The dawn light bled over the obsidian battlements of the Academy, casting long, sharp shadows across the training pits. The air was frigid, biting at Bastian’s skin, but the heat inside his chest that rhythmic, humming furnace of Aether kept the shivering at bay.

He stood at the edge of the pit. Opposite him, Kaelen not the boy from before, but a different brute, a third-year named Thorne stood heavy-footed and sweating before the match even began. Beside the dais, Dean Halloway watched with impassive eyes, his presence a silent command for total order.

"You ready to get broken, Wijaya?" Kaelen grunted, rolling his shoulders. "I heard you got lucky against Valerius. Don’t think that’s happening twice."

Bastian tightened his grip on his practice sword, feeling the wood groan under his pressure. "I don’t know. Why don’t you just start swinging and see what happens?"

"Cocky," Kaelen sneered. "I’ll remember that when you’re spitting teeth."

"Are you going to talk all morning, or are you going to fight?" Bastian asked, his voice steady.

"Start," the Dean commanded, his voice a low, gravelly rasp.

Kaelen roared, a primal, guttural sound, and surged forward like a falling boulder. He didn't bother with finesse; he led with a massive, overhead swing meant to shatter whatever it touched.

Bastian stepped back, but the ground beneath his boots felt uneven, his internal sensors screaming.

ERROR: LATERAL BALANCE COMPROMISED, the voice in his mind buzzed.

He brought his blade up to block, but his stance was a fraction too wide. The impact was like being struck by a charging stallion. The vibration shot up his arms, turning his bones into needles of pain.

"What’s wrong, bottom-feeder?" Kaelen barked, bringing his sword down in a vicious diagonal arc. "Struggling with a bit of weight?"

"I’m just getting started," Bastian panted, his lungs burning as he inhaled, seeking that rhythmic cycle.

"You’re finished!"

Kaelen pressed the advantage, raining blows down with terrifying speed. Bastian retreated, his boots scraping through the gravel. Every block was a losing battle, his arms growing heavy, his vision blurring as adrenaline flooded his system.

"You’re fading, Wijaya!" Kaelen laughed, his eyes wide with the thrill of the hunt. "This is it! No more miracles!"

Bastian stumbled, his heel catching on a stray rock.

"Finally!" Kaelen pivoted, coiling his entire body weight for a strike that would have finished the duel.

In that heartbeat, time seemed to stretch. The world resolved into the golden geometry Bastian had come to fear and worship. He saw the red, pulsating vein of Kaelen’s brute force the absolute center of his power.

ERROR: STANCE OVER-EXTENDED. DEFENSIVE VULNERABILITY AT THE LOWER KNEE, the voice intoned with icy clarity.

Bastian dropped his guard entirely.

"You idiot!" Kaelen shouted, committing fully to the swing.

Bastian didn't block. He shifted, his body flowing with the grace of water, moving inside the arc of Kaelen’s weapon. He felt the wind of the blade pass inches from his ear.

"Wait, what?" Kaelen’s eyes went wide.

Bastian didn't hesitate. He thrust his wooden sword forward, not with raw power, but with precision, tapping the exact pressure point he’d seen illuminated in his mind.

CALIBRATION: 28% COMPLETE.

Kaelen’s entire structure failed. His knees buckled as if the tendons had been severed, and he hit the dirt with a bone-jarring thud. Before he could recover, Bastian was there, the tip of his sword resting against the hollow of Kaelen’s throat.

The courtyard went deathly silent. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath.

"You’re down," Bastian whispered, his chest heaving.

Kaelen stared up at him, gasping, his face white. "You… you didn't even use mana. How? You hit like a damn surgeon."

Bastian stepped back, the golden lines fading from his vision. He felt the familiar, crushing exhaustion, but his hand didn't shake. "I told you. You were just too heavy."

"That wasn't right," Kaelen sputtered, struggling to push himself up. He pointed a trembling finger at Bastian. "Nobody moves like that. You’re cheating! You’ve got something on you some kind of focus or conduit hidden in your gear!"

"Are you accusing me of fraud, Kaelen?" Bastian asked, his voice cold.

"I’m saying you’re a hack!" Kaelen yelled, ignoring the Dean’s stern glare. "You used forbidden items! I know it! There’s no way a bottom-feeder suddenly finds a rhythm like that!"

Dean Halloway stepped down from the dais, his robes swishing against the stone floor. He stopped a few paces away, his gaze piercing. "Is there a problem here, Kaelen?"

"He’s cheating, Dean!" Kaelen insisted, his voice cracking with desperation. "Check him! He’s using some kind of dampening field or a hidden catalyst. He’s not channeling; he’s bypassing the Academy standards!"

Bastian felt a cold sweat break across his neck. He looked at the Dean, waiting for the interrogation that would surely follow.

"Bastian," the Dean said, his voice unreadable. "Step forward."

Bastian stepped forward, his heart hammering against his ribs.

"Kaelen," the Dean continued, "you are accusing a peer of violating the fundamental laws of the Academy. Do you understand the severity of that accusation?"

"He’s not normal, Dean!" Kaelen shouted, his anger overriding his fear. "He’s a glitch! Just look at him!"

The Dean circled Bastian once, his eyes scanning him as if he were looking for invisible seams in his skin. Bastian kept his head bowed, his mind racing.

SYSTEM ALERT: HEART RATE ELEVATED. CORTISOL LEVELS CRITICAL.

"I’m not hiding anything," Bastian said, forcing his voice to remain calm. "I’m just fighting differently."

"Differently," the Dean repeated, a faint, humorless smile touching his lips. "Yes, I suppose you are."

He turned back to Kaelen, his expression hardening. "You were beaten by a superior tactical approach, Kaelen. Do not blame your failure on imaginary catalysts. If you cannot respect the outcome of a duel, you do not belong in these pits."

"But,"

"Leave," the Dean commanded, his tone brook no argument.

Kaelen scrambled to his feet, shooting a hateful glare at Bastian before turning and storming out of the pit.

Bastian stood alone in the center of the arena, his hands trembling now that the pressure had shifted. He felt the Dean’s eyes still on him.

"You have an interesting way of standing, Bastian," the Dean said quietly. "It reminds me of a theory I haven't seen in decades."

"I’m just trying to learn, sir," Bastian said, his voice barely a whisper.

"Are you?" The Dean leaned in, his voice dropping to a near-whisper. "Because from where I’m standing, you aren't learning. You’re remembering. Be very careful, Wijaya. The Academy has a long history of ‘correcting’ students who know things they aren't supposed to."

He turned on his heel and walked toward the exit, leaving Bastian standing in the cold morning air.

Bastian let out a breath he felt he’d been holding since the start of the match. He looked down at his hands. The golden geometry had faded, but the faint, residual hum of the Architect’s influence remained in his marrow.

ADAPTATION PHASE: 28% COMPLETE, the voice buzzed.

"I’m not a glitch," Bastian whispered to the empty, silent pit. "I’m the only one here who’s finally waking up."

He turned and walked toward the exit, his footsteps echoing against the stone. He knew the fight with Kaelen was just a prelude. Julian was waiting, and the Dean was watching. He had survived the morning, but the real test was yet to come. And deep down, where the voice lived, Bastian knew he was only a few steps away from something that would change the Academy forever.

He moved into the shadows of the corridor, his mind already calculating the next sequence, his body ready to adapt, to learn, and to overcome. The game was no longer being played by the Academy's rules. It was being played by his.

The morning air was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, a jarring departure from the sterile, ozone-heavy atmosphere of the Academy. Beside him, the other students murmured nervously, their gear clanking as they double-checked their packs.“Keep it together, Wijaya,” Camila muttered, nudging his shoulder. “Don’t look at the canopy like it’s going to eat you. We both know they didn’t drop us here just to hike.”Camila smirked, adjusting the strap of her bag. “Well, no. They want to see how we handle real-world resistance. The forest is literally designed to kill anyone who can’t hold their own. Keep your eyes sharp. Don’t trust the birds, and for the love of the stars, don’t eat the berries.”“I’m n

She looked different more like a scavenger than a top-tier student."Can you blame me?" Bastian asked, wiping sweat from his brow. "If Vane catches us here, he’ll have my head on a pike and your reputation incinerated by morning.""Then we’d better make sure he doesn't catch us," Camila said, setting a heavy lantern on a crate. "Are you going to keep standing there like a statue, or are we going to train?"Bastian let out a shaky laugh, stepping into the dim illumination. "I’m ready. But I have to ask why are you actually doing this? You said you wanted to know if I was the 'real thing,' but this is a
