The Director ordered Amero to get me a Prefect who would get me a uniform and show me around.
He was to return to the office after calling an emergency meeting with the Council. We left the Director’s office and stood at the shores of a receding sea of people. “Wish!” called out Amero. A short girl who was walking in the opposite direction looked back. She run-walked towards us. Her eyes were seductively low. Her nose was small and compact. It was perfectly placed above a pair of full glossy lips. Her breasts were round and generous to her small yet chubby form. The long hills that were her hips and thighs filled out her pants to the brim. The badge on her shirt was green. Her pendant had two interlinking hexagons, just like Tanaka’s. “Good afternoon Deputy.” she said. Her intonation was light and graceful. Amero pushed me forward. Something that I noticed that he was in the habit off. I caught a whiff of her scent. It was sweet and warm, like the aroma of a bakery. “This is David. He’s a new student, get him a uniform and show him where he’ll be sleeping.” “Yes sir.” Amero entered the Director’s office and banged the door shut. “My name is Wish”, she said, “I’m the Head Prefect for girls at the Academy.” “David”, I said, “And I don’t know what the hell is going on.” She giggled, “I’d be afraid of you if you did, come on.” We exited the foyer through the left. As we walked down the corridor, I peeked into the four classrooms to my right. All of them were packed with students attentively listening to the teachers upfront and taking notes. The teachers, I realized, had bronze badges but no pendants. The last classroom on the block however was different. Instead of desks and chairs, it had rows of long white tables and tall stools. It reminded me of the lab from my high school where we did science lessons. On the tables in front of the students were large, black rat-like corpses on silver trays. The students picked up the tiny blades next to the trays as they listened to the teacher upfront who was pointing at different parts of a diagram on the whiteboard. We ascended a flight of stairs after the science lab. Finally, we arrived outside a door on the second floor. It was placed in between the four classrooms, serving as the third door on the corridor. We entered after knocking. An elderly lady with pins in her mouth was measuring a long brown cloth that hung from a mannequin with a female anatomy. “Good afternoon Ms. Luceal.” said Wish. “Hey Wish.” She looked at me. “Stray huh.” she said. She walked over to a large closet that covered the entire left side of the room. She opened it. It was tightly packed, nearly brimming, with coats, shirts, and pants in groups of varying sizes. “He is?” inquired Wish as she analyzed me, “How’d you know?” “I can smell the confusion off of him.” I wasn’t quite offended by her words. She was right. Even though I was beginning to digest the reality of the Association’s existence, I was still trying to mull over the taste of the revelation. She handed me the clothes then proceeded to a large metal trunk on the right side of the room. I noticed through the wall length mirror that there was a lesson in progress in the next room. Upfront was voluptuous yet elderly south American woman with long white hair and eyebrows of the same colour. “Here.” Ms. Luceal handed me a pair of boots. I noticed that her badge was also bronze. She returned to her work. “Thank you ma’am.” said Wish. We left the room. “Sure thing. Fix your face kid, the older students don’t take kindly to Strays.” called out Ms. Luceal. As we ascended the stairs to the third floor, Wish said, “Don’t let Ms. Luceal scare you. The Academy has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to bullying. Us prefects will enforce that policy, strictly. So if anyone tries to mess with you, you look for me.” We climbed two more flights of stairs. The second and third floor were identical to the first. On the fourth floor, opposite the floor-to-ceiling windows, were three doors. “These are the boys’ dormitories and the showers”, said Wish, “On the top floor are the girls’ dorms.” She opened the first door. “This is where all the boys bunk, but since you’re a first year you’ll be sleeping here.” The large room was divided into four by walls with a doorless entrances. Long rows of bunkbeds lined each side. On the bottom bunk of one of the beds to the left were two figures hunched over something that emitted a strong colorful light. The two didn’t even notice Wish and I approaching them until we arrived at the foot of the bed. “Use Sklerokenisis man!” “Chill bro, I got this.” The one playing what looked like a fantasy videogame, a lanky guy with thick curly hair and yellow skin immediately shut the laptop. “Really guys? What did I say about playing games after lunchtime.” “It’s already lesson time? Did you hear the bell?” Curly hair asked was a few shades lighter than me in complexion. He had a neat fade cut and a chin beard. “Hmm, can’t say I did.” “Aren’t you two in charge of ringing the bell this week?” asked Wish. “Oh yeah…” “Anyway, this is David.” “Sup man.” said curly hair. “Yo.” said chin beard. “Wassup.” “David, this is”, Wish pointed at curly hair, “Daniel. And that’s Dwayne. They’re also first years” “Finally, someone to add to the group.” said Daniel. “Why did it have to be another guy though…” “Show him around. I’ve got assignments I need to get to. I don’t want to catch you playing games during lesson time. The deal was you play in the morning and late at night. don’t make me confiscate it, you know you’re not supposed to have it anyway.” “Yes ma’am.” they said in unison. Wish left the dorms. I looked at my cracked phone screen. The battery was almost out and there was no signal whatsoever. “You’re lucky Wish brought you here. If it was another Prefect they would’ve taken that away." I changed into my uniform.

He walked over to the centre of the room. I followed, planting myself in front of the large man.He opened the lid of the box.Inside was a row of five chains with pendants resting in identically shaped depressions. The third chain was slightly higher in the row than the other four. This gave the whole thing an odd sense of balance. The Director removed one chain from the box and handed it to me. On its pendent were two interlinking circles.I put it on.“Now what I'm about to teach you is called weapon summoning.”I remembered Wallace and Jennifer summoning their weapons. I also remembered Franny summoning her staff.“Just like driving, it might be tricky to grasp at first. But, once you get to master it, it will become as natural as breathing.”The Director set the box down on his desk.“Relax your hands.”I let my arms hang.“Okay, now close your eyes. Take in a couple of deep breaths and relax. Clear your mind and remove every thought or recognition of your surroundings. Ball your

In Renchiology, we were to dissect an A class walker. On the silver tray before me was a slimy black blob with an uncountable number of finger-like legs. On top of it was a partially open bloodshot eyeball with a green and yellow iris. I poked at it with the blunt end of the small knife. Its legs twitched and flexed in a sickening motion. Daniel was right, this was pretty gross. Yet, morbidly cool at the same time. It looked like something out of an Edward Lee novel.“Now, let’s turn over our specimens,” said Mr Kajulu. He was a small man with square-shaped specs. I was probably because it was still the first lesson but he didn't seem quite as bad as Daniel made him sound. I liked him so far because he didn't seem to notice my presence which was a good thing. Before I could slice open the jaundiced-coloured underbelly of the Renchi, a knock came at the door. It was a tall boy with long brunette hair. He was, and I say this in the most heterosexual way, quite attractive. He kinda loo

Wallace went on the offense with a battle cry and an aggressive horizontal swing. Jennifer timed the attack perfectly. Before the chains could touch her, Jennifer cartwheeled to the right and landed in a crouching position. She sent a horizontal attack of her own. However, unlike Wallace, she was aiming for his legs. The chain in her right-hand grazed Wallace's ankle. But before a full collision, he leapt into the air, letting her chains slice past. Jennifer, however, displayed amazing control of her weapons by pulling on the chain in her left hand, forcing it to snap back. This time Wallace was too slow, the chain wrapped around his left calf and locked onto itself. Before she could knock him off his legs, Wallace coiled his chains around his fists and attacked the chain around his leg. Jennifer's chain was separated into two pieces, one long and one short. The piece that was around Wallace's leg exploded into a cloud of black-orange smoke. Jennifer was knocked off balance, stumbli

The last sounds of the bell fished me out of sleep. When I woke up, I thought it was still early morning. The sun wasn't penetrating my window like it usually did… Till it all came back to me like a wave crashing into the walls of my consciousness. The window wasn't there because this wasn't my room, and the bed I was sleeping in was not mine. “Rise and shine bro.” Daniel's face was looming over me. His white pajamas were dotted with the face of a yellow-haired anime character with a blue and silver headband and whiskers. I had settled for the bunk beneath Daniel's. Dwayne slept on the top part of the bunk opposite ours. The dorm slowly came to life as the other students woke up and crawled out of their beds. As we shuffled along the corridor on our way to the showers, I looked outside. The grounds were still gloomily illuminated by the weak star light from above. I wondered how they kept track of days at the Academy. The water was hot, comfortably so. It was a pleasant exper

That night I had another dream. This time I'm in a forest. The early morning sunlight pierces the trees in shafts and casts amorphous shapes on the wild earth. The steady chirps and tweets of birds fills the otherwise silent area. The air is steady, crisp, and warm on my skin. I take a careful step and crouch behind a tree. My eyes are glued to a young buck grazing on an oasis of green grass. Its lack of urgency shows that it's oblivious to my presence. My breathing is steady, but my palms are sweaty. I'm annoyed by the crunch of dried leaves as I shift my weight to get a better look at the target. I reach for the bow on my back. As I reach for the arrow hanging from a string on my waist, I catch something in my peripheral vision. At first, I think it's a King cobra, judging by the length of its body and the shape of the serpent's head. But the colours on its body are...mysterious. Predominantly glossy black with intricate white swirls and zig-zags along its top and sides. I

Director Frost and Amero looked at each other,“Did you fill him in?” asked the Director.“Yeap.”The Director returned his focus on me.“This must be very hard to digest.”I laughed, but I didn’t feel joy.“This isn’t real. It’s finally happened. The pain and the loneliness has finally pushed me to the edge. Haha, I knew it was going to happen sooner or later…”The Director walked over to me and placed his large hands on my shoulder.“Do you feel that? I’m real. Deputy Amero is real. All this is real. You haven’t lost your mind.”Amero sighed as he tossed a cigarette into his mouth.“Strays man.”“I know this is hard David. What I just told you is probably making you question everything you believe. It’s probably making you question reality itself. But I need you to trust me, okay?”“Why do you keep on calling me a Stray?”“That’s a term we use here for individuals with the Blessing but who don’t know it.”“Blessing?”“The fact that you could see Amero and his team means that you can

Fear gave way to a lack of comprehension. A medieval castle made from obsidian stone loomed menacingly at the center of a large transparent dome that had material similar to that of the bridge. Within the confines of the castle were five large bronze statues, each raising a finger to the sky.Next to the Castle was a triple-story brick-faced building. To the extreme left was a long and wide structure that looked like a hall. In the foggy distance behind the castle, was another large multi-story building. A fair distance to the right of that was a thick orchard. Just above the various types of fruit trees was steel-webbed dome with milky white glass. On the other side of the glassy dome was infinite space, just like at the bridge. The earth seemed haunted with spaced trees of varying sizes. The grass that flanked the cobblestone path that led to the castle was moldy green. The chilly air sent goosebumps up my exposed arms. Beneath my feet was a thick gray circular platform with an engr

"Wait, can he see us right now?" asked the short man.The woman outstretched her hand. Black- orange smoke bubbled out from her palm. A long obsidian staff materialized within her grasp. She poked my side.“Oh wow, I think he can.” said Amero.“You know what that means. Stray alert!” proclaimed blue eyes.“What's your name kid?” asked Amero.“My, my name?”“Uh yeah, your name, what? don't you have one?”“I do.”“Well then, what is it?”“David, David Pakati.”“Hey, if he's a stray maybe he saw the Renchi.” Said green eyes.“Nah I doubt it. If he saw a Renchi he'd crying in a pool of his own piss right now.” Said the woman.“Well kid? You see anything...unusual around here?” asked Amero.“I Uhm…”I looked behind me, the woman was nowhere in sight, neither was her car.“What are you looking at? Did you see something?”“I think so, but uhm, who are you?”“Don't worry about it, kid.” said blue eyes.“I'm sorry, but I can't keep talking to a weird stranger who refuses to tell me their name
