The stone walls of Bastian’s dormitory felt like they were shrinking. The heavy, rhythmic thud of boots in the hallway signaled the arrival of the audit team the Board’s lapdogs, tasked with stripping away the veneer of his sudden success to find the "rot" underneath.

Bastian paced the small room, his eyes darting to the loose floorboard under his cot where the forbidden text and his own frantically scribbled notes resided.

"They’re early," a sharp voice whispered from the doorway.

Bastian spun around. Camila Reyes stood there, her back to the hall, her expression tight. She had been the one to warn him, her presence in his room a breach of every social protocol they had, yet she didn't seem to care.

"Did you hide it?" she asked, her eyes searching his face.

"Under the floor," Bastian replied, his voice strained. "But they’re going to tear this place apart. They aren't looking for contraband; they’re looking for evidence of a breakthrough."

Camila stepped inside, closing the door firmly behind her. "You’re an idiot, Bastian. If they find your notes on the geometry, they won't just expel you. They’ll lock you in a cell beneath the mountain. Do you have any idea how much those vectors and sigils look like forbidden spell-craft to a traditionalist like Vane?"

"I couldn't just throw them away," Bastian countered, clutching his side where the phantom ache still lingered. "That’s my lifeline. That’s how I see."

"It’s a death sentence," she snapped. "Move. Now."

The heavy pounding on the door made them both jump.

"Academy Audit! Open up, Wijaya!"

Bastian looked at the floorboard, paralyzed. Camila grabbed his shoulder, her grip surprisingly strong.

"Listen to me," she said, her voice dropping to a fierce, urgent whisper. "Do you trust me?"

"I don't have much of a choice, do I?"

"Stop being difficult. Get into the closet. Leave the floorboard alone. I’ll handle the audit."

"You? Why would you?"

"Because if they find you holding a manual that explains how to break the Academy’s core mechanics, I’m the one who ends up guilty by association for being your ‘monitor’!" she hissed. "Move!"

Bastian scrambled into the cramped darkness of the closet just as the door latch clicked. He held his breath, pressing his back against the wall, his ears straining.

"Reyes?" A voice he recognized Instructor Vane boomed into the room. "What are you doing in the bottom-tier quarters?"

Camila’s voice shifted instantly, losing its edge and adopting a tone of bored, aristocratic annoyance. "Oh, Instructor Vane. I was just checking on the status of my assignment. The Board is quite concerned about the... anomaly, aren't they?"

"Step aside, Reyes," Vane grunted. The sound of heavy footsteps echoed on the floorboards. "We have orders to sweep this room top to bottom. Where is he?"

"He stepped out to the infirmary to get his ribs wrapped," Camila said smoothly. "He’s been a disaster all morning. I’m starting to think he’s just unstable."

"Unstable, yet he manages to drop Julian’s cousin like a sack of wet flour?" Vane’s voice was right by the closet door. Bastian felt a bead of sweat roll down his temple. "We’re looking for a catalyst. A conduit. Something that allows a zero-mana student to mimic high-tier kinetic redirection."

"I think you’re overthinking it, sir," Camila said. Bastian heard the rustle of paper the sound of his desk being cleared. "Look at this place. Does this look like the laboratory of a genius? It’s a pigsty. He’s a pathetic, desperate boy who got a lucky hit in a moment of panic."

"Luck doesn't leave a bruise like the one on Kaelen’s knee," Vane muttered. "That was a pressure-point strike. It was anatomical perfection."

"He spends all his time watching the seniors spar," Camila said, her voice dripping with dismissive contempt. "Maybe he just has a good memory for misery. I’ve been watching him. He’s not a prodigy, Vane. He’s just scared. Scared people are unpredictable."

Bastian heard the floorboards creak. They were walking over the very spot where his life’s work was buried.

"Check the floor," Vane ordered.

"Really?" Camila sighed. "It’s a wood-and-stone tenement, sir. The boards have been loose since the third era. If you’re going to act like a scavenger, at least do it quietly. I have an afternoon lecture to prepare for."

"I don't need your permission to conduct an audit, Reyes," Vane snapped.

"No, but you might want to consider the optics," Camila retorted, her tone sharpening. "Dragging a senior student into a mess like this because you’re afraid of a boy who can’t even hold a candle-flame? It makes the Board look desperate. It makes you look like you’re clutching at shadows."

The room went deathly silent. Bastian’s heart hammered against his ribs.

"You’re very protective of your target," Vane said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low register.

"I’m protective of my reputation," Camila replied instantly. "If he’s an anomaly, then I, his assigned mentor, failed to identify it. I’d rather admit he’s just a clumsy, lucky amateur than admit I missed something profound. It keeps my record clean."

There was a long pause. A boot scuffed against the floor, right over the hidden notes. Bastian squeezed his eyes shut.

Don't look down. Don't look down.

"Fine," Vane growled. "But if I find out you’re hiding anything if you’re covering for a student who is secretly manipulating Aether-flow outside of sanctioned guidelines you’ll be right there in the cells with him."

"Understood, Instructor," Camila said, her voice perfectly steady.

The sound of footsteps retreated. The door swung open and then slammed shut.

Bastian waited for a full minute, his muscles screaming from the tension, before he pushed the closet door open and stepped out into the room. Camila was standing by the window, her back to him, staring out at the courtyard.

She didn't turn around.

"They’re gone," she said, her voice clipped.

Bastian exhaled, his knees buckling slightly. He walked over to the cot and moved the floorboard, revealing the leather-bound book and the stack of loose papers. They were still there. Unfound.

"Why?" Bastian asked, his voice raw.

Camila turned to face him. Her face was pale, and her eyes, usually so sharp and predatory, looked exhausted.

"I told you," she said, crossing her arms. "I don't want my record tainted by your incompetence."

"That’s a lie," Bastian said, stepping closer. "You lied to Vane. You risked your position in the elite tier to keep them from searching this floor. You didn't do that to save your record."

Camila looked at him, her lips curling into a cynical, humorless smirk. "Maybe I just wanted to see what happens when you’re forced to actually fight. If they took you now, I’d never know if you were the real thing or just a flash in the pan."

"Is that it?" Bastian asked, his gaze lingering on hers. "Just curiosity?"

"Don't look for meaning where there isn't any, Wijaya," she said, walking toward the door. She stopped with her hand on the latch, looking back over her shoulder. "I saved you today. That puts you in my debt."

"I know," Bastian said.

"Good," she said, her expression softening for a fraction of a second a fleeting, almost imperceptible shift. "Because you saved me back there in the practice hall. When you didn't strike me down. You had the opening, and you didn't take the point. You let me keep my dignity."

Bastian blinked. "I didn't think that was a 'saving' moment. I was just... done with the fight."

"You were done, but you left me standing," she said softly. "In this place, being the one who’s left standing is everything."

She pulled the door open, the hallway light spilling into the cramped room.

"Stay under the radar, Bastian," she warned. "Julian Vane is going to be waiting at dawn. And unlike Kaelen, he doesn't care about the rules. He cares about the result."

"Why did you really help me, Camila?" Bastian asked, his voice quiet. "You could have let them take me. You would have been the hero who uncovered the 'glitch'."

Camila paused, her hand gripping the doorframe. She looked at the floor, then back at him, her gaze uncharacteristically vulnerable.

"Because for the first time in three years," she whispered, "this place is actually interesting."

With that, she slipped out into the hallway and disappeared into the shadows of the Academy, leaving Bastian alone with his secrets and the long, cold night that stood between him and his next fight.

The morning air was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, a jarring departure from the sterile, ozone-heavy atmosphere of the Academy. Bastian stood at the edge of the Ironwood Forest, the towering, jagged trees looming over the clearing like the teeth of a giant beast. Beside him, the other students murmured nervously, their gear clanking as they double-checked their packs.“Keep it together, Wijaya,” Camila muttered, nudging his shoulder. “Don’t look at the canopy like it’s going to eat you. Just find the marked trail and stay in the shade.”Bastian looked at her, his pulse steadying. “You make it sound like a walk through the gardens. We both know they didn’t drop us here just to hike.”Camila smirked, adjusting the strap of her bag. “Well, no. They want to see how we handle real-world resistance. The forest is literally designed to kill anyone who can’t hold their own. Keep your eyes sharp. Don’t trust the birds, and for the love of the stars, don’t eat the berries.”“I’m n

The moonlight filtered through the high, arched windows of the abandoned ventilation sector, casting long, fractured shadows across the damp stone floor. Bastian waited in the gloom, his breath hitching as a pebble skittered nearby."You’re jumpy," a voice remarked from the darkness.Camila stepped into the pale light, her usual crisp uniform discarded in favor of worn, supple leathers. She looked different more like a scavenger than a top-tier student."Can you blame me?" Bastian asked, wiping sweat from his brow. "If Vane catches us here, he’ll have my head on a pike and your reputation incinerated by morning.""Then we’d better make sure he doesn't catch us," Camila said, setting a heavy lantern on a crate. "Are you going to keep standing there like a statue, or are we going to train?"Bastian let out a shaky laugh, stepping into the dim illumination. "I’m ready. But I have to ask why are you actually doing this? You said you wanted to know if I was the 'real thing,' but this is a

The dawn light bled over the obsidian battlements of the Academy, casting long, sharp shadows across the training pits. The air was frigid, biting at Bastian’s skin, but the heat inside his chest that rhythmic, humming furnace of Aether kept the shivering at bay.He stood at the edge of the pit. Opposite him, Kaelen not the boy from before, but a different brute, a third-year named Thorne stood heavy-footed and sweating before the match even began. Beside the dais, Dean Halloway watched with impassive eyes, his presence a silent command for total order."You ready to get broken, Wijaya?" Kaelen grunted, rolling his shoulders. "I heard you got lucky against Valerius. Don’t think that’s happening twice."Bastian tightened his grip on his practice sword, feeling the wood groan under his pressure. "I don’t know. Why don’t you just start swinging and see what happens?""Cocky," Kaelen sneered. "I’ll remember that when you’re spitting teeth.""Are you going to talk all morning, or are you g

  • Chapter 5: Climb of the Lowly

The iron-bound book tucked against Bastian’s ribs felt like a live coal, radiating a heat that had nothing to do with physics and everything to do with the secrets it held. He ghosted through the corridor, the architecture of the academy now appearing to him as a series of light-blue vectors and gold-rimmed tension points. He reached his room, shoved the book under the loose floorboard beneath his cot, and collapsed. His heart was a frantic drum, but his mind felt terrifyingly sharp. The next morning, the Academy’s central courtyard was abuzz. A massive, shimmering scroll of parchment hung suspended in the air above the sparring pits the Ranking Board."Hey, look at that," a student sneered, elbowing his friend as Bastian approached. "If it isn't the ghost of the bottom tier. Are you lost, Wijaya? The infirmary is that way."Bastian didn't look at them. He focused on the board, his eyes tracing the names. His name, Bastian Wijaya, sat at the very bottom, highlighted in a pathetic, mut
