The painting stretched across the entire wall of the study. Green hills. A silver river cutting through the valley. Horses grazing under a wide sky. And on the cliff above it all, a lone figure in black, standing still as stone.

Samuel Graves stared at that figure the way a man stares at a grave he visits every Sunday.

"Five hundred years," he whispered. His fingers traced the edge of his walking cane. "Five hundred years, and not one soul has broken that seal. Must I wait another lifetime, son?"

He had lived through centuries. Wars. Plagues. The rise and fall of cities. He'd buried his name, built a fortune, and worn the mask of a successful businessman so the modern world wouldn't lock him in a lab. All for one reason. One impossible hope.

Five hundred years ago, the warrior known as Ethan Carter — his boy — had been struck down by an enemy. His spirit was chained beneath the river, locked inside a water seal so strong that no living person could crack it. The only way to break it: a dying boy, falling into that exact river, at the exact moment of a solar eclipse.

Impossible. And yet Samuel never stopped waiting.

"Whoever frees you," Samuel said to the painting, "I'll give them everything. Every dollar. Every property. Every wish they have. And then, son, we can finally rest."

The glass over the painting rattled.

Samuel froze.

The painted river *moved*. The water rippled. The colors shifted like something alive was pushing through the canvas from the other side.

His breath caught. His hands shook around the cane.

"No," he breathed. Then louder: "*No.*"

He grabbed the cane and ran.

---

The water hit Ethan like concrete.

Cold. Black. Crushing. His broken body sank beneath the surface, and the sky above him went dark — not from the water, but from the moon sliding across the sun. An eclipse. The world held its breath.

And something beneath the river *woke*.

The seal shattered like glass. Five hundred years of chains snapped in a single heartbeat. A force — old, vast, burning — rushed upward through the current and slammed into Ethan's chest.

His eyes flew open.

The brown was gone. Both irises burned a deep, electric blue.

Ethan's body moved without his permission. His arms cut through the water. His legs kicked. He rose toward the fading light above, pulled by something that was not entirely him.

---

He broke the surface gasping. The eclipse still dimmed the sky into a bruised purple. The river churned around his waist, cold and alive.

And there, on the muddy bank, stood an old man with a cane. White hair. Sharp eyes. A suit that cost more than Ethan's whole life.

The old man stared at him. His lips trembled.

"Ethan?" His voice cracked. "Is that you, boy?"

Ethan blinked. The blue faded slowly from his eyes, but something stayed — something old and heavy settled behind his ribs like a second heartbeat. He opened his mouth.

"Father," he said. The word didn't feel like his own. It felt borrowed. Ancient. "I'm here."

Then his legs gave out.

Samuel caught him before the water could take him back. The old man's grip was iron. He pulled Ethan against his chest, and the world around them blurred, folded, and vanished.

---

Ethan woke to the smell of fresh linen and warm bread.

The room was enormous. High ceilings. Dark wood floors. A window letting in golden afternoon light. He didn't recognize any of it. His brain felt like wet paper — soft, tearing, unable to hold a shape.

The door opened. The old man from the river walked in, followed by two servants pushing a cart loaded with food.

"You're confused," the old man said. Not a question. He smiled, gentle, like a grandfather who'd been waiting a very long time for a visit. "I'll show you. It'll be easier than explaining."

"Who are you?" Ethan's voice came out rough. Dry.

"My name is Samuel Graves. I've been a martial arts master for more years than you can count. Centuries, kid. I've been alive for centuries."

Ethan stared. "That's not possible."

"Sit up. Cross your legs. I'll show you."

Ethan didn't know why he obeyed. Maybe it was the way the old man's eyes held no lies. Maybe it was the strange warmth still humming under his skin. He sat up and crossed his legs on the bed.

Samuel stepped forward and pressed both thumbs against Ethan's temples.

The world went white.

Then Ethan *saw*. Not with his eyes. With something deeper. He saw the warrior in black, chained beneath roaring water. He saw centuries pass like seconds — seasons turning, cities rising, and one old man standing at the river's edge, waiting. He saw himself, broken and bleeding, sinking into that same river. And he saw the spirit rush into him like fire into dry wood.

The vision released him. Ethan gasped, stumbling forward.

"You saw it," Samuel said softly.

Ethan's hands shook. His throat was tight. There was no arguing with what he'd just lived inside his own skull.

"What... what do I do now?"

Samuel's eyes lit up. "Everything I promised. My money. My properties. Every wish you have — it's yours. One condition." He held up a finger. "You carry our power. All of it. And one day, you pass it to your children. That way, we live forever. Even after we're gone."

Ethan sat still. The offer was too large to hold in his hands.

Then the memory hit him. His mother's face, gray and burning with fever. The needle in his arm. The men in black. The river swallowing him whole.

His jaw tightened. His fingers curled into the sheets.

*They did this to me. They did this to Mom. And I couldn't stop them. I was nothing.*

"I'll do it," Ethan said. His voice was quiet. Steady.

Samuel smiled wide. "Good. I'll train you. You'll learn to control every drop of this power. And one day, you'll teach it to the next generation."

"What about my mom?" Ethan's voice rose. "She was sick. They took her. I don't know where she is. I have to find her—"

"You can't leave." Samuel's tone was firm but not cruel. "Not while the warrior's spirit is settling into your body. If you walk out that door now, you lose everything I'm offering. And you'll be weak. Those people who took your mother — they have money. Power. You go after them now, and they'll crush you."

Ethan's mouth opened. Closed.

The old man was right. He knew it in his gut. A sick boy with no money and no name couldn't fight men in black SUVs.

"I'll stay," Ethan said. The words tasted like iron. "I'll train. I'll do whatever you ask. And when it's done—" His eyes burned. "I'll find every single one of them. And they'll pay."

---

Three years.

Three years of bruises and broken knuckles. Of waking before dawn and collapsing after midnight. Samuel taught him to fight — not like a brawler, but like water, like wind, like something that couldn't be held. Between the strikes and the forms, Ethan learned boardrooms and balance sheets, contracts and acquisitions. The Vanguard Group's empire would be his to command.

Then came the final day.

Iron Ridge. A cliff high above the tree line, where the wind screamed and the sky stretched endless and gray. Samuel stood across from Ethan, and between them, the air shimmered with something ancient.

The old man placed his palm on Ethan's chest. The warrior's spirit stirred inside Ethan like a living thing.

"It's time," Samuel whispered.

The transfer hit like a lightning bolt. Ethan's back arched. His vision went white. Every bone, every muscle, every cell in his body *sang*. And when it was over, Samuel Graves was gone. The warrior's presence was gone. Just wind. Just sky. Just Ethan, standing alone on the edge of the world.

He looked down at his hands. They were steady. Strong. Full of something that hummed like a live wire.

Ethan smiled. It was not a kind smile.

"I'm coming for you. All of you." The wind carried his words into the void. "Wait for me. My name is Ethan Carter. And this time, I'm not the boy you threw in the river."
