. I was just telling your manager to get rid of this thief…"
The owner didn't even look at Damien.
He walked directly past him, brushing Damien's shoulder in his haste, and marched straight toward Ethan.
The entire room watched in stunned silence as the owner of one of the most powerful fashion empires in the world stopped in front of a dirty poor looking boy in prison clothes.
The owner bowed.
"Sir," the owner said, his voice trembling slightly. "I offer my deepest, most profound apologies on behalf of my entire staff."
Damien was stunned. He let out a forced, breathy laugh. "There... there has to be some mistake."
He pointed an accusatory finger at Ethan. "He's a construction worker! Yesterday he was begging me for money. Today you’re bowing to him?"
The owner slowly stood upright. He turned toward Damien. All the panic from moments ago vanished, and was covered by a cold, furious stare.
"Mr. Cross..." The owner stepped forward,  his voice echoing in the dead-silent boutique.
He paused.
"...Do you have any idea who you've been insulting?"
    Chapter 6"I’m taking my grandson home."Victor’s voice wasn't loud, but it made Ethan stare at him, with his mind completely refusing to process the words. ‘Grandson and home’ Just a few hours ago, he had been on his knees in a puddle of spilled soy sauce and crushed lobster, begging Damien Cross for a few wet hundred-dollar bills while wealthy strangers laughed. Now, the patriarch of the wealthiest empire in the country was standing in front of him, claiming him as blood."I can't," Ethan said, shaking his head slowly as he backed away from the open cell door.Victor looked at him, his expression was entirely calm, almost serene. "You can, Ethan.""No, you don't understand," Ethan insisted, his voice rising in panic as he pointed to the steel bars. "I'm under arrest. I was caught at the Hart Group.     Chapter 5"No."Ethan stepped back, dragging his muddy work boots through the cell's grime until his shoulders hit the cold iron bars. The silence in the cell was suffocating, broken just by the distant, little sound of the television.Victor kept his cool. He simply waited, He simply folded his hands over the silver head of his cane, waiting and watching Ethan with an expression that held no judgment. Only patience. The patience of a man who had waited twenty-eight years and could wait a few minutes more."I'm not opening it," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. He hugged his arms tightly around his aching chest, trying to suppress the tremors running through his body."Why?" Victor asked quietly."Because if I open it..." Ethan's voice snapped, making a rough sound. "Then one of us is lying. And if you're telling the truth..
    Chapter 4Ethan pressed his back harder into the damp corner of the cell, his chest was heaving. Every sharp breath sent an uneven spike of pain through his bruised ribs. He stared at the immaculate, elderly man standing in the center of the filth. He didn't understand anything he was saying. “Victor Sterling.”The name echoed in Ethan’s ringing ears, but it didn't make any sense. Suddenly, a dry, raspy laugh tore its way out of Ethan’s throat. It was a pathetic sound, devoid of humor, and it ended in a wet cough. He wiped the dried blood from his split lip with the back of his trembling, dirt-stained hand. "Right. Let me guess. Damien sent you, didn't he? This is another one of his games. Humiliate the garbage boy, film his reaction, post it online for a few million views.”Ethan’s voice shook, with unshed tears and pure exhaustion. He tried to push himself up straighter against the wall, but his bruised ribs screamed and he slumped back, breathing hard. "Is this his new game? Havi
But he could still hear it. He opened them and looked through the steel bars. He saw his bruised, terrified face flashed on the screen. Below his picture, the bold red letters read: ‘CORPORATE THIEF CAUGHT.’"No," Ethan choked out. He wiped his nose, smearing the blood across his cheek. "I didn't do anything. I am honest. I'm just a cleaner."While he was crying, he heard someone coming towards the cell. ‘Clack. Clack. Clack.’A police guard stopped in front of Ethan's cell. He held a wooden baton and tapped it against the steel bars.
He didn't look at anybody he got and ran. He pushed through the glass doors of the hotel and onto the busy sidewalk. "Please!" He grabbed a man in a gray suit by the sleeve. "My mom is dying. I just need a few dollars. Please."The man yanked his arm away, wiping his sleeve like Ethan had infected him. "Get off me, junkie."Ethan also fell but he held himself. "Help! Anyone!" he yelled, acting like a madman and crying. A woman in a red coat tossed a single quarter at his feet and kept walking. A group of teenagers sitting on a bench pointed at him and laughed loudly. Ethan fell to his knees on the hard concrete. He covered his face with dirty hands, sobbing. He had failed."Hey. Stop crying."Ethan looked up. An old man wearing a faded blue delivery cap sat on a rusty bicycle near the curb."B
