A blur of white fur lunged at Ethan out of the darkness. He barely had time to raise Fireheart; the blade flared to life in his hands, cleaving the leaping beast mid-air. The creature yelped, a burst of embers dancing across its snow-white pelt as it fell.

Around their camp, chaos erupted. Three more wolves surged from the treeline, fangs glinting and eyes glowing an eerie blue. Another pair circled behind, low growls rumbling in their throats as they sized up their prey. Celestia pivoted toward two on the left, her wings flaring to make herself appear even larger. Flame already flickered at the edges of her lips. Nina planted herself at Ethan’s back, warhammer raised, turning in a slow circle to keep the encroaching pack in view.

One wolf darted at Nina with terrifying speed, snapping at her leg. She swung her hammer in a mighty arc, caving in the wolf’s skull

Outside, the blizzard raged, but in here there was a fragile pocket of warmth and light. For a long moment, none of them spoke. A titanic anvil rose at its center, and a massive stone forge belched flames on one side, tended by sweating dwarven smiths. The air was sweltering, every breath tasting of iron and ash. A massive door slid aside to reveal a vast chamber beyond. Jewels and gold glittered everywhere: piles of treasure, ancient weapons, and the bones of past challengers. Ethan stepped forward cautiously. In the center of the pile sat an enormous dragon, resplendent in black-golden scales. It coiled its tail around a heap of emerald and sapphire loot. Its yellow eyes opened and fixed on the trio. The dragon’s voice echoed in the hall like thunder. “So, the trespassers finally arrive,” it rumbled, smoke curling from its nostrils. Its voice was deep and strangely calm, as if amused. “You have braved illusions, traps, and guardians. Why continue?”Celestia brandished her spear. “We have sworn to destroy you,” she replied firmly, voice steady. Nina stepped forward, hammer ready. “That’s what we’re about to do,” Nina snarled. The dragon chuckled, a sound like clashing boulders. “Many have tried. An eerie hush fell. The tallest guardian raised a giant greatsword and growled. Its roar was low and gravelly, shaking loose pebbles on the floor. Ethan’s heart pounded as he gripped his blade. He lunged like a storm, sword overhead. “This ends now!” he shouted. He unleashed a spinning strike at the lead golem’s head, lightning-fast. But the blade met unyielding stone. With a sharp click, poisoned darts shot from slits in the wall. “Heads up!” Nina shouted. She leapt aside and slammed her hammer against the dart launcher. Metal shards and venomous shafts flew apart as the mechanism splintered. Ethan rolled away just as a second volley erupted; the darts clanged harmlessly off the chamber wall.“Nice timing,” Ethan panted, wiping poison from his cheek. He staggered upright, breathing hard. Celestia crouched beside the wrecked trap. “Dragon essence,” she observed, tracing the dragon-carved glyphs on the broken pieces. “These traps feed on it. Every trap bears the draconic m
