Chapter 4: The Red Bait Strategy

The conference room walls were made of soundproof glass, yet inside Matthew's head, the ticking of the wall clock sounded like a sledgehammer pounding steel. The neuro-overload from the previous night had left behind a lingering ache behind his eyes. Every time he blinked, the Ares System's geometric web flashed across his vision in pulsing warning red.

"Mr. Valdes, are you still with us?"

The voice came from a two-meter display. Julian Vasseur, the European Union's legal representative, looked at Matthew through an encrypted connection from Brussels. His expression was difficult to read.

Matthew adjusted his tie. His hand trembled slightly, but he concealed it beneath the table. "I'm here, Mr. Vasseur. Please continue."

Beside Matthew, Sofia sat with perfect posture, her fingers dancing across her laptop keyboard. Across the table, Rodrigo Valdes reclined in a leather chair, puffing on a cigar with a smile that barely concealed his confidence.

"Very well."

Vasseur cleared his throat, his voice echoing through the sterile conference room.

"Based on the additional evidence uploaded by your assistant, Sofia, to the court server ten minutes ago, the Valdes Group is in an extremely critical position. The data explicitly shows funds being transferred into accounts that appear on the terrorism financing blacklist."

Rodrigo exhaled a cloud of cigar smoke. "How tragic, Matthew. It seems your good intentions to clean up the paperwork have uncovered a painful truth. You just handed our own family the rope to hang itself."

Matthew never looked at Rodrigo. His eyes remained fixed on the screen. "A noose is only dangerous to someone with a neck to put inside it, Uncle."

"Enough of this nonsense!" Vasseur interrupted, raising his voice.

"Mr. Valdes, based on this evidence, I am prepared to issue arrest warrants for the firm's executives..."

"One moment, Mr. Vasseur," Matthew interrupted calmly. "Have you verified the digital signature attached to that 'additional evidence'?"

Vasseur frowned. "What do you mean?"

"Sofia." Matthew spoke without turning around. "Open attachment C-14 on the main display."

Sofia hesitated. Her eyes darted toward Rodrigo.

Rodrigo gave a subtle nod, convinced Matthew was merely stalling.

The massive wall display changed. Instead of financial flow charts, it revealed a live transaction log connected to a shadow account in Lugano, Switzerland.

"Mr. Vasseur," Matthew began, his voice now carrying the flawless precision of a machine, "the file Sofia submitted had indeed been altered. However, I embedded a tracker in its metadata that automatically retrieved the original transaction logs from whichever server attempted to authorize those records."

Rodrigo's face began losing its color. "What did you do, Matthew?"

"I did my job, Uncle."

Matthew continued watching the monitor.

"Mr. Vasseur, if you examine the IP address that attempted to validate the falsified data, you'll find it wasn't located inside Valdes Tower. It originated from a private villa in Marbella registered under the name Elias Thorne, one of Mr. Rodrigo Valdes's asset managers."

Vasseur fell silent. His fingers began flying across his keyboard.

"And if you examine the actual financial transfers," Matthew continued, "those four billion euros were never routed to any prohibited organization. The entire scenario was fabricated internally. The real funds were being diverted into a holding account in Panama used to illegally purchase Valdes Group shares on the black market."

"You're lying!" Rodrigo shouted, springing to his feet so violently that his chair toppled backward.

"Vasseur, don't listen to him! He's only trying to save himself!"

"Silence, Rodrigo!" Vasseur barked from the screen.

"I've just received confirmation from Financial Intelligence. The IP address is valid. And we've detected a massive transfer of funds from Elias Thorne's account into a Cayman shell corporation whose beneficial owner is you, Rodrigo."

Matthew leaned back in his chair, folding his arms across his chest.

"Mr. Vasseur, I've already included all authentic evidence in the original encrypted data package. You'll find that Valdes & Associates is the victim of internal sabotage, not the perpetrator."

"We understand," Vasseur said coldly.

"A joint operation is being launched in Marbella as we speak to secure Mr. Thorne and all associated assets. This hearing is suspended pending physical verification. Mr. Rodrigo, do not leave Madrid. You are under close surveillance."

The screen went black. A deadly silence settled over the room. Sofia stared at her keyboard as though it had suddenly become a venomous snake.

Rodrigo slowly walked toward Matthew. His face burned crimson, his jaw muscles clenched so tightly they looked ready to burst. He bent over and planted both hands on Matthew's desk.

"You think you're so clever, don't you?" Rodrigo whispered, his voice trembling with rage.

"You sacrificed Elias? He's been my most trusted man for twenty years!"

"He was an incompetent pawn, Uncle. Just like your strategy."

Matthew met his stare. He saw the geometry of Rodrigo's fury, the erratic pulse in his neck, the widening pupils.

"You tried to burn this house down just to rule over its ashes. I merely made sure you were still inside when it caught fire."

"You have no idea what you've started, Matthew."

Rodrigo straightened and roughly adjusted his suit.

"The legal world may belong to you today. But in Madrid, the law is nothing more than paper that can be burned in an instant."

Rodrigo glanced at Sofia before walking out without another word. Sofia hurriedly gathered her belongings and followed him, leaving Matthew alone in the freezing conference room.

One hour later. Underground Parking Garage, Level Minus Four.

Matthew walked toward his Rolls-Royce. His footsteps echoed across the damp concrete. The smell of gasoline and wet cement hung heavily in the air. The Ares System issued an early warning. Anomaly Detected: Three targets behind Pillar C-12. Two targets behind the ventilation shaft.

Matthew stopped. He didn't turn around.

"Come out. I don't have time for hide-and-seek."

Five men emerged from the darkness. They weren't the professional assassins from Menton. They were Madrid street thugs, the kind Rodrigo hired for crude, dirty work. Standing at their front was Enrique, Rodrigo's towering head of security, a giant with a cross tattooed across his neck.

"Don Rodrigo sends his regards," Enrique said, casually spinning a metal baseball bat.

"He says his nephew needs a little lesson in manners."

Matthew looked at Enrique. He could have activated the Ares System and eliminated every one of them in seconds. He could have targeted nerve clusters, shattered shinbones, or blinded them permanently.

Instead...

Matthew didn't move. He deliberately lowered his shoulders, making himself appear weak.

Calculation: If I fight and win, Rodrigo learns my true capabilities. If I lose and get injured, he'll no longer see me as a physical threat. Status: Red Bait, Phase Two.

"Please," Matthew said, forcing a slight tremor into his voice. "I can pay you more than he did."

Enrique laughed. The sound was coarse and revolting.

"This stopped being about money a long time ago, Counselor. It's about respect."

Thud!

The first blow crashed into Matthew's stomach. The air exploded from his lungs. He dropped to his knees on the cold pavement.

Damage Analysis: Hairline fracture in the ninth rib. Respiratory efficiency reduced by fifteen percent.

"Is... that all?" Matthew coughed, blood filling his mouth. "My uncle... really... hired amateurs."

"Shut your mouth!"

Enrique's boot smashed into Matthew's face. His head snapped sideways and slammed into a tire. His vision doubled. Red flooded everything. Blow after blow rained down. Brutal. Merciless.

Matthew let them beat him. He allowed them to destroy his physical dignity. His arms protected his vital organs, but he left his face and back exposed. Through the blinding pain, Matthew focused on only one thing.

Enrique stood over him, gripping the blood-soaked collar of Matthew's shirt.

"See that? You're nothing without your grandfather and your law books."

As Enrique yanked Matthew closer for the final punch, Matthew finally moved. Not to attack. With an impossibly subtle motion, refined through years of isolation spent mastering object manipulation, Matthew's fingers slipped toward Enrique's belt. A silver key fob bearing the Valdes Group logo hung there.

It was the master access key to the private elevator leading to The Vault, the hidden chamber beneath the deepest basement level, a room inaccessible even through the central servers.

Click.

The key disappeared into Matthew's palm, hidden beneath the torn sleeve of his shirt. Enrique released him. Matthew collapsed onto the pavement like a discarded sack of grain.

"Let's go," Enrique ordered his men. "Leave the rat to crawl home. Don't let him die. Don Rodrigo still wants to watch him suffer during tomorrow's hearing."

Their footsteps faded into the distance. Silence reclaimed the parking garage. Matthew lay motionless on the cold concrete. His breathing came in ragged wheezes from bruised lungs. Blood streamed from his temple, pooling beside his face. Slowly, he rolled onto his back and stared at the flickering fluorescent lights overhead. The pain was unbearable. Yet inside his mind, the Ares System continued processing data at terrifying speed.

Matthew slowly raised his trembling right hand. Between his bloodied fingers gleamed Enrique's silver key. He began to laugh. A quiet, dry laugh that gradually grew into a cold echo filling the empty parking garage.

"You were wrong, Enrique," Matthew whispered into the darkness.

He spat a mouthful of thick blood onto the pavement.

"I don't need law books to destroy all of you."

He tightened his grip on the key until its sharp edges dug into his wounded palm.

"I only need you to believe you've won."

Matthew forced himself upright, leaning against the wheel of his car. He pulled out his phone, its screen already cracked, and dialed a three-digit number.

"Thomas..."

His voice was barely above a whisper when the call connected.

"Pick me up on Level Minus Four. And Thomas... have the private medical team waiting at the apartment. We have an uninvited guest inside the central system. And tonight... I'm going into their house."

Matthew looked toward the CCTV camera mounted in the corner of the garage. He knew Rodrigo was probably watching from his office upstairs. Matthew gave the camera a faint smile. A terrifying smile. The smile of a predator that had just lured its prey into the cage.

In the distance, the roar of Thomas's engine echoed through the underground garage, cutting through Madrid's bloodstained night. The legal war was over. The shadow war had only just begun.

The sixtieth floor of Valdes Tower trembled faintly beneath the deep bass of classical music flowing through the integrated sound system. Inside the main conference room, a circular chamber enclosed by bulletproof glass overlooking the Madrid skyline, the smoke of Cohiba cigars drifted around seven elderly men seated at a black teak table."To a new beginning," Rodrigo Valdes said, raising a crystal glass filled with Macallan 1926. His smile was broad, his teeth gleaming beneath the chandelier lights. "And to our beloved nephew, Matthew, who has finally found peace at the bottom of the Manzanares Canal."The other six men, the elders of the Valdes Mafia Council who controlled logistics, money laundering, and executions across the Iberian Peninsula, chuckled quietly. To them, Matthew had been nothing more than an anomaly that threatened stability."He had potential," said Don Carrillo, the oldest among them, his hands trembling slightly. "But he was too... clean. You can't run an empir

  • CHAPTER 9: THE PRICE OF LOYALTY (THE SACRIFICE)

The concrete floor of the logistics tunnel trembled every time the massive ventilation system overhead roared to life. The air was thick with the smell of engine oil, industrial waste, and rust. Matthew Valdes staggered forward, one hand gripping Thomas's shoulder while the other braced against the damp wall. His vision was still riddled with visual artifacts, flickering lines of static like a broken television screen."Just a little farther, Young Master. Two hundred meters ahead is the drainage passage that leads to the Manzanares Canal," Thomas whispered. His breathing was heavy, warm vapor escaping into the freezing underground air."Turn off the flashlight, Thomas. The light feels like it's making my optic nerves explode," Matthew growled. He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to navigate using nothing but the echo of their footsteps."Understood. Hold on to my belt. Don't let go."They moved through complete darkness. Matthew could feel Thomas's steady heartbeat through his palm. Th

  • CHAPTER 8: THE FALL OF THE HEIR

The darkness inside the Valdes underground isolation cell was more than the absence of light. It was darkness engineered with architectural precision, soundproofed, stripped of sharp corners that could be used for orientation, and kept at a temperature where the human body could never stop shivering.Matthew woke to a stabbing pain in the center of his forehead. Every heartbeat sent a burst of white static exploding behind his closed eyelids. The neuro-overload had forced him into a blackout phase. He couldn't see. He couldn't map the room around him. Ares, the system he had once taken pride in, was nothing more than burnt circuitry inside his brain."Grandfather..." Matthew muttered. His voice cracked, his throat feeling as though it had been packed with sand."Don Alejandro is still alive, if that's what you're asking. He's in a medically induced coma under my supervision," a deep baritone echoed through a hidden intercom. "But as far as you're concerned, he's already dead. Just lik

  • CHAPTER 7: A CHESS GAME OF LIVES AT THE VALDES MANSION

G-force pressed Matthew into the leather seat of the Gulfstream G650 as it sliced through the darkness above the Mediterranean. Far below, Madrid's lights resembled a burning circuit board. Matthew didn't feel the speed. He only felt time slipping away."Thirty minutes until landing, Young Master," Thomas's voice came from the cockpit, strained with tension."Too slow, Thomas. Put the helicopter down on the rooftop helipad. Don't use the main apron. The mansion is already in lockdown." Matthew wiped the dried blood from beneath his nose. His eyes remained fixed on the tablet displaying the secret live feed from his grandfather's bedroom. On the screen, Rodrigo calmly poured a clear liquid from a crystal bottle into Don Alejandro's glass of mineral water. His movements were steady, almost rhythmic. After Alejandro drank it and began coughing violently, Rodrigo simply stood there, checking his watch."That bastard is timing his death," Matthew hissed."We won't make it in time through t

  • CHAPTER 6: THE GEOMETRY DANCE IN MONACO

The air in Monte Carlo carried the scent of Mediterranean salt, high octane jet fuel, and niche perfume worth thousands of euros. To Matthew Valdes, the beauty of the French coastline was nothing more than sensory interference. Behind his Tom Ford sunglasses, the Ares System continued working, mapping every heartbeat within a twenty meter radius."Sir, your suit hides the bruises on your ribs perfectly, but your left shoulder is still three degrees too stiff," Thomas's voice came through the nearly invisible earpiece."Three degrees won't get me killed here, Thomas," Matthew replied as he stepped out of the Bentley Mulliner in front of the Hôtel de Paris. "What's Isabella's status?""Nothing. Interpol, intelligence agencies, even the black market data networks all come up empty. She's a black hole. She has no digital footprint before six months ago. It's as if she simply... came into existence.""Or she just changed her face," Matthew muttered. He stepped into the ballroom. Luxury exp

  • Chapter 5: Quiet Moment: The Missing Frequency

The apartment resembled an operating room more than a home. Minimalist in design, it was dominated by obsidian gray and bone white, with subdued lighting gentle enough not to strain the eyes. There were no family photographs. No paintings. Only glass walls overlooking the glittering lights of Madrid, which from the fortieth floor resembled the circuitry of a colossal electronic board.Matthew sat shirtless in a Hans Wegner leather chair. Beneath the sharp glow of a desk lamp, his body looked like the aftermath of a disaster. Dark purple bruises spread across his ribs, and the gash at his temple still leaked thin trails of blood."Hold still, Young Master. This is going to burn," Thomas murmured. The elderly man held a bottle of medical alcohol and a cotton pad. The moment the antiseptic touched the wound on Matthew's abdomen, his muscles seized violently.Matthew gripped the arms of the chair until the leather creaked beneath his fingers, but not a single sound escaped his lips."You'
