Nobody saw that coming. Micheal Jordan—poorest kid at Quinton—dropping David Hwarthorne with one clean punch.
Micheal stood a few steps back, breathing hard, just staring at him. Never thought of himself as strong. But years of part-time work did it. Carrying boxes. Moving equipment. On his feet for hours. Never boxed a day in his life. Just plain strength from the jobs.
David grew up rich. Family made sure he could handle himself. Taekwondo, kickboxing, some other stuff. Always figured if a fight started he’d come out on top.
Problem was he never took any of it serious.
He believed something else was stronger than fighting.
Money.
To him money fixed almost everything. Someone stepped on his toes, family handled it. Someone got in the way, cash crushed them. Spent so long thinking money solved every problem he forgot the obvious.
Money doesn’t stop a punch.
David tried getting up. Arms shaking. Face full of pure disbelief. How the hell did he lose? How did a guy like Micheal put him down with one hit?
Pride hurt worse than the face.
Looked around. People staring. Some students already recording on their phones. Expression changed fast.
The livestream.
He’d set it up himself. Simple plan. Whole university watches him propose to Mia Ginn—one of the prettiest girls on campus. Everyone sees he got her. Figured it’d make him even more popular.
Instead hundreds of students were watching him on the ground after a broke kid punched him.
This kept going and the whole night turns into a joke.
Clenched his teeth. Needed control back.
“Mia!” he shouted. “What are you standing there for? Call security!”
Mia pulled her phone out. Still in shock but she called the hotel security right away. They weren’t far. Hotel already heard the noise. Guards came running.
They recognized David the second they saw him. Watched him pull up earlier in that expensive sports car. Knew better than to mess with him.
But when they got closer David was on the ground and Micheal was just standing there.
“What happened here?” one asked.
“Get him!” David yelled.
Guards grabbed Micheal’s arms. He didn’t fight. Already made his point.
Looked at David on the ground, then at Mia.
Before he could say a word two hard slaps cracked across his face.
Pa!
Pa!
Head jerked a little. Froze. Slowly looked around. Eyes found Mia.
She was glaring at him, furious.
“Enough!” she snapped.
Micheal just stared. Sting on his cheeks barely registered. What cut deeper was the look in her eyes.
She watched David insult him, shove him twice, humiliate him in front of everyone… and still she was mad at Micheal.
Eyes went hard. Didn’t say a thing. Let the guards pull him away.
Mia rushed to David. Crouched down, helped him sit up.
“Oh my God, David! Are you okay?” Worry thick in her voice.
David didn’t answer. Eyes stayed locked on Micheal as the guards led him off. Face burning with humiliation.
Over fifty thousand spent on dinner tonight. Everything planned—restaurant, decorations, ring, livestream. Supposed to make the proposal unforgettable.
Instead the whole university watched Micheal Jordan knock him down.
That poor student ruined everything.
Hands clenched. Never been humiliated like this. Going to make Micheal pay. Back on campus he’d show exactly what happens when someone embarrasses a Hwarthorne.
Turned and headed for his car. Mia followed quick. No idea what was in his head, but that look on his face made her uneasy. Something was coming.
Guards handed Micheal over to the police who’d shown up. He didn’t resist. Barely noticed anything around him. Mind still on Mia.
Six months. Six months believing she loved him. Extra shifts. Saved every dollar. Even sold his motorcycle so he could get her something special for her birthday.
Now it was over. Nothing left to say. She chose David. Done.
Officer cuffed him and walked him to the patrol car. Micheal said nothing. Just lowered his head and got in.
Ride to the station was quiet. Sat in back staring out the window, not really seeing. Kept hearing her words.
David can give me the kind of life I want.
First time it clicked—love alone was never enough for her. He’d given everything he could. Still not enough.
At the station he stepped out blank-faced. Officer took him inside to a small room.
“Sit here.”
Micheal sat. Door closed.
Sat silent a few minutes. Didn’t know what came next. Didn’t care.
About five minutes later the door opened. Officer walked in with papers, sat across from him.
“Micheal Jordan?”
Micheal nodded slow.
Officer glanced at the papers.
“You were involved in an altercation outside the Bell Crest Hotel tonight.”
Micheal stayed quiet.
“You’re being accused of assault and causing a disturbance at the hotel.”
Eyes finally moved to the officer.
“Assault?”
Officer nodded.
“According to the security staff, you attacked David Hwarthorne and caused a disturbance outside the hotel.”
Micheal frowned. Remembered exactly what happened. David pushed him. Twice. Nobody cared about that part.
Officer kept going.
“Because of the complaint filed against you, you have two choices. Pay a five-thousand-dollar penalty tonight, or you may be held for further proceedings.”
Eyes widened.
“Five thousand dollars?”
“Yes.”
Officer looked at him carefully.
“You’re a student at Quinton University, aren’t you?”
Micheal nodded.
“Then you should understand how serious this could become. If it turns into a criminal case it could affect your studies and your future.”
Head spinning. Five thousand. Where the hell was he supposed to get that? Barely scraped by day to day. Most of what he’d saved already gone.
Officer saw the worry.
“If you don’t have that much with you, you can make some calls. I’ll give you time to find someone who can help.”
Micheal looked up.
“How much time?”
“An hour.”
Officer pulled Micheal’s old phone from his pocket and held it out.
“One hour to sort the payment. After that I process the case.”
“Thank you.”
Took the phone, unlocked it, started scrolling contacts. Bitter little smile.
Not even twenty names. Not surprising. Most students had dozens, hundreds—friends from different departments, party people, classmates, people they called when they needed help.
Micheal never had that life. While others were at parties or trips or hanging out, he was working. Boxes. Customers. Deliveries. Looking for the next shift. No time for a long friend list.
Staring at the short list he realized how alone he really was.
Stopped scrolling. Eyes on the screen. Then thought of his dorm mates. Not rich, but the closest people he had at Quinton. Maybe if they pooled what they had they could cover the five thousand.
Dialed. Held the phone to his ear.
Rang twice. Third ring someone picked up.
“Hello? Micheal! Is that you?”
“Yes, Benson. It’s me.”
Short silence. Then Benson let out a long breath.
“Where are you? We’ve been looking everywhere!”
Micheal looked down.
“Police station.”
“What? What happened?”
Benson and the others had watched the livestream. Saw Mia with David, the proposal, Micheal walking in. None of them knew about the secret relationship. When security showed up the stream cut off. No idea what happened after.
Micheal gave a short version of what went down outside the hotel. When Benson heard the five-thousand demand he went quiet. Huge amount for college kids. They all knew Micheal didn’t have it.
“Don’t worry,” Benson said. “We’ll come get you.”
Call ended.
Benson turned to the others in the dorm.
“Need five thousand. Micheal’s at the police station.”
Explained. Room went quiet. None of them rich. Nobody had that kind of money sitting around.
Benson checked his phone. About twenty-one hundred left from his allowance. Asked the others. They scraped the rest together.
Left the dorm right away. Taxi to the station. Twenty minutes later they were there. Explained they came for Micheal. Directed inside.
Benson walked into the room.
“Micheal.”
Micheal looked up. First small smile of the night.
“Benson.”
Benson put a hand on his shoulder.
“You idiot. Scared the hell out of us.”
Micheal lowered his head.
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize. Just come home.”
They paid the five thousand. Officer processed the release. Before leaving, Benson thanked him.
Officer nodded.
“Just make sure he doesn’t get into another fight.”
Benson glanced at Micheal.
“We’ll make sure.”
Walked out together.
The second they stepped outside Benson couldn’t hold it in.
“What were you thinking, Micheal? How could you fight David Hwarthorne? You even know who that guy is?”
Micheal stayed quiet.
“You could’ve gotten seriously hurt,” Benson kept going. “Nearly got yourself expelled!”
Marcus nodded. “Something happened between you and David, you should’ve told us. We would’ve come with you.”
Greg added, “We’re your friends. Didn’t have to deal with it alone.”
Micheal looked at the three of them. They’d just spent almost everything they had to get him out. Not rich. Not powerful. But when he needed them they came.
Warmth spread through his chest. Despite everything lost tonight, he still had something real.
True friends.
“If you guys hadn’t come,” Micheal said, “I’d still be sitting in that cell.”
Looked at each of them.
“Thank you. Don’t have anything to give you right now, but I won’t forget. One day I’ll repay this ten times over.”
Benson pulled him upright.
“Come on. Stop that. We helped because you’re our friend. Don’t keep thinking about repayment.”
Marcus nodded. “Just stay out of trouble next time.”
Greg gave a small smile. “And don’t punch rich people.”
Despite everything Micheal almost smiled.
“I’m sorry.”
They started walking.
After a few minutes Micheal stopped.
“Guys… I appreciate everything tonight, but I need to be alone a while.”
Benson frowned. “Micheal—”
Greg gently grabbed his arm. “Let him go. He needs to clear his head.”
Benson sighed. Greg was right. Girlfriend of six months gone. Humiliated in front of the whole university. Fought David Hwarthorne. Night in a police station. Nothing they said fixed that.
“Fine,” Benson said. “But call if you need anything.”
Micheal nodded. “I will.”
Turned and walked away.
Benson, Marcus, and Greg stood watching as he got smaller and disappeared.
Benson lowered his head. “Hope he’ll be okay.”
Greg stayed quiet a moment. “He will.”
But none of them knew where Micheal was going… or what he planned next.

Micheal walked in and stopped.Private study. Big mahogany desk in the middle, papers and folders all over it like someone had been going through them a minute ago. Behind it sat an old man, seventies maybe, dark sweater over a white shirt. Nothing special. Guy you’d help cross the street without thinking twice.Micheal just stared. After everything Benthely said, after the whole drive out to this place, he’d pictured someone else. Powerful. Scary. People hovering around him. Not this. The old man was staring right back.He pushed his glasses up and looked Micheal over, slow, like he was checking every detail. Then he glanced at Benthely, who’d come in and closed the door.“Is this really Micheal Jordan?” Voice shook a little.“Yes, Master. He is Young Master Jordan.”The old man’s eyes went wide.Sat there frozen for a second. Then shoved the chair back and came around the desk way too fast for someone that age.“My God. Chapter 5
“Are you sure you haven't mistaken me for someone else?” Micheal asked skeptically. Even after everything the man had said, he still found it difficult to believe that someone this wealthy would treat him with such respect and call him Young Master Jordan. Nothing about his life matched the way this man was treating him. He was a poor university student who had spent most of his life struggling to survive, yet the man standing before him looked as though he belonged to a world Micheal had never even come close to entering.“Of course not, Young Master Jordan,” the middle-aged man replied with absolute certainty. “I have spent eighteen years searching for you. I would never mistake you for someone else.”Micheal stared at him silently. When the strange call had come earlier, he had initially suspected that someone was trying to kidnap him. After thinking about it, he had decided that it was probably just a prank. He had never imagined that the caller would actually send someone to find
Chapter 4
Micheal walked without any particular destination in mind, allowing his feet to carry him wherever they wanted while his mind remained occupied by everything that had happened that night. He had been walking for more than an hour by the time the exhaustion from the fight, the emotional pain of losing Mia, and the hours he had spent at the police station finally caught up with him. His body felt heavy, his cheeks were still slightly swollen from the slaps Mia had given him, and his mind was so tired that he no longer cared where he was going. When he finally looked around, he realized that he had wandered into a quiet public park that was almost completely empty at this hour. He checked the time on his phone and saw that it was already past midnight before walking over to one of the benches and sitting down. He leaned back and closed his eyes, hoping that the silence would help him forget everything that had happened.Unfortunately, closing his eyes only made the memories come back mor

Chapter 2
Micheal’s chest wouldn’t loosen the whole way to the Bell Crest Hotel. Kept telling himself there had to be another reason, but that picture of Mia kissing David stuck in his head like glue. He loved her. Really loved her. She said yes to being his girlfriend so he thought she felt the same. Never expected her to be perfect. Never cared that her family had money. Just wanted her to take him as he was. Now he couldn’t figure out how the same girl he’d spent six months chasing could stand up in front of everyone and say yes to another guy while she was still with him.He just needed to hear it from her.Almost half an hour to get there. The hotel looked ridiculous. Like it belonged on a different planet. Even from outside it screamed money. Standing there in his regular clothes with the old backpack, he felt stupid. Never even imagined people just casually hung out in a place like this. After the prices people were talking about in the livestream, it hit him even harder how different th
Chapter 1
Micheal walked out of the phone shop around 9:30. He had a new iPhone 17 Pro in his hand. It cost almost $2500.. The thing cost him almost $2,500. Almost. That was everything he had. For him that was everything. Six months of extra shifts at the bar after class, and three days ago he’d sold the motorcycle—the only thing he’d ever owned that was worth anything. He didn’t regret it.Mia had mentioned once, almost offhand, that she’d love an iPhone 17 Pro for her twentieth birthday. She never asked him to get it. He decided anyway.Thinking about her still made him smile, even now.Micheal had never had an easy life. He didn’t know his real parents. An old woman raised him like he was hers, and when she died the year he turned eighteen he was alone. He got into Quinton University on pure stubborn work and kept himself there with whatever part-time jobs he could find. He was poor. He knew that. He knew he was poor. He just never made a fuss about it. Figured if he kept grinding, things wo
