THE SECOND ATTACK

The night was quiet.

Elias lay on the narrow bed in the safehouse, staring at the ceiling. Sleep would not come. The events of the day replayed in his mind—the Null Knight, the sphere of absence, the wheel he had pulled back from nothing. His hand still tingled. The void was there, waiting, always waiting.

The clockwork flower sat on the nightstand, pulsing faintly.

He closed his eyes.

And felt it.

Danger Sense flared. Not a scream. Not yet. A whisper. A pressure at the base of his skull.

  • THE HUNT

The Hound did not move. It stood over Mara's bed, its void eyes fixed on Elias, its form flickering with hunger. It was waiting. Not for him to attack. For him to make a mistake. Elias did not give it the chance. He reached. Not for the threads. Not for the void. He reached for the Hound's existence, for the thin, frayed threads that held it in being. He grabbed them and pulled. The Hound yelped. Its form flickered, stretched, pulled away from Mara. It tumbled off the bed, dissolving into light before it hit the ground. "Elias!" Mara screamed. "I'm here!" He grabbed her arm and pulled her off the bed. "We need to move. Now." More shapes appeared in the doorway. Two more Hounds. Then a third. Their void eyes fixed on Mara. On the echo. On the anchor. "Downstairs!" Elias shouted. "Go!" They ran. --- The house was chaos. Adrian was already in the living room, his ring blazing. He punched through a Hound that lunged at Lyra, then spun and kicked another that came from the si

The clockwork flower sat on the nightstand, pulsing faintly. He closed his eyes. And felt it. Danger Sense flared. Not a scream. Not yet. A whisper. A pressure at the base of his skull. He sat up, his heart already pounding. Something was wrong. He reached for Thread Sense. The ability spread outward, reading the threads of the city. They were agitated. Twisting. Something was moving through them. Something that did not belong. He reached for Presence Detection. The ability flared. There. Not one. Several. Moving through Ashwick. Not toward the safehouse. Toward something else. Toward his house. He could feel them across the city. Not just here. Not just at his house. T

  • THE AFTERMATH

The street was quiet. Elias sat on the curb, his hands still shaking. The restored wheel sat a few feet away, solid and real, a fragment of existence pulled back from nothing. The wounds in the street remained—sections of road and sidewalk that simply were not there anymore. The Null Knight was gone, banished by Seraphine's chains of light. Adrian was the first to break the silence. "What the hell was that?" He was standing near the edge of the damage, his ring still glowing faintly. His limp was worse now. The fight had taken more out of him than he wanted to admit. Seraphine sheathed her blade. "That was a Null Knight. A scout, most likely. The Null Order sends them ahead of larger forces to test defenses." "A scout?" Adrian's voice was incredulous. "That thing almost killed us." "It would have, if Elias had not restored that fragment." Seraphine looked at him. "That was unexpected. Even for me." Elias did not answer. He was staring at the wheel. He had done that. He had re

  • SERAPHINE'S INTERVENTION

The sphere grew. Elias reached for the wounds again. But his hand was shaking. His body was exhausted. The restoration had taken something out of him, something he could not name. He did not know if he could do it again. The sphere expanded. Another streetlamp vanished. Another section of road. The world was disappearing, piece by piece, and he could not stop it. And then Seraphine arrived. --- She came from the shadows without a sound. One moment the street was empty. The next, she stood between Elias and the Knight, her silver blade drawn, her coat billowing in a wind that did not exist. Her pale eyes were cold. Her expression was calm. "Get back," she said. Elias did not argue. He grabbed Lyra's arm and pulled her away. Adrian followed, limping but moving. Mara remained hidden at the edge of the district, watching. The Knight turned toward Seraphine. Its blank face shifted. "The reader," it said. "You are far from your books." Seraphine did not answer. She raised her bl

  • THE NULL KNIGHT'S PURPOSE

The sphere expanded. It did not rush. It did not roar. It simply grew, the way a shadow grows when the sun sets, the way water rises when the tide comes in. Inevitable. Patient. Hungry. Elias watched it happen. The parked car went first. A silver sedan, old, rusted at the wheel wells. It flickered once, twice, and then was gone. Not destroyed. Not shattered. Gone. No debris. No ash. No memory of metal or glass or rubber. Just a clean absence where the car had been, as if the world had forgotten it had ever existed. The streetlamp beside it disappeared a moment later. Then a mailbox. Then a fire hydrant. Then a section of the road itself, ten feet wide, twenty feet long, simply ceased to exist. The edges of the hole were not ragged. They were smooth. Perfect. Wrong. Elias could see the wounds. Not with his eyes. With something deeper. Something that had been growing inside him since the moment he touched the void in the Hollow District. The wounds were not physical. They were exi

  • THE BATTLE IN THE STREETS

The Knight was gone, but the fight was not over. Elias felt it before he saw it. Thread Sense flared, and the district unfolded in his mind. The threads were moving. Being pulled. Something was coming. "More," he said. Seraphine was already moving. "The Null Order doesn't send one Knight. They send waves." "Waves of what?" Adrian asked. The answer came a moment later. A Null Knight stepped out of the shadows. Not the same one. Different. Taller. Its form was more solid, more present. But its threads were the same. Shattered. Broken. Existing between existence and nonexistence. "Boundary Child," it said. "The King sends his regards." Elias did not wait. He ran. --- The fight spilled into the streets. Elias dodged the Knight's attacks. Temporal Stutter flared. Temporal Deceleration slowed his perception. He moved early, always early, avoiding claws that would have torn him apart. But he could not fight back. He reached for the threads. They passed through the Knight. He
