The People Come

Sir Leon and his fifty knights walked back to the capital with no shoes. Their feet were bleeding. They had no armor. They had no swords. They had no horses. They walked for three days and three nights under sun and rain. People on the road saw them and laughed. They said look royal knights walking like beggars. Who did this to them.

When they reached the capital gate the guards did not even recognize them. Leon had to shout I am Sir Leon captain of Prince Darius guard.

The guards let them in with shame. They went straight to Darius palace.

Darius was in his room breaking things when he saw them. He had heard rumors already that his knights were defeated but he did not believe it until he saw Leon with no shoes and burned mages behind him.

He shouted Leon what happened. Where are my horses. Where are my swords.

Leon knelt with head down. He could not look at Darius. He said my prince we lost. The disgraced prince Kael is not f rank. He has strange power. He stopped our fireballs in air and made them hit us. He made all fifty of us kneel with one word. He took our weapons and said Ashenfall is now a kingdom.

Darius face became white then red. He picked a golden cup and threw it at Leon head. Leon did not dodge. Blood came from his head.

Darius shouted useless. All of you useless. Fifty royal knights lost to one f rank trash and two old men. How.

Leon said he has twelve stone giants my prince. Each one is s rank. And the castle is alive. It rebuilds itself.

Darius sat down slowly. Twelve s rank stone giants. That was an army that could destroy a city. How did Kael get them. Was it the first emperor treasure. It must be.

He said in low voice to himself he found it. He really found it.

He looked at Leon and said you will not tell anyone about this. If anyone hears that Kael defeated you I will kill you myself. Go and hide.

Leon ran away with his men.

Darius called his secret teacher. The teacher was an old man with black robe and his face was hidden. The teacher was an ss rank mage who served the emperor for many years.

Darius said teacher Kael found the origin chamber. He has twelve s rank guardians.

The old mage frowned. He said that is bad my prince. If he grows more he will become threat to your throne. The origin class is the only class that can command all other classes. Even my ss rank is lower than his sss rank.

Darius said what should we do.

The teacher said we cannot send small army again. We must send bigger army or we must kill him with poison or assassin from far. But for now we should watch. Let him think he is safe. Let his kingdom grow small then we crush it with empire army.

Darius nodded but his eyes were full of hate. He said I want him dead before father sees him again.

Back in Ashenfall the story of Kael defeating fifty royal knights spread fast like wind. The villagers who ran away to other dead lands heard it. Traders who passed far road heard it. They said there is a new king in Ashenfall. A king who heals the sick and makes dead land green. A king who makes royal knights kneel.

People started to come.

On the fourth morning after the battle Borne came to Kael who was sitting on his throne training his mana. Borne said my sovereign come and see the gate.

Kael went to the castle gate. Outside the gate there were many people. About hundred people. Men women children. They were thin and tired. They carried small bags. They came from three other dead villages around Ashenfall where life was also hard.

An old man came forward and knelt. He said are you the sovereign of Ashenfall. We heard you make dead land green and you protect your people. Our village has no water for two months. Our children are dying. Please let us join your kingdom. We will work hard. We will serve you.

Kael looked at them. He saw hunger and hope. He remembered how he felt when he was abandoned.

He said everyone who comes with honest heart can join Ashenfall. From today you are my people. No one will be hungry again.

The people cried with joy and knelt. They said long live the sovereign.

Kael put his hand on the ground and used minor growth again. Green spread more. He said Joren give them food and water. Our food from the knights horses is enough for now.

Joren and Borne started to share bread and water from the castle store.

Old Mara and other old villagers helped the new people to build new huts inside the castle walls. The castle walls were growing bigger by themselves every day as Kael power grew. Now there was space for many more people.

Kael stood on the wall and watched. His kingdom was now more than hundred people. Yesterday it was twenty three. Today it was hundred and twenty. Tomorrow it might be two hundred.

Kael smiled. Water creation was very good for dead land. He tried it. He put his hand up and said water come.

A small cloud appeared above his hand and rain fell. The rain was small but it was clean water. The children opened their mouths to drink rain with laughter.

Joren shouted my sovereign you can make water now. We will never be thirsty again.

Kael said yes. And we will make farms.

He went down to the new green patch and used minor growth and water creation together. The soil became wet and green sprouts grew fast into small wheat plants. The villagers had never seen wheat grow so fast.

Old Mara said this is miracle. This is miracle.

Kael said this is just beginning. From today we farm.

He ordered the twelve stone guardians to help plow the land. The guardians used their big hands to turn soil fast. Hundred people worked together with happiness. For first time in many years they were not scared. They were building something.

At night there was small fire in the castle yard. People sang songs they had not sung for long. Children danced around green grass. Borne and Joren sat near Kael throne guarding but also smiling.

Kael looked at the fire and felt warm inside. For sixteen years he lived in cold palace where no one loved him. Now in this dead land he found warmth.

But he knew peace would not last long. Darius would send bigger army soon. And the empire would not let a new kingdom rise so close.

He stood up and everyone became quiet. He said my people listen. Today we are hundred. Tomorrow we will be thousand. The empire will come again because they do not want us to live free. So we must become strong. Every man will learn to hold sword. Every woman will learn to heal. Every child will learn to read. We will not be dead village again. We will be kingdom that even empire will fear.

The people shouted yes sovereign. We will follow you.

They raised their hands and knelt.

Kael looked at the north road where empire capital lay far away. He said in his heart Darius you wanted me to die quietly in dead land. But you gave me a kingdom instead. Thank you brother.

High above the castle a small blue bird made of light flew in circle. It was a message bird from the first emperor legacy. It was watching.
