The fat manager sat behind his big desk and looked at Williams and Laura with a cold smile. Two guards stood near the door. The room felt small and heavy.

“Three days are finished,” the manager said. “The money for the food is still not paid. Now I will decide what happens to both of you.”

Laura’s hands shook. She looked at the floor and said nothing. Williams stood straight and met the manager’s eyes.

“I will pay the fifty thousand dollars right now,” Williams said.

The manager laughed. “You? With what money? You came here in dirty clothes and ate like a beggar. Do you think I believe you?”

Williams took out his bank card and placed it on the desk. “Check the account.”

The manager’s smile became smaller. He picked up the phone and called the bank. After a short talk his face changed. He looked at the card again, then at Williams.

“How does a man like you have so much money?” he asked in a low voice.

“That is not your business,” Williams said. “Transfer the fifty thousand dollars for the meal. Do it now.”

The manager’s eyes turned dark with anger, but he had no choice. He made the transfer. When it was finished, he threw the card back at Williams.

“The money is paid,” he said. “But that does not mean everything is over. Laura still broke the rules by letting you in without a membership card. She must be punished.”

Laura’s face went white. “I only wanted to help someone who looked hungry…”

The manager raised his hand. “Quiet. You have refused me many times before. Today you will learn what happens when you say no to me.”

He stood up and walked around the desk. The two guards moved closer. Laura stepped back until her back touched the wall.

Williams moved between them.

“She has nothing to do with this anymore,” he said. “The money is paid. Let her go.”

The manager stared at him. “You think you can protect her? This is my restaurant. I make the rules here.”

Williams did not move. His voice stayed calm. “If you touch her, I will make sure every person in this city knows what kind of man you are. I have money now. Money can buy many things, including lawyers and newspapers.”

The manager’s face turned red. For a long moment no one spoke. Then he forced a laugh.

“You have courage, boy. But courage without power is useless.” He waved his hand at the guards. “Get them out of my office. Laura, you are fired. Collect your things and never come back.”

Laura’s eyes filled with tears, but she did not cry. She walked out of the office with her head down. Williams followed her.

Outside the office, Vera stood in the hallway with a mean smile. “I told you fair competition was a joke, Laura. Now you have nothing.”

Laura did not answer. She went to the small staff room, packed her few things into a plastic bag, and walked toward the back door. Williams caught up with her in the alley behind the restaurant.

“Laura,” he called.

She stopped but did not turn around. “What do you want? Because of you I lost my job. My family needs that money.”

Williams took a deep breath. He could not tell her about the system, but he could still help.

“How much do you need each month for your family?” he asked.

Laura finally turned. Her eyes were red. “Why do you care?”

“Just answer.”

She was quiet for a while. “Three thousand dollars. For medicine, food, and school.”

Williams took out his bank card and a small piece of paper. He wrote a number on it and gave both to her.

“This card has enough money for one year,” he said. “Use it for your family. When the year is over, we can talk again.”

Laura stared at the card. “I cannot take this.”

“You can,” Williams said. “You were kind to me when no one else was. You shared your food. You tried to help me rest. This is only fair.”

Laura’s hands shook as she held the card. Tears finally fell down her face. “Why are you doing this?”

Williams looked at the dark alley and the busy street beyond it. “Because I know what it feels like when no one helps you.”

Laura wiped her eyes and gave a small nod. “Thank you… Williams.”

She walked away with the plastic bag and the bank card. Williams watched her until she turned the corner.

The system spoke in his mind for the first time since the quest ended.

[Quest reward: 5 QR points and 200,000 dollars have been added to the host’s account.]

Williams checked the new total. He now had more money and six QR points. Still not enough for the skills in the store, but better than before.

He walked out of the alley and onto the main street. The night air was cool. He had finished the second quest. He had helped Laura. But the fat manager was still in the restaurant, and men like him never forgot a loss.

Williams put his hands in his pockets and kept walking. He did not know where he would sleep tonight, but for the first time he was not afraid of tomorrow.

Somewhere in the city, his cousin and uncle still lived in the big family house. They still believed he was nothing.

Williams looked up at the dark sky and spoke in a low voice.

“System, when is the next quest?”

The answer came quickly.

[Soon. The host should stay ready.]

Williams nodded once and disappeared into the night crowd.
