Secrets Behind the Bedroom Door

The Baskoro mansion felt like a marble-lined coffin. Cold, silent, and suffocating. After a series of exhausting performances in front of business colleagues, Sony was finally ushered into the master bedroom, which was large enough to swallow his entire subsidized apartment.

The teak door closed with a final click. Aruna immediately kicked off her high heels, tossing them carelessly until they hit the wall. The mask of the graceful woman she had worn all day dissolved instantly, replaced by the expression of a weary predator.

"Listen, servant," Aruna walked toward the vanity, reaching for a glass of ice water without even looking back. "The rules of engagement in this room are simple. You sleep on the sofa. Don’t ever touch me, don’t ever speak unless I ask, and don’t ever expect some romantic 'wedding night' here."

Sony stood frozen near the door. His eyes swept across the room. Luxurious, yet it felt like a prison. He remembered Aruna’s threat about the man at the hotel. A chill still crawled down his spine, but his technician’s instincts slowly took over. He was a man used to fixing broken systems, and right now, he was inside Aruna’s "system," which was full of holes.

"Why are you so tense?" Sony walked slowly toward the sofa, his voice sounding calmer than he felt. "Are you afraid I’ll do something to that baby of yours?"

Aruna froze. She set her glass down with a sharp clink. She turned around, staring at Sony with narrowed, piercing eyes. "Don’t you dare bring up that baby, Sony. That is none of your business."

"That’s exactly my business now," Sony said, sitting on the edge of the sofa and unbuttoning his shirt cuffs with a slow, provocative motion. "I’ve signed the contract. I am your legal husband in the eyes of the law. If a doctor examines you later and finds no fetus there, or if you’re lying about this pregnancy, it won’t just be you who’s destroyed. It’ll be your father, too."

Aruna laughed a short, humorless sound. She stepped toward Sony, her sharp scent filling his senses. Aruna leaned down, her face only inches from his.

"Playing detective, are we?" Aruna whispered. "Do you think I’m that stupid? Every doctor who examines my pregnancy is one of my father’s confidants. I can manipulate ultrasound results, blood tests, even a fetal heartbeat in seconds. You’re just a lowly technician lucky enough to catch the scent of Baskoro’s money. Don't act so smart."

Sony remained silent, staring at the woman’s elegant neck. Suddenly, he remembered something. When Aruna had stepped out of the car earlier, she had tripped slightly. She hadn't reached for her stomach at all; there was no protective maternal gesture something women usually do subconsciously, even if they’re just pretending.

"You were drinking wine earlier," Sony remarked suddenly.

"What?"

"At the small reception. I saw you drink wine twice. Crystal glass, deep red contents." Sony stood up, now dominating Aruna's personal space. "A woman in her first trimester, especially a perfectionist like you who wants this scandal to go smoothly, wouldn't dare touch alcohol. That would endanger the 'asset' you’re carrying, wouldn't it?"

Aruna flinched. Her eyes widened, but she quickly regained her composure. She took a step back, her breath hitching. "It was fruit juice, you idiot. Don't pretend to know anything about the lifestyle of the rich."

"It was wine. Pinot Noir," Sony said, stepping forward and cornering Aruna against the edge of the bed. "I’m a technician, Aruna. I’m used to paying attention to the smallest details because one wrong bolt can ruin an entire mechanical system. And my observations are never wrong."

Aruna fell silent. She stood frozen, staring at Sony with an unreadable expression. There was a flash of fear caught in her eyes, though it was quickly masked by deep resentment.

"Getting bold, are we?" Aruna reached for a flower vase on the nearby table but hesitated. Instead, she leaned her face close again, her breath hot against Sony’s skin. "Do you really want to know the secret behind this room? Do you want to know why I need a husband like you?"

"Tell me," Sony replied coldly.

Aruna took a long breath. She grabbed Sony’s hand and led him—not toward an embrace, but toward a large, tightly locked wardrobe in the corner of the room. She pulled a small key from behind her necklace.

"Behind this door," Aruna whispered, her voice now trembling strangely between anger and despair. "It’s not expensive clothes. It’s not jewelry. It is something far more valuable than both our lives."

Aruna inserted the key into the lock. Click.

"If you see what’s inside here, Sony Anggara, you won’t have a choice anymore. You’ll be tied to me forever, or you’ll end up like that man at the hotel."

The wardrobe door creaked open, revealing a dim light emanating from within. Sony felt as if his heart had stopped beating. He didn't see piles of cash or secret corporate documents.

Inside, there was a monitor screen connected directly to Baskoro’s study, and on the screen, a video recording was playing in real-time.

Sony froze. On the screen, he saw Baskoro sitting in a dark room, speaking to someone on the phone. Baskoro was holding a pistol, and in front of him lay a file with photos of Sony and his mother, marked with a large red X.

"He knows you're suspicious, Sony," Aruna whispered, tears streaming down her cheeks not out of sadness, but out of sheer panic. "Father never allows anyone to know about my charade. And now, he’s already ordered someone to eliminate you tonight."

Sony turned sharply toward the bedroom window overlooking the mansion’s back garden. There, among the shadows of the pine trees, he saw a small red laser moving slowly, searching for a focal point behind the window glass.

"Get down!" Sony shouted, lunging at Aruna and tackling her to the floor just as the sound of shattering glass thundered through the room.

The deafening explosion of shattering glass was ear-splitting. Crystal shards flew like jagged snow, raining down on the white marble floor now stained with dust. Sony held Aruna’s body tightly, rolling her behind the sturdy king-size bed. Their breath came in ragged gasps, joined in a suffocating panic."Dammit," Sony cursed under his breath. He glanced toward the window. The red laser dot was still dancing across the floor, as if hunting for the prey that had just vanished from sight. "Who are they? Did Baskoro really send people to kill his own son-in-law?"Aruna was shaking violently in Sony’s arms. Her usually haughty face was as pale as a sheet. "He’s... he’s insane. I only wanted to manipulate his position on the board of directors; I never thought he’d hire professionals to take me out along with you!"Sony didn't answer. His mind was racing. He was a technician; he knew how security systems worked. This mansion had to have

The crystal chandeliers in the ballroom seemed to shine directly into the pit of Sony's stomach. Ten minutes. That was all the time left before a specialist would take the stage and expose the most risky charade of his life.Aruna was still trembling on the balcony floor. Her expensive dress was rumpled, and she was gasping for air as if the oxygen in the room had been sucked out. Sony stared at the tightly closed glass doors. Behind them, hundreds of eyes from Jakarta’s elite were waiting for the "performance" Baskoro had prepared."Aruna, get up," Sony gripped the woman’s arm, pulling her up roughly. "We don’t have time for tears.""We’re finished, Sony," Aruna whispered, her eyes blankly staring at the glittering city lights. "The moment that doctor puts an ultrasound on my stomach, it's over. My father won't let us leave this building alive."Sony didn't answer. He glanced at his expensive watcha borrowed piece from Baskoro's personal collection. Eight minutes left. He racked his

  • Moments of Deceit

The night in the five-star hotel ballroom felt suffocating. The crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling seemed like interrogation spotlights aimed directly at Sony. Beside him, Aruna stood in a navy silk evening gown that shimmered with every movement, projecting an air of elegance capable of deceiving anyone who saw her."Remember," Aruna whispered, her voice so low it was barely audible beneath the thrum of the smooth orchestral music. "Keep your hands from going cold. If you tremble while shaking my father’s colleagues' hands, I’ll make sure you never see your mother again."Sony took a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart. He was wearing a tuxedo that fit him perfectly, a gift from Baskoro designed to make the technician look like the son-in-law of a conglomerate family. In front of them, Baskoro stood with a glass of wine in hand, smiling broadly at a middle-aged man in an expensive suit who appeared very powerful. It was Mr. Gunawan, the owner of the largest propert

  • The Other Side of Aruna

Aruna didn't speed off immediately. She let the engine roar in the silence of the industrial alley that smelled of waste. Her eyes weren't on Sony; instead, she watched the rearview mirror, tracking the headlights of the black fleet slowly blocking their exit. Aruna's hand still gripped the pistol tightly, her knuckles white."Why did you help me?" Sony repeated his question, still breathless from the fight.Aruna let out a cynical laugh, a sound that felt foreign to Sony’s ears. "Don't get the wrong idea, servant. I didn't help you because I care. I helped you because you're an asset whose expiration date hasn't arrived yet. If you die now, who's going to shoulder the weight of this scandal in front of the media next week?"Sony studied Aruna's profile, illuminated by the flickering streetlights. She looked incredibly calm, even as the screech of Baskoro's tires began to echo against the asphalt behind them."You're absolutely insane," Sony muttered."And you're just realizing that?"

  • A Life on the Line

The atmosphere at the Baskoro residence felt even more suffocating after the incident at the hospital. Aruna sat on the living room sofa, sipping a glass of water with hands that were still trembling. Sony stood near the window, observing the grounds outside, which now looked even more sterilized than usual double security."Don't think you're safe just because someone forged those test results," Aruna broke the silence, her voice sharp yet hoarse. "My father isn't that stupid. He's waiting for us to make the slightest mistake so he has an excuse to get rid of us."Sony didn't turn around. "I didn't forge that data, Aruna. And I'm certain you didn't either. There's a third party here. Someone who has access to the Baskoro Group's hospital system."Suddenly, the ringing of Aruna's phone shattered the tension. The phone screen lit up, displaying an unidentified number. Aruna answered it with hesitation, then her face changed drastically, turning as white as a sheet. She immediately hand

The black sedan cut through the darkness of the night, speeding away from Baskoro’s mansion, which was now swarming with sirens. Sony drove with hands that were still shaking violently. Beside him, Aruna sat huddled, staring blankly out the window. Her expensive silk gown was torn at the shoulder, soiled by the dust of the ruined vault."Medika Hospital," Sony muttered, breaking the suffocating silence. "It’s the only safe place right now. Baskoro won’t dare cause a scene there because there are so many reporters on standby waiting for news on your mother’s condition."Aruna turned, her eyes red from leftover tears. "You think he cares? My father is a sociopath. He’s probably already written the script to eliminate us and put out a story that we died in a tragic accident while trying to flee."Sony didn’t answer. He pressed harder on the gas. However, his thoughts were interrupted when Aruna suddenly touched his arm with her icy fingers."Sony, stop," Aruna whispered. Her voice was no
