Chapter 1. Drowned, They Said

The words sat heavy in Ethan Carter's throat for a long time before they finally came out.

"They beat me again because I stood up for my girlfriend. They were messing with her, and I stepped in."

His voice was rough, barely more than a whisper. The hospital room smelled like antiseptic and cold metal. Every breath pulled at the bruises across his ribs.

Beside the bed, Margaret Carter clenched her fists so hard her knuckles turned white. She shot up from the plastic chair, eyes burning. "I'm going to find those kids. I'm going to make them pay."

But Richard Carter stepped in front of her.

"Don't make this bigger than it is, Meg."

Margaret stared at him like he'd slapped her. "What did you just say?" She pointed a shaking finger at Ethan's broken body on the bed. "Our son almost died, Richard! We have to do something. We have to press charges, call the police—"

"One of those boys is the son of my business partner." Richard's voice was flat. Cold. "I'm not losing a deal with Summit Holdings over a schoolyard fight. Do you know how much money that's worth?"

The silence that followed was worse than shouting.

Ethan watched his mother's face twist. Her jaw tightened. Her eyes went wide and wild, like an animal cornered in a trap.

"Is that all that's in your head, Richard? Money?" Her voice cracked. "Your son was beaten half to death, and you're worried about a contract? He's your child!"

"Everyone needs money, Margaret. You think this hospital bill is cheap?"

A dry, broken laugh escaped Ethan's lips. His eyes were red, wet, but no tears fell. He forced himself upright despite the pain screaming through his body.

"You've always put us second, Dad." His voice was hoarse, scraping against his throat. "Every single day, you hurt Mom by treating that other woman like she matters more. And I stayed quiet. Because I knew Mom still loved you."

Richard's face went hard. "I wouldn't have done any of it if you weren't born deaf."

The words hit Ethan like a fist.

"Your mother couldn't give me what I needed," Richard continued, his voice rising. "One sick, disabled child. That's all she gave me. I needed an heir who could run Pinnacle Industries. Not a kid who drains my bank account on doctors and specialists."

Margaret lunged. Her fists beat against Richard's chest, her scream raw and ugly. "You monster! You absolute monster!"

Before the nurses could hear, Richard shoved her. Hard. Margaret hit the tile floor with a dull thud.

Then he walked out. The door clicked shut behind him.

Margaret stayed on the floor, crying into her hands. Her whole body shook. Ethan watched from the bed, his chest tight, his broken ribs aching with every shallow breath. He wanted to get up. He couldn't.

*If I had power,* he thought, staring at the ceiling, *none of this would happen to her. But what can I do?*

The question had no answer.

---

Margaret filed for divorce the next morning.

Ethan was sent to his grandparents' house in Oakdale while she handled the paperwork. Days passed. Then a full week. No calls. No texts. Nothing.

The silence ate at him.

On the eighth day, Ethan skipped school. He grabbed his backpack, hailed a cab, and gave the driver the address in Fairview. The big house. His father's house.

The taxi pulled up to the iron gate. Ethan paid the fare and walked up the stone path, each step sending a dull ache through his healing ribs. He pressed the doorbell.

The door opened. Sandra Voss stood there, short dark hair framed around a sharp face. Her eyes widened when she saw him. She started to close the door.

Ethan shoved his shoulder against it and pushed through.

"Mom!" he called out, his voice cracking.

Sandra grabbed his arm, fingers digging in. "Your mother isn't here. She left after she filed the divorce papers against my husband."

Ethan pulled out his phone. The tracking app glowed on the screen. A blue dot. Inside this house. Second floor.

He held the screen up. Sandra's face went pale. She swallowed hard and stepped back.

Ethan took the stairs two at a time, ignoring the pain. His mother's bedroom door was locked. He ran to his old room across the hall, yanked open the nightstand drawer, and grabbed the spare key.

The lock clicked. The door swung open.

Margaret lay on the bed, barely moving. Her skin was gray. Her lips were dry and cracked. She looked like she hadn't eaten in days.

"Mom!" Ethan dropped to his knees beside the bed. Tears finally spilled over. "Mom, what happened to you?"

Her eyelids fluttered open. Her hand lifted, weak and trembling, and found his arm.

"E-Ethan... your father... and that woman..." Her voice broke apart like dry leaves. "You have to go. Get out of here. Now."

Ethan's jaw locked. His hands curled into fists. "I'll kill them—"

"No." Margaret shook her head, barely able to move it. "Ethan... it's dangerous—" A violent cough seized her. Her whole body convulsed. Ethan touched her forehead and pulled his hand back. She was burning up.

"Don't leave me, Mom. Please."

He didn't think. He couldn't think. He slid his arms under her and lifted. She weighed almost nothing. Her head lolled against his shoulder. He carried her down the stairs, through the foyer, and out the front door.

Behind him, hidden in the shadow of the hallway wall, Sandra watched. She pulled out her phone, typed a quick message, and smiled.

---

The family driver was waiting in the black sedan. Ethan laid his mother across the back seat and climbed in beside her. "Hospital. Now. Please."

The car pulled away. But five minutes in, Ethan noticed the streets getting narrower. Quieter. The tall buildings of Fairview gave way to empty lots and chain-link fences.

"Hey, I think we're going the wrong way," Ethan said, leaning forward.

"Shortcut, Mr. Carter. Beats the traffic on the highway," the driver said without turning around.

Ethan frowned. His stomach twisted. He looked down at his mother. Her breathing was shallow. Her lips had turned blue. "Just... hold on, Mom. Almost there."

The car stopped. Hard. Ethan's hand shot out to steady his mother's head before it hit the seat in front.

Through the windshield, he saw them. Five men. Big. Dressed in black. Walking toward the car like they owned the street.

"What's going on?" Ethan asked.

"I don't know, sir," the driver said. His voice was too calm.

"Drive. Just drive through them. My mother is dying."

Before the engine could roar, a fist smashed through the windshield. Glass exploded inward. Ethan flinched, shielding his mother's face.

"Open the doors! Now! Or everyone in this car dies!"

The locks clicked. The driver opened them.

Ethan's mouth opened to shout, but the door beside him was already yanked wide. A hand grabbed his arm. A needle sank into his skin.

"ARGH!"

The pain was sharp and hot. Then cold. Then nothing. The man's eyes were the last thing Ethan saw — dark, empty, hidden behind a black cloth mask.

"W-who are you—"

The dark swallowed him.

---

They dragged Ethan's body out of the sedan. The driver watched for a moment, then put the car in gear and drove back toward Fairview. Back toward Richard Carter's house. He worked for them. He'd always worked for them.

The black SUV carried Ethan deep into the trees past Willow Creek. The road turned to dirt. The air smelled like wet earth and pine.

They stopped near the riverbank. The current was fast, brown, hungry.

One of the men injected Ethan again. Then they lifted him and let go.

The water took him. His body disappeared under the surface, pulled downstream by the rushing current. The men watched until there was nothing left to see.

One of them pulled out a phone.

"Boss. It's done. He's in the river. He drowned."

A pause on the other end. Then a click.

But the river was wide. And the current was fast.

And Ethan Carter's body was never found.
