The metallic grip tightened around Arthur’s neck, dragging him deeper into the viscous, green chemical bath. The acid burned his skin, stinging his eyes until he could barely see through the murky liquid. Arthur thrashed, his boots kicking at the heavy, sunken chassis of the Boss unit. He reached out with both hands, clawing at the machine’s shoulder plate. It felt like trying to shove a boulder. The unit was dead, but its death throes were mechanical. Its arm continued to clamp down with the rigidity of a hydraulic press.

Arthur’s lungs screamed for oxygen. He reached into his tool belt, his fingers brushing against a jagged piece of debris he had jammed there earlier. It was the shard of reinforced glass he had used to breach the control panel. He grabbed it and jammed it into the Boss unit’s elbow joint. The glass shattered, but the sharp tip wedged into a secondary servo. The grip loosened just enough for Arthur to suck in a frantic, bubbling breath of chemical fumes. He kicked off the unit’s chest, pushing himself toward the surface of the pit.

He broke the surface with a wet gasp, spitting out a mouthful of acidic bile. His arms felt like lead, but he surged forward, his hands slapping against the slick, metallic edge of the pit. He pulled himself up, the acidic water dripping from his clothes and sizzling against the concrete floor.

"Arthur!" Ulya screamed.

She was at the edge of the collapse, her hand outstretched. She looked terrified, her hair matted with sweat and dirt. Behind her, the hangar floor groaned. A massive crack spiderwebbed across the concrete, and the entire structure began to tilt toward the central abyss. Cochos was already halfway to the main blast door, his face pale as he looked back at the carnage.

"Forget the gear!" Arthur wheezed, his voice raw. "Just run!"

He lunged for Ulya’s hand. She yanked him upward, her boots slipping on the slick surface as the floor tilted another five degrees. They scrambled toward the exit, their movements clumsy and desperate. The facility was literally tearing itself apart. The walls were buckling, and the ceiling panels were dropping like guillotine blades, shattering on the ground behind them.

They sprinted through the open hangar doors. The outside air hit Arthur like a physical blow. It was freezing, smelling of ozone and wet earth. They were standing on a concrete landing pad, surrounded by the dark, wooded hills of the research compound’s perimeter. Behind them, the massive facility began its final implosion. The steel skeleton of the building groaned and folded inward. It was a silent, terrifying collapse that ended in a muffled, ground-shaking roar.

Arthur dived into the dirt, shielding his head. A massive shockwave of dust and debris washed over them, pinning them to the ground. The earth shivered as the facility vanished into the earth, replaced by a jagged, smoking crater. Silence followed, absolute and ringing in Arthur’s ears.

"Is it... over?" Cochos asked, his voice a pathetic squeak. He was curled in a ball near the edge of the crater, staring at the ruin.

Arthur stood up slowly. His clothes were shredded, his skin was burned in patches, and his janitor’s uniform was stained with everything from chemical waste to monster blood. He wiped his face, feeling the sting of a deep cut across his cheek. He looked at his hands, expecting them to shake, but they felt strangely steady.

[SYSTEM UPDATE]

[SURVIVAL OBJECTIVE: COMPLETE]

[STATUS: EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH]

[REWARD: PERMANENT COMBAT PERK UNLOCKED]

Arthur stared at the interface. A bitter laugh escaped his throat. "Employee of the month. That is a joke, right?"

"What are you talking about?" Ulya asked, standing up and brushing the grit from her lab coat. She looked exhausted, her eyes searching the darkness for more threats. "We have to leave. There could be security teams sweeping the perimeter."

"I am done with this," Arthur said, turning away from the crater. "I am done taking orders from a screen that wants me dead."

He flicked his wrist at the interface, trying to dismiss it. Instead, the screen expanded. A new notification flickered into existence, glowing a deep, ominous violet.

[NEW MISSION: THE PLAYGROUND IS OPEN]

[OBJECTIVE: LOCATE THE REMAINING HARVESTED SAMPLES]

[PENALTY: SYSTEM WILL RECLAIM YOUR VITAL ORGANS]

Arthur froze. The dread he had felt in the lab returned, colder than the wind biting through his ruined shirt. He had thought the nightmare ended at the exit. He realized now that he hadn't escaped the facility. He had simply been promoted to a field agent for the very people who had built his hell.

"Arthur?" Ulya took a step toward him. "What is it? What does the terminal say?"

"It says the game is not over," Arthur replied. He looked down at the dark, dense woods surrounding the crater. He could hear the faint, mechanical whine of a drone echoing from the treeline. It was the same sound he had heard in the hallways, the same sound that had haunted every waking second of his shift.

Cochos stood up, his face losing the last bit of color it had left. He pointed toward the shadows of the trees. "Did you hear that? I thought there were no other containment sectors."

Arthur clenched his fist. The System wasn't just a survival tool anymore. It was a leash. He looked at his hands, feeling the phantom weight of the mop he had wielded as his only weapon. He wasn't a janitor anymore. He was a survivor, and the people who turned this world into a petri dish were still out there, watching.

"They are not just in the building," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low growl. "They are everywhere. And they are still tracking us."

A bright, red laser dot appeared on Cochos’s chest. The man didn't even have time to scream before the air around them ignited. A series of high-pitched whistles split the night, followed by the heavy, rhythmic thumping of heavy ordnance being unleashed from the darkness of the trees.

Arthur threw himself to the ground, grabbing Ulya and dragging her behind the massive steel chunk of a fallen support beam. The entire clearing erupted in fire. Tracers flew through the air, illuminating the forest in flashes of red and white.

"Get your heads down!" Arthur roared.

As the gunfire intensified, the System interface flickered once more, this time displaying a map of the surrounding forest with dozens of red pulsing dots. Each dot was closing in on their position at an impossible speed. The facility was just the beginning. The world outside was the real containment zone, and it was currently undergoing a full-scale purge.

Arthur grabbed a jagged piece of metal from the ground, his knuckles raw and bleeding. He looked at the red dots on the interface and then at the dark, encroaching forest. He knew he couldn't run forever. He was going to have to find the source of the signal, and he was going to have to clean it up himself.

"Ready to go to work?" Arthur muttered to the empty air.

He didn't wait for an answer. He jumped out from behind the steel beam, charging headlong into the line of fire as the trees exploded into splinters around him. The red dots on his vision began to blink rapidly, syncing with the rhythm of his own heartbeat. One of them was closer than the rest, moving with a predatory grace that told him exactly what he was facing.

Arthur skidded to a halt, his heels digging into the wet soil. Standing at the edge of the clearing, illuminated by the dying embers of the facility, was a figure in a white lab coat. It held a remote detonator in one hand and a device that matched the flickering blue light of Arthur’s System in the other.

The stranger smiled, the expression thin and cruel, and pressed a button on the device. A shockwave of blue energy rippled through the clearing, and suddenly, the entire System interface in Arthur’s vision shattered like breaking glass. The world went black, leaving him standing alone in the dark with only the sound of his own breathing and the heavy, metallic click of a weapon being readied just inches from his skull.

  • Chapter 9: The Boss Room Cleanup

Arthur threw himself sideways, his body hitting the cold hangar floor just as the energy bolt scorched the spot where he had stood. The concrete behind him hissed and glowed orange, the heat intense enough to singe his eyebrows. He scrambled toward a discarded janitorial cart, his fingers fumbling to grab the heavy metal bucket. The Boss unit did not hesitate. It pivoted on its hydraulic heels, the targeting laser tracing a frantic line across the room, seeking another heat signature."Arthur, get out of there!" Ulya screamed. She was pressed against a stack of crates, her face ghostly pale in the red strobe lights.Arthur did not answer. He shoved the bucket into the path of the Boss unit, hoping the metal frame would interfere with the machine's localized sensors. The unit fired again, vaporizing the bucket instantly. Molten liquid plastic and scorched metal sprayed across the room, creating a blinding, chaotic plume of debris. The System flared in Arthur’s vision, casting a neon gl

  • Chapter 8: Executive Meddling

"That is the final experiment," Imara whispered. "And it has been waiting for its meal."Arthur did not wait for the creature to emerge. He looked at Ulya and Cochos, his eyes wide and burning with a desperate, frantic clarity. The holographic projection of Imara stood perfectly still, her artificial smile never wavering as the blast doors began to slide open with a deafening grind of metal on metal."We have to move, now!" Arthur yelled, shoving his mop handle into the floor gap to prevent the door from fully locking."The data drive," Cochos stammered, pulling the silver object from his pocket. "She wants this. If we give it to her, maybe she lets us pass!""She wants you dead, you idiot!" Ulya grabbed Cochos by the collar and hauled him back toward the only available exit, a narrow ventilation shaft that had popped open when the floor shifted. "She is just playing with us!"Arthur looked toward the opening blast doors. A massive, shadowy limb, thick as a tree trunk and covered in p

The barrels spun up with a high-pitched, deadly whine, and Arthur slammed his body behind the desk just as a spray of bullets turned the metal edge into confetti. Sparks showered over his head, hot and stinging. He felt the floor tremble under the sustained fire of the combat drone."Move!" Arthur roared, grabbing Ulya by the back of her lab coat and throwing her toward a stack of heavy, lead-lined containment crates.Cochos scrambled behind him, his boots skidding on the slick floor. The drone marched forward, its hydraulic servos hissing. It fired again, the rounds punching clean holes through the furniture that shielded them."We are trapped!" Cochos yelled, covering his ears. "There is nowhere to run!"Arthur glanced at the overhead digital display. The timer was a taunting red blur. Twenty-nine minutes and forty seconds until the entire facility turned into a crater. He looked at the drone. It was an automated unit designed for crowd control, which meant it relied on motion track

  • Chapter 6: Inventory Management 101

Arthur swung his mop handle with a wet, rhythmic thud against the skull of the nearest beast. The creature buckled, its translucent skin tearing under the force of the reinforced plastic. Behind him, Ulya let out a sharp cry as a claw sliced through the sleeve of her lab coat, drawing a thin line of crimson across her forearm. Cochos had retreated into a tight crouch, his hands covering his head as the glass vats continued to shatter around them, releasing a cacophony of hisses and clicking jaws."Move toward the terminal!" Arthur shouted, his voice straining to be heard over the rising chaos. He didn't wait for a response. He lunged forward, grabbing a discarded heavy-duty glass shard from the floor. The creatures were fast, their movements fluid and predatory as they navigated the slick lab floor. One of them leaped at Arthur, its jaw unhinging to reveal rows of needle-like teeth. Arthur pivoted, slamming his shoulder into the creature to knock it off balance, then jammed the shard

  • Chapter 5: Stuck in the Shaft

The elevator jolted again, the sound of tearing metal screaming through the shaft. Arthur pressed his palms against the side wall to steady himself. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped animal. The single remaining cable hummed with tension, vibrating with every movement they made inside the cabin."Don't move," Arthur warned, his voice tight. "The weight distribution is all we have left."Cochos crouched in the corner, his eyes wide and unblinking. He looked at the floor of the cabin, which was now slanted at a precarious thirty-degree angle. Ulya gripped the handrail, her knuckles turning white. She looked up at the maintenance hatch in the ceiling. It was still bolted down from the outside."If that cable snaps, we fall three hundred feet," Ulya whispered. "We have to get out of this box, Arthur."Arthur nodded. He looked at his inventory. He had the mop, the wrench, and a heavy-duty carabiner he had scavenged earlier. It was not much, but it had to be enough. He stoo
