Arcadia Academy – Duel Grounds, Noon

The sun beat down hard, hot and heavy, like it was watching.

A crowd was already gathering, voices low and full of tension.

Kai pulled at the sleeve of his training tunic and stepped into the ring.

Across from him stood Cyrus—Class A’s star student, his hair tied neatly, his green eyes sharp and steady.

Just before Kai could move away, Lina grabbed his arm.

“You don’t have to do this,” she said softly.

He looked at her. Calm and quiet. “He called me out”…“It’s a trap.”

He smirked faintly. “I know.”

Earlier that Morning – Class E Hall

Cyrus had arrived unannounced. Calm, elegant, and deeply unsettling.

“Trial matches are open this week,” he’d said, voice smooth as silk over a knife’s edge. “I’m requesting a public duel. With Kai.”

The room fell into stunned silence.

“You sure you want that?” someone muttered.

Cyrus tilted his head. “Absolutely.”

Kai had stood slowly. “What’s your angle?”

Cyrus smiled. “You’ll find out.”

Back to the Duel Grounds

The judge—a sour-faced enchanter named Durn raised his hand.

“Standard rules. No killing. No curses. First to fall or forfeit. Begin on my mark.”

Cyrus stretched his arms, loose and lazy.

“You’re trembling,” he said.

“I’m focused,” Kai replied.

Durn’s hand dropped. “Begin!”

Cyrus was on him instantly—no warm-up, no hesitation.

A blast of red fire screamed across the arena.

Kai rolled aside, feeling the heat skim his back.

“You’re slow,” Cyrus called, launching another barrage.

Kai blocked it with a crude barrier—barely in time.

The crowd gasped.

Lina clutched the rail. “He’s holding back.”

Mae, beside her, frowned. “Cyrus?”

“No—Kai.”

Kai gritted his teeth………The grimoire’s memory danced in his head—Spell #27: Flame Shear Counter—a half-forgotten move from Rafe’s old logs.

But if he used it…

Another flare came at him, bright and fast.

He muttered under his breath, “To hell with it”.

As the fireball hit, Kai twisted into a low stance, angled his palm, and deflected the blow—not with force, but redirection. Flame bent sideways, slicing the earth in a sharp arc.

The crowd gasped.

Cyrus blinked.

“That move…”

A murmur rippled through the stands.

“That was—”

“Rafe’s technique.”

Cyrus’s smile dropped. “You remember that?”

Kai’s breath came heavy. “No. But my body does.”

Cyrus stepped back. “So it’s true.”

“What is?”

“You’re waking up.”

Edge of the Arena

Professor Voren leaned toward Halden. “Did you see that?”

Halden nodded slowly. “He didn’t just remember. He modified it.”

Voren’s eyes narrowed. “Then we’ve passed the tipping point.”

Back in the ring, Kai felt the weight of the world pressing down.He was on the edge of collapse.

Cyrus stood tall, breathing steady, but his hands weren’t glowing anymore.

“You’ve improved,” he said. “I didn’t expect that.”

Kai coughed. “You’re welcome.”

“But you’re not him. Not yet.”

“I’m not trying to be.”

Cyrus’s eyes darkened. “That’s the problem.”

He lunged.

Kai braced—but Cyrus stopped just short of contact.

Instead, he whispered, “You don’t remember me, do you?”

Kai froze. “What?”

“Your greatest regret wore my face.”

Then Cyrus raised his hand.

“I forfeit.”Gasps echoed.

“What the hell?” someone shouted.

The judge frowned. “Match is over. Winner by forfeit:

Kai of Class E.”

Later – Near the Training Hall

Kai was sitting on a bench, wiping blood from a cut on his shoulder.

Cyrus appeared beside him like a ghost.

“You didn’t win,” Cyrus said.

Kai didn’t look up. “I didn’t need to.”

“You still don’t remember?”

Kai shook his head.

Cyrus sighed. “Maybe that’s mercy.”

Kai turned. “Why challenge me? Why put on a show?”

“Because you needed the push. You’ve been walking around afraid of yourself. That won’t work anymore.”

Kai stood. “Why do you care?”

Cyrus gave him a long, unreadable look. “Because last time… I followed you.”“And?”……“I want to see if I was wrong.”

Then he walked away, leaving Kai staring after him

Dormitory Rooftop – Night

Lina joined Kai without a word, sitting beside him under the stars.

“So…” she said.

He nodded. “Yeah.”

“You copied the Tyrant’s move.”

He winced. “It wasn’t on purpose.”

“Doesn’t matter. Everyone saw it.”

He looked at his hands. “Maybe I’m just a reflection of him.”

“You’re not.”…..“I used his spell.”

“But you didn’t break the rules. You didn’t lose control. You didn’t burn the arena to ash. You just… stood your ground.”

Kai closed his eyes. “Why does it still feel wrong?”

Lina shrugged. “Because you’re trying to be good.”

He looked at her. “Do you think I was evil?”

“I think… you were powerful. And alone. That’s dangerous.”

“And now?”

She smiled. “Now you have me.”

Three Days Later – Arcadia Academy, East WingKai could feel it.Not just the stares anymore. Something more precise. More practiced.Eyes followed him wherever he went. Not openly—but just long enough. Just subtle enough. He’d catch the flick of a head turning when he entered a hall. The sound of footsteps that always stopped when he stopped. The breath behind him when he walked alone. The Circle was watching. And they weren’t being careful anymore. At first, he thought it was paranoia. The aftereffects of the memory vision. But by the second day, he was sure. On the third, he started testing it.A quick turn in the courtyard. A pause mid-staircase. Every time, someone vanished just out of view. They were following him.Or—someone was.———- Potions LabProfessor Lin spoke in long, droning tones about “the delicate balance of alchemical threads,” but Kai barely heard her. He pretended to copy notes, his gaze fixed on the back of the room—where a girl from Class C sat two rows behind.

Kai’s Dorm RoomThe wax seal cracked under Kai’s fingers—he hadn’t meant to break it that fast, but his hands wouldn’t stop shaking. The parchment unfolded with a dry hiss. No greeting. No message. Just a symbol.Black ink, jagged and deliberate. There was something else mixed in—silver? No. Something metallic that caught the light in a way that didn’t sit right. It throbbed softly, like it had a pulse of its own.Kai’s brow creased. This wasn’t a design. It was a sigil.Underneath, scratched in faded ink:“The grimoire remembers more than you do.”His throat went dry. The letter slipped from his grip and fluttered to the desk, landing beside the old grimoire—the grimoire. The one he should’ve locked away. The one that still made sounds at night, like whispering when everything else was silent. The instant the edge of the parchment brushed the grimoire’s worn leather—the sigil lit up.It hissed. Then it hummed.Heat surged through the room, sudden and sharp. Kai stumbled back from his

But they were.“That was Tyrant magic.”“He redirected flame—like he’s done it a thousand times.”“Is he… reincarnated?”He moved through the crowd like he was walking upstream. Shoulders square. Face unreadable. But inside, his thoughts were loud. They’d seen too much. And worse… so had he.He hadn’t meant to use Rafe’s move. It had slipped from his body like instinct. A twitch. A reflex. And yet it fit him like it belonged. That scared him more than anything. At their usual table, Lina sat with Mae and Alen, watching Kai’s slow approach. Something in her had changed since last night. She didn’t know what, only that it was heavier than before.“Kai,” she said softly as he sat beside her.He didn’t answer.Mae looked around. “People are treatin

Silent.Until she wasn’t.“You’ve been quiet since the duel,” she said softly.Kai didn’t answer right away.“I keep hearing the crowd,” he muttered. “The way they said his name. Rafe. Like I summoned a ghost.”“You didn’t,” Lina said.“Didn’t I?” He held up his hand. It was steady. That almost scared him more. “I used his spell, Lina. On instinct. No hesitation.”“You didn’t burn the arena down as I said earlier ,” she reminded him. “You didn’t lose control.”He gave a hollow laugh. “What if that was just luck?”She turned to him, her voice firmer. “Then next time, you’ll make sure it’s not.”His gaze flicked to hers.“You really believe that?”“I have to.”

Arcadia Academy, Outer Field – Just before dawnThe grass was wet underfoot. Cold air clung to Kai’s skin like mist, but he didn’t care.Lina sat on a flat stone nearby, hugging her knees and watching him fumble through hand signs.“Left, twist, then release,” she said gently.Kai blew out a breath. “Easy for you to say. My fingers don’t bend like that.”“Because you’re overthinking it. Magic isn’t just about shape—it’s intent.” She tapped her chest. “Here. Not here.” Then her head.He scowled. “Intent didn’t help when I nearly lit my sleeve on fire.”“You’ll get it. Try again.”He inhaled, slow. Closed his eyes. Focused on the spell from Rafe’s grimoire—the least volatile one he could find. Just a basic binding thread. Nothing fancy. Nothing dark. The air shimmered faintly between his fingers. The thread formed—wobbly, thin, but real.Lina grinned. “Yes! You did it!”Kai blinked. “That… that wasn’t supposed to work.”She stood. “I told you. It’s not about being Rafe. It’s about being
