A bullet does not wait for questions.

The moment Zara’s voice echoes through the dark loading bay, a heavy round shatters the concrete floor inches from my boots. Sparks fly into the air, bright and sharp. I yank Ifeoma behind the heavy metal frame of an armored transport truck just as a second shot rings out from the upper catwalks.

"He is playing with us," Ifeoma says, her breathing fast and shallow. She presses her back against the cool metal door of the truck, her eyes scanning the shadows above. "Zara does not want to kill us right away. He wants to see how long we can run before the trap closes."

I look down at my hands. The black fire is still pulsing under my skin, warm and heavy, ready to burst out at my command. I am tired of running. For eighteen years, I thought I was a nobody hiding in the slums. Then I found out my entire life was a fake simulation built to keep me caged. Now that I am out in the real world, I refuse to spend another second dodging bullets from people who think they own my fate.

"He is not going to get the chance to close the trap," I tell her, my voice hard.

Before Ifeoma can stop me, I step out from behind the truck.

Up on the metal catwalk near the ceiling, Zara stands alone in the dim red emergency light. He wears his white lab coat like a trophy, his blond hair neat and untouched by the chaos below. He holds a heavy-caliber rifle in one hand, resting it casually against his shoulder as he looks down at me with a lazy, arrogant smile.

"Brave little test subject," Zara calls out, his voice carrying clearly across the huge room. "You broke out of the primary simulation. Congratulations. Do you really think that means you are free?"

"You built a fake world to steal my life," I reply, my voice rising over the hum of the loading bay generators. "That ends today, Zara."

Zara laughs. It is a smooth, mocking sound that makes my blood boil. He raises his free hand and snaps his fingers twice.

Heavy steel shutters on the far side of the loading bay begin to grind open. Bright, blinding white light floods into the room from the outside streets of the real Neo-Chicago. But as my eyes adjust to the glare, the breath catches in my throat.

Rows of armed pack enforcers stand outside in the street, blocking every possible exit. And right at the front of the crowd, standing with a calm, dangerous posture, is Uncle Kanmi.

Kanmi rests both hands on top of a polished silver cane, watching me with cold, unblinking eyes. He does not look like a frightened man or a broken relative. He looks like a king who is about to take back what belongs to him by force.

"You still do not understand how this city works, Simeon," Kanmi says, his deep voice carrying easily into the garage. "Your parents thought they could share the master key with the lower districts. They had to be removed. And you were kept alive only because the core code needed a blood heir to unlock the final firewall."

My fists clench so hard my fingernails dig into my palms. "You murdered them."

"We secured the future," Kanmi corrects, stepping forward into the doorway. "And now, you are going to finish the job. You will step up to the central terminal in the main district tower, enter the final sequence, and give us total control over both the real city and the simulation."

"And if I say no?" I ask, taking a slow step toward the open exit.

Kanmi’s smile fades, replaced by a look of absolute cruelty. "Then we kill the girl, wipe your memory core back to zero, and start the simulation over tomorrow. You can live out your fake life in the alley as many times as it takes for you to learn obedience."

Inside the truck, I hear Ifeoma shift sharply. She does not wait for my permission.

Before Kanmi can blink, Ifeoma leans out from behind the truck door, holding a heavy tactical flare gun she pulled from the vehicle's emergency kit. She aims straight up toward the control box of the overhead bay doors and pulls the trigger.

A bright red flare shoots across the room with a deafening whistle, slamming directly into the electronic control panel.

Sparks explode in a shower of white fire. The heavy steel shutters above us lose power instantly, groaning loudly as they begin to slam down toward the floor under their own weight.

"Go!" Ifeoma yells, grabbing my arm and pulling me forward.

Zara curses from the catwalk, dropping his rifle and leaping down onto a lower platform to cut us off. Kanmi shouts an order to the enforcers outside, and a wall of rifle fire erupts toward the closing doors.

Bullets ping off the metal floor all around us as we sprint across the loading bay. We dive beneath the descending steel shutter just as it hits the concrete with a massive crash, cutting off the view of the street, the enforcers, and Kanmi.

We tumble out into a narrow, rain-slicked alleyway behind the facility. The cool night air of Neo-Chicago hits my face, smelling of ozone, wet asphalt, and distant neon lights.

Ifeoma pulls me behind a large brick pillar, her chest heaving as she catches her breath. "That bought us thirty seconds before they cut through the shutter with a plasma cutter."

I look down the dark, narrow street. The real Neo-Chicago stretches out around us, towering skyscrapers glowing with bright digital advertisements, flying transit cars zooming between buildings, and shadows hiding dangers far worse than anything in the simulation.

"They know every inch of this city," I say, wiping rain from my forehead. "Where do we go?"

Ifeoma pulls a small digital map from her pocket, the screen glowing blue against her face. A sharp, confident smile returns to her lips, completely erasing any sign of fear.

"We go to the one place the ruling pack cannot touch," she says, tapping the screen. "The underground resistance network in the lower slums."

Before I can answer, a deafening explosion echoes behind us.

The heavy steel shutter of the loading bay blows outward in a cloud of twisted metal and orange fire. Through the smoke, Zara steps out into the rain, his lab coat torn and his eyes locked directly onto us.

"Run all you want, Simeon," Zara calls out, raising his hand as a dozen armed enforcers pour out behind him. "You cannot hide from the system."
