The black Ferrari cut through midtown traffic like a blade through silk.

Ethan Carter sat in the passenger seat, one hand resting on a tablet, the other loose at his side. His suit was charcoal gray. His sunglasses hid his eyes. On the screen, a news article glowed: Richard Carter grinning beside his brother at a press conference, the word MAYOR printed in bold red letters beneath them.

Ethan's lip curled.

"Can't believe I'm the son of a man like that," he muttered. His thumb hovered over his father's frozen smile. "Enjoy it while it lasts, Richard. That grin of yours? I'm going to peel it off your face. Slowly."

The Ferrari slowed. The glass tower of Pinnacle Industries rose ahead, catching the sun like a mirror.

Three years ago, Ethan had dreamed of walking into this building as Richard's heir. Of earning his place. Of being wanted.

That boy was dead. The river took him. And what climbed out didn't need anyone's approval.

The car stopped. Aaron Brooks, his assistant, was already at the door, holding it open. Ethan stepped out. His shoes hit the pavement with a clean, sharp sound. He adjusted his cuffs and walked toward the lobby without looking back.

Inside, employees straightened in their chairs. A few bowed their heads. Ethan gave them a thin smile — polite, empty, gone before it landed.

The boardroom was on the forty-second floor. Aaron knocked twice, then opened the door. Ethan walked in like he owned the place.

And there she was.

Sandra Voss sat at the far end of the long table. Short dark hair. A cream blouse. A smile stretched wide across her face when she saw him — the kind of smile she reserved for important clients.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Carter," she said, warm as honey.

"Afternoon." Ethan didn't look at her twice. He pulled out his chair, sat down, and opened his folder.

Sandra's smile faltered. She cleared her throat and sat back down.

The meeting lasted two hours. Ethan spoke in clean, sharp sentences. Numbers. Projections. Deadlines. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to. Every word landed like a hammer wrapped in velvet.

When it ended, Ethan stood immediately. Aaron was at his side in half a step. They headed for the door.

"Mr. Carter!"

Ethan paused. Turned his head slightly.

Sandra hurried toward him, heels clicking on the polished floor. "Thank you for coming today. I know your schedule must be incredibly tight—"

Ethan pulled off his sunglasses.

He faced her fully. Let her see his eyes. His face. All of it.

"You really don't recognize me?" His voice was low. Amused. Cold as lake water in January.

Sandra blinked. Her smile froze. She studied him — the jaw, the brow, the shape of his mouth. Something tugged at the back of her memory. Something old and buried.

"I—of course I know you, sir. You're my client," she said quickly, forcing the smile back.

Ethan laughed. A short, hollow sound.

"After everything you did to get rid of us," he said, tilting his head, "have you been sleeping well? Living comfortably?" He stepped closer. Lower. "Take a moment. Think about your sins. But don't think too long. It's too late for guilt." His lips barely moved. "Now's the time you should be watching your back. Because I'm coming. From every direction you can't see."

He slid his sunglasses back on. Turned. Walked away.

Behind him, Sandra stood frozen. Her breath came shallow. Her fingers pressed against her own mouth. The face. The eyes. The voice underneath the confidence.

*No. No, that's impossible.*

"Ethan?" The name slipped out like a wound opening. "Ethan Carter?" Her whole body shook. "H-he's alive? How is he — how is he *here*?"

---

The café was small. Tucked between a bookstore and a dry cleaner on a quiet street. The sign above the door read **E&L Café** in soft gold letters.

Ethan pushed through the glass door. The smell of espresso and warm bread wrapped around him. And there, in the corner by the window, sat a girl with long hair bent over a notebook.

He walked toward her. Slow. Easy. The kind of walk a man takes when he's coming home.

"Liv."

She looked up.

Her pen dropped. Her eyes went wide, then wet, then bright all at once.

"*Ethan!*" She shot to her feet so fast the chair scraped backward. "Oh my God. Is this — is this actually you?"

"Who else would it be?" He slid into the seat across from her, a real smile breaking through.

Olivia pressed both hands to her cheeks. "You answered my DM. After three years of nothing — three years, Ethan — you just *answered*, and I thought someone hacked your account, and then you said you'd come here, and I—" She stopped. Breathed. Laughed. "I can't believe you're actually sitting in front of me."

"Sorry I disappeared," he said softly. "But I'm here now. That's what matters."

Her gaze dropped to his ears. She leaned forward, studying them. "Your hearing aids. You're not wearing them."

Ethan shook his head. "Treatment worked. I can hear everything now. No more being sick every other week, either."

Olivia let out a long, shaky breath. Her eyes glistened. "I missed you so much. You have no idea." She gestured at the café around them. "I named this place after us. E and L. Ethan and Liv. I kept hoping that one day you'd walk through that door and see it. And know I was still here."

Ethan looked at the sign on the wall behind the counter. *E&L Café.* His chest tightened.

"E and L," he repeated. And then they both laughed. Soft. Warm. Like something healing.

Olivia fidgeted with her napkin. Her fingers twisted the paper into a tight roll. She bit her lip.

"Ethan."

"Yeah?"

"Are we... I mean, what we had before. Is it still—" She couldn't finish.

Ethan reached across the table and took her hand. "You're still my girl, Liv. We never broke up. Did we?"

Olivia's face lit up like a sunrise. She grabbed his arm and pulled him to his feet. "Then we're going on a date. Right now. You owe me three years of dates, Ethan Carter, and you're paying for all of them today."

He laughed. Actually laughed. Full and free. "Alright. All day. Whatever you want."

She looped her arm through his and dragged him toward the door.

---

They ate at the diner near their old high school. They rode the Ferris wheel at Maplewood Park until the lights came on. They hit Liberty Mall and didn't stop for two hours. Aaron trailed behind them, arms full of shopping bags, looking long-suffering but loyal.

Olivia checked her phone and smiled. "My mom says she's coming to drop off my ring. She found it at her office. Can we wait here for her?"

"Sure." Ethan guided her to a bench near the fountain. They sat down together.

A minute passed. Ethan stood. "Give me five minutes. Restroom."

Olivia nodded. Ethan brushed his fingers through her hair, then turned and walked toward the hallway.

He was gone maybe ten minutes.

When he came back around the corner, he saw Olivia sitting on the bench. And across from her, handing her a small silver ring, was a woman with short dark hair and a cream blouse.

Ethan stopped.

His blood went cold.

Sandra Voss.

His eyes moved from Sandra to Olivia. Back again. The ring. The way Olivia called her *Mom*. The way Sandra's hand rested on Olivia's cheek like she'd done it a thousand times.

*Liv's mother.*

*Her mother is Sandra Voss.*

Ethan stood frozen in the hallway, the noise of the mall fading into a high, thin ring in his ears.
