Kain didn't move.

The crossbow bolt was fired right into his heart. Joren's hands were trembling so furiously that it shook while he was holding it.

Kain kept his voice down, "Joren. Put away the gun.

I can't," replied Joren, sobbing. Veyr has my mother, he said, if I didn't bring you to him, he will hang her from the city walls.

Orin sat at a table, his face hidden. The boy is telling the truth, Kain, Veyr took his mother the night we opened the gates, he's using her as leverage.

The courtyard fell silent."Ryna."She did not meet Kain's eyes. Instead, she looked where Malakor had been lying. The guards had dragged Malakor away but the blood still stained the sand."You had a system." Her voice was flat. "The whole time.""Yes.""In the mud. When we were starving in the cave. When we were building the camp.""Yes."Ryna finally looked up at Kain. Her eyes held a steely gaze. "How many times did I think we were going to die? How many nights did I lay awake trying to work out how we were going to feed twenty people with no food or money? Yet you had a magical system?"Kain took a step forward. "The System gives me a list of things to do, warnings. But I had to actually do the work. I had to be the leader. I had to bleed.""You should have told me." She said."I didn't trust anyone. Not even myself. The System is dangerous and was infected with the spirit of the Old Conqueror. He was trying to take control of my mind. Had I told you and he took over he would have

There was a black plain that extended far away.Kain held his steel sword aloft. He was surrounded by the Old Conqueror, who cursed him with his black fire sword crackling in the lifeless air.The conqueror replied, "You cannot win! Now you're just a thought in your head, I'm the one in charge.Kain didn't answer. He was looking at the conqueror's feet. He recalled Ryna's words. Don't be in a hurry to open. The conqueror lunged. Its strike jarred Kain's arms and he parried. The black fire blazed over his steel. He clenched his jaws and strained back, shoving away the spirit. You use anger," Kain said. There's fear you use but you're sloppy. The victorious one snarled and attacked once again. He hit him high, then low, and then slammed his shoulder into Kain's chest. Kain was flying backwards and landed on the grey dirt.A voice whispered, "Get up.A voice whispered: "Get up. The conqueror was not so. It was a warm voice indeed. There was a full house in the courtyard. The balconies and the outskirts of the stone square were full of lords, guards and commoners. The sun was shining overhead and casting strong shadows on the sand.Kain was standing on one side of the circle. He was equipped with plain leather armour. No helmet. No shield. Just his sword.Malakor was on the other side. The chains had been removed. He carried a longsword and buckler shield.Well, you did it," Malakor said, stretching his neck. I thought you'd be hiding behind your new crown," I replied.I'm not hiding," said Kain. "I'm ending this."Then the High Septon came in the middle of the circle. May this be a trial to be decided under the eyes of the gods; may the innocent be victorious. He stepped back.Malakor lunged immediately. He was quick, just as he was before. Kain awoke in the royal-bed chamber. He was lost for a time, not knowing where he was. The height of the ceiling was too great. Bed was too soft. The silk sheets were like chains. He was sitting up, his hand reaching for a sword which was not there. This was not his armor, he was wearing a fine linen tunic. He felt exposed. There was a soft knock at the door.Kain replied, "Come in.Ryna stepped inside. She was wearing clean clothes, but she still carried her bow. She looked him in the eye, her eyes going over his face. You look awful," she replied.“God Damn, I feel bad” Kain responded. He went to the window and gazed out at the capital. The city was getting up. Stalls were being set up by vendors. The children were playing in the streets. It looked peaceful. However, Kain knew that this was a lie. Malakor was in the dungeons. The lords of the south were yet not at ease. And in his head was the Old Conqueror. The voice whispered, "You look like a king. But you still feel like a soldi

No one dared to get involved.Malakor spun his sword. "You’re an idiot Kain. You didn’t even use any magic, or strategy. You’re just a man with a pointy bit of metal.""I’ve always been just a man. The strategy was just a tool. I’m the weapon."Malakor laughed. He charged.Kain barely got his sword up in time. There was a loud clang as their swords met. Malakor was quick. Faster than Veyr. Faster than anyone Kain had fought without the System.Malakor pushed Kain back. He swung his sword high, low and then jabbed forward. Kain blocked, ducked and backed away. Kain’s arms were burning."Where is your dark magic? Where is your golden light?"Kain didn’t reply. He was saving his breath. He watched Malakor’s feet, his shoulders. • Chapter 51 :EMPTY MIND

It took five days to reach the capital.Kain sat quietly. He didn't speak to Ryna, or Vane, or Joren. He simply looked straight ahead at the road ahead and was a blank slate. It was strange. The System had been with him for months. A light blue panel in the corner of his eyes. A voice to provide quests, warnings and skills. There was nothing now. Just the wind. The stirrup of his saddle. His own breathing. It was like losing an arm or a leg. He continued to press the System, hoping that the map marker would appear, or that a warning prompt would pop up, and nothing ever did.On the third night they camped near a small river. Kain was sitting by the fire, sharpening his sword. He wasn't using a skill. He was only doing it with his hands, rubbing it on the steel.Ryna sat down next to him. She didn't say anything for a long time. Finally she said, "You haven't been talking much. Finally she said, "You've been quiet.Kain said, "There's nothing to say."You lost the System."Kain's hand c
