Chapter 1: The Mop is Mightier than the Scalpel

Arthur stared at the mess. A containment vat had ruptured, leaking a glowing, viscous sludge across the pristine white tile of Sector 4. Beside the puddle lay the remains of Ihza. The researcher’s lab coat was shredded, and a strange, translucent blue interface hovered in the air directly over her cooling body.

Arthur blinked, rubbing his eyes. The display did not vanish. It pulsed with a rhythmic, sickening light.

[SYSTEM INITIALIZED]

[TASK: SANITATION REQUIRED]

[OBJECTIVE: REMOVE BIOLOGICAL CONTAMINANT FROM FLOOR]

[REWARD: 1 STAT POINT]

"Are you kidding me?" Arthur muttered, his voice trembling as he gripped his mop handle. "The woman is dead, and you want me to clean the floor?"

The interface flickered, turning a harsh red.

[FAILURE TO COMPLY WILL RESULT IN TERMINATION]

Arthur looked around the hallway. The lights overhead buzzed, flickering in and out. The silence of the facility was heavy, broken only by the distant, wet thud of something heavy dragging itself through the ventilation shafts. He looked back at the corpse. Ihza had been a senior lead here. She had keys. He reached out, his fingers shaking, and pried the access card from her stiffening grip.

As his hand touched the plastic, a high-pitched alarm began to shriek. Red lights bathed the hallway in a pulsing, rhythmic glow.

[CONSEQUENCE DETECTED]

[THREAT LEVEL: RISING]

[TASK: SURVIVE THE INITIAL BREACH]

A metal panel at the end of the hall exploded inward. A mass of wet, gray muscle and oversized mandibles poured out of the wall. It was a specimen, a failed prototype from the sub-levels. It did not have eyes, but it seemed to sense his fear, snapping its jaws with a sound like a guillotine.

"Oh, hell no," Arthur whispered.

He didn't wait to see if it was friendly. He shoved the mop into his bucket, grabbed his cleaning cart, and slammed it toward the beast. The metal frame skidded across the floor, catching the creature in its middle. It shrieked, a sound that bypassed his ears and vibrated directly in his skull.

Arthur sprinted toward the janitorial supply closet. He dived inside, grabbing a rusted maintenance ladder that led to the ceiling vents. He scrambled up, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. Below him, the creature slammed into the closet door, splintering the reinforced steel with a single swipe of a claw.

"System," Arthur hissed, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he pulled himself into the tight, narrow duct. "What is this? What is happening?"

[DATA UNAVAILABLE]

[TASK: REACH THE SECURITY HUBS TO UNLOCK FORWARD PATHS]

[CURRENT STATS: STRENGTH 1, AGILITY 1, WILLPOWER 0]

He crawled through the darkness of the vent. The air smelled of ozone and rot. He reached a junction where he could look down through the metal slats into the main lobby. The carnage was absolute. Papers fluttered through the air, and overturned desks were scattered everywhere. He saw movement near the exit. It was a group of security personnel, but they were pinned down by two more of the gray, hulking entities.

He pushed forward, following the vent until it ended at a heavy bolt-lock door leading to the secondary stairwell. He dropped down from the vent, his boots hitting the floor with a dull thud. He quickly moved to the door and engaged the electronic deadbolt, hearing the satisfying clunk of the mechanism locking.

Arthur leaned his back against the door, sliding down until he hit the floor. He felt a moment of relief. He had escaped the hall. He had the key card. He was alive.

[SYSTEM UPDATE]

[NEW MISSION: THE DOOR IS NOT ENOUGH]

A massive dent appeared in the center of the door. The metal groaned as something on the other side slammed into it with enough force to warp the frame. Then, a long, serrated claw pierced through the steel, inches from Arthur's head. The door hinges screamed, the metal warping outward as the beast began to carve its way through.

Arthur scrambled to his feet. He had locked the door, but the wood and steel were buckling. He looked at the narrow corridor behind him, realizing it was a dead end. He had trapped himself in a furnace. The creature ripped another chunk of steel away, and a singular, blind eye peered through the gap, fixated entirely on him.
