The floor gave way beneath them both. Ethan grabbed for Lila's wrist as the ground disappeared, catching her just before she fell out of reach. They dropped together, tumbling through darkness, stone and dust falling around them like the whole world was collapsing at once.
"Hold on!" Ethan shouted. They hit the ground hard, rolling across a wide stone floor in a chamber far below the one they had just left. Ethan groaned and pushed himself up, still gripping Lila's wrist tight. "Are you okay?" he asked. Lila didn't answer right away. The gold light still glowed faintly beneath her skin, dimmer now but not gone. Her eyes had returned to their normal blue, wide with confusion and fear. "What just happened to me?" she whispered. "I don't know," Ethan said. "But we need to move. Now." A deep growl rolled through the chamber, low and heavy, shaking loose dust from the ceiling above them. Ethan turned toward the sound and felt his stomach drop. The goblin king stood at the far end of the chamber, but it wasn't the goblin king he remembered. In his old life the creature stood eight feet tall, ugly and slow, easy enough to kill once you knew its patterns. This one stood twice that size, its skin cracked with veins of glowing red light, muscles bulging in ways no goblin should ever have. "That's not right," Ethan said. "That's not what you're supposed to look like." The goblin king's eyes locked onto Lila. Not Ethan. Lila. "It's looking at me," Lila whispered, backing away. "Why is it looking at me?" "I don't know," Ethan said. "But we're not finding out the hard way." The creature let out a roar that shook the walls and charged straight at them, ignoring Ethan completely, its massive fists aimed right at Lila. "Move!" Ethan shouted, shoving her sideways. She stumbled clear just as the goblin king's fist slammed into the stone floor where she had been standing, cracking it wide open. Ethan swung his pipe hard across the creature's arm, but it barely flinched, swatting him aside like an insect. Ethan hit the wall and slid down, pain exploding through his shoulder. "Ethan!" Lila screamed. He forced himself back up, gritting his teeth. "I'm fine. Stay behind me." "You're not fine, you're bleeding everywhere!" "I've had worse," Ethan said, though his voice shook more than he wanted it to. The goblin king turned toward Lila again, ignoring the wound Ethan had barely managed to give it. It stomped forward, each step cracking the floor beneath its weight. "Why does it want her?" Ethan muttered to himself. "It's never done this before." He didn't have time to figure out the answer. He charged the creature, driving his pipe into its side with everything he had left. This time something felt different. A strange warmth spread through his arms the moment the pipe connected, and the goblin king staggered back farther than it should have. A soft chime rang through Ethan's mind. [Loyalty Rebate: Triggered. Strength Amplified x2.] "What?" Ethan said, staring at his own hands like they belonged to someone else. He didn't have time to question it. He pressed the advantage, swinging again and again, each hit landing harder than the last, powered by something he didn't fully understand yet. The goblin king roared in pain, stumbling backward under the assault. "Ethan, look out!" Lila shouted. He turned just in time to see the creature's tail whip around, catching him across the chest and throwing him hard against the far wall. Pain screamed through his ribs. He hit the ground and didn't get back up right away. "Ethan!" Lila ran toward him, ignoring her own safety completely. The goblin king turned toward her the moment she moved, sensing weakness, sensing opportunity. It lunged. "No!" Ethan tried to shout, but the words came out weak, breathless. Lila spun at the last second and dove sideways, rolling toward a cluster of glowing crystals embedded in the chamber wall. Her hand slammed against one of them, desperate for anything to use as a weapon. The moment her palm touched the crystal, the whole chamber turned blinding white. Lila screamed. It wasn't a scream of pain exactly, or maybe it was, mixed with something else entirely, something that sounded almost like relief. Gold light exploded from her body, flooding every corner of the chamber, so bright Ethan had to shield his eyes with his arm. "Lila!" he shouted, forcing himself up despite the pain screaming through his ribs. Her whole body lifted slightly off the ground, suspended in the golden light, her hair floating around her like she was underwater. Veins of gold spread beneath her skin, climbing up her neck, across her face, down her arms, glowing brighter with every passing second. The goblin king froze mid-charge, suddenly still, staring at Lila like it had just remembered something ancient and terrifying. Then a voice boomed through the chamber, deep and heavy, coming from everywhere and nowhere at once, shaking the walls harder than the goblin king's roars ever had. "THE VESSEL HAS AWAKENED EARLY." Ethan's blood ran cold. "What is that," he whispered. "What is happening to her." The goblin king let out a sound that wasn't quite a roar anymore. It sounded almost like fear. It turned and fled, smashing through a section of wall and disappearing into the darkness beyond, abandoning the fight entirely. Lila's feet touched the ground again. The golden light dimmed slowly, retreating back beneath her skin until only a faint glow remained beneath her collar, exactly like when this all started. She swayed on her feet. "Lila!" Ethan rushed to catch her before she hit the ground. She collapsed into his arms, breathing hard, sweat soaking through her clothes despite the cold air of the chamber. "What happened," she whispered, barely conscious. "What was that voice." "I don't know," Ethan said, holding her steady. "But it knew you. It called you something. A vessel." "A vessel for what," Lila breathed. Ethan didn't have an answer. He looked around the chamber, at the cracked stone, the retreating goblin king's trail of destruction, the dying gold light still pulsing faintly beneath Lila's skin. In his first life, Lila hadn't awakened anything until years later, deep into their guild's rise to power, right before the battle that eventually took her life. This never happened this early. This never happened at all, not like this, not with a voice from the heavens announcing her like she belonged to something bigger than either of them understood. "Something's different," Ethan said quietly, mostly to himself. "Something's already changed." A soft chime rang in his mind again, quieter this time, almost hesitant. [Warning: Divine Attention Detected. An unknown entity has taken notice of Player: Lila Storm.] Ethan's grip on her tightened. "We need to get you somewhere safe," he said. "Now." "I can walk," Lila mumbled, though her legs clearly disagreed, buckling slightly the moment she tried to stand on her own. "No, you can't," Ethan said, pulling her arm over his shoulder despite the pain still burning through his own ribs. "Not yet." They moved slowly toward the chamber exit, Lila leaning heavily against him, the golden glow beneath her skin fading with every step until it disappeared completely, leaving her looking almost normal again. Almost. But Ethan couldn't shake the sound of that voice, deep and ancient, echoing through the chamber like a warning meant just for him. Something out there, something old enough to make a monster flee in terror, had just noticed the girl walking beside him—whatever it was, Ethan had a feeling it wasn't finished watching yet.Latest Chapter
A Name That Isn't His
The stone guardian's fist crashed down where Ethan had been standing half a second earlier, cracking the floor tiles into rubble."It's fast for something made of rock!" Sera shouted, rolling clear of a second swing."Aim for the joints!" Ethan called back. "Same as the Hollow Warden. The seams are weaker than the plating!"Sera drove her blade into the guardian's elbow joint, sparks of blue light bursting from the crack she opened. The construct roared, a grinding, hollow sound, and swung its other arm wide, forcing her to dive away from the pit's edge.Ethan circled behind it, slamming his weapon into the back of its knee with everything he had.[Loyalty Rebate: Triggered. Bond Strength Amplified.]The strike landed harder than it should have, cracking straight through stone that had shrugged off every earlier hit. The guardian staggered, one leg buckling beneath it."Now, Sera!" Ethan shouted. She didn't hesitate. She leapt onto its bent knee and drove her blade straight into the g
Weapons Down
The countdown ticked lower. Four minutes, thirty seconds.Ethan studied the stone door carefully, running his fingers along the carved symbols. Ancient text spiraled around a circular groove at the center, two handprints pressed into the stone below it."There," Ethan said, pointing. "Handprints. It wants something from both of us.""What kind of something?" Sera asked, already wary.Ethan pressed his palm against the stone. Words flared to life above the door, burning gold against the dark chamber walls.[Trial of Trust: To pass, both must offer a drop of blood freely, weapons lowered, backs turned to one another. Doubt of any kind will seal the chamber permanently.]Sera read the words twice, her face going pale."Weapons down," she repeated slowly. "Backs turned. In a room I've never been in, with a man I met three days ago, who just told me he's lived through the end of the world once already.""I know how it sounds," Ethan said."Do you?" Sera snapped. "Because from where I'm sta
Trust Has a Price
The shape moved through the smoke, slow and massive, its outline flickering strangely between shadow and solid form."It's not coming this way," Sera whispered after a long, tense moment. "It's heading north. Away from us."Ethan let out a breath he didn't know he'd been holding. "Small mercy.""Don't celebrate yet," Sera said, finally releasing his wrist. "Whatever that was, it means the tide isn't just early. It's sending things ahead of itself. Scouts, maybe. Or something worse.""Then we need to move faster," Ethan said, turning back toward the greenhouse."Not yet," Sera said.Ethan turned back, frustration building in his chest. "Sera, we don't have time for—""You knew my name," Sera said, cutting him off. Her eyes were sharp, fixed on him like she was trying to see straight through his skin. "Back at the school. Before I ever told you. How?"Ethan's jaw tightened. "Now really isn't the time.""Make it the time," Sera said. "Because I just followed a stranger into monster terri
Trust in the Dark
The massive shape moved slowly between two crumbling buildings, then turned down a different street entirely, its heavy footsteps fading into the distance.Sera let out a breath. "It's not coming this way," she said. "Not yet.""That's not exactly comforting," Ethan said."Nothing about today is comforting," Sera said, finally letting go of his wrist. "Come on. We need to get inside before something else decides we look interesting."They pushed through the greenhouse doors and kept moving, cutting through back alleys toward the dungeon entrance Ethan remembered from his old life. The streets around them stayed eerily quiet, too quiet, the kind of quiet that made Ethan's skin prickle with every step."How did you know my name?" Sera asked suddenly, breaking the silence.Ethan kept his eyes forward. "I told you already. Lucky guess.""That's not an answer," Sera said. "I've been thinking about it since the school dungeon. You knew my name before I ever told you. You knew things about t
The Herb That Blooms in Danger
Ethan burst through the warehouse door so fast he nearly fell."Where is she?" he shouted."This way!" Toby said, running ahead of him down the hallway. "Hurry!"Ethan's heart pounded so hard it hurt. He turned the corner into the small back room where Lila lay on a thin mattress. Her face was pale, almost gray. Sweat covered her forehead. Her chest rose and fell in short, shaky breaths."Lila," Ethan said, dropping to his knees beside her.Her eyes fluttered open just a little. "Hey," she whispered. Her voice was so soft he almost didn't hear it."Don't talk," Ethan said. "Save your strength."He looked at her side. The bandage there was soaked through with blood again, dark and wet, spreading fast."It reopened," Toby said, his hands shaking as he knelt down too. "The potion isn't working anymore. Her body is fighting it too hard.""Give her another one," Ethan said. "Right now.""I already did," Toby said. "Twice. It's not enough. Whatever hit her, it wasn't normal fire. It's still
The Storm Before the Storm
Ethan's hand shook over the button. His heart pounded so hard it hurt."Ethan, please," Lila whispered again. "Don't."He looked at her face. Pale. Weak. Still trying to stop him even while she was hurt."Okay," Ethan said, his voice cracking. "Okay. For you." He pulled his hand back. The red glowing words faded away slowly, like they were sad to leave.[Forbidden Skill: Cancelled.]He turned all his focus back to Lila. He pressed both hands hard on her wound. Blood kept coming, warm and fast. "Someone bring healing potions!" Ethan shouted. "Now!"A young healer named Toby ran over, shaking hands pulling a small blue bottle from his bag. He poured it over the wound. The bleeding slowed. Not stopped. But slower. "She needs more than this," Toby said, scared. "She needs real help." "Then we get her real help," Ethan said. "Move her inside. Careful." Two guild members lifted Lila gently and rushed her toward the safest room in the warehouse. Ethan wanted to go with her so badly. But t
