Chapter 1

The grand interior of the living room at the Fairfax mansion exuded an air of elegance and sophistication. Adorned with ornate chandeliers and exquisite antique furniture, it reflected the opulence and refined taste of the Fairfax family. Sunlight filtered through the tall, arched windows, casting a warm glow on the Persian rug that sprawled across the polished hardwood floor.

Mrs Fairfax exuded an air of authority, her demeanor poised and commanding.

Logan took a deep breath, steeling himself for the difficult conversation ahead. With each step he took across the room, the weight of his foster mother's medical expenses pressed heavily on his shoulders.

As he entered the living room, Logan's eyes fell upon Mrs Fairfax, sitting regally in an armchair near the crackling fireplace.

Logan's face shows that he was heavy with worry and concern, he had come to seek assistance from his grandmother-in-law, Mrs Fairfax. Logan's foster mother's life hung in the balance, with a hefty hospital bill adding to his distress.

With his heart pounding, Logan mustered up the courage to approach Mrs Fairfax, hoping she would be willing to lend him the substantial sum of $900,000. "Grandma, I want to ask for a favour from you." His words mean't nothing to Mrs Fairfax, she pretended not to hear him. Logan knew she was all ears.

"He continued, grandma, my foster mother's life is a stake and I need money for her hospital bill I would love if you to borrow me money." Logan said hoping she should at least day something, but no worf came out of his mouth. For more than ten minutes Logan stood waiting for her reply.

Just then he realised how his wife Maya had warned him earlier not to ever approach her grandmother for any favour at all. 'grandma would never pay you no attention.' it kept ringing in his ears as he stride out if the living room. Mrs Fairfax laughed coldly as she saw Logan leaving.

"You have the nerves to come ask me for favour, when would you start to pay back? When you don't even have a day job." Mrs Fairfax muttered with a hint of disdain on her face.

Before she could complete her sentence Logan was already outside the mansion, he was set to go look for someone to lend him the money. It wasn't long his phone beeped, it was a text message, the sender name was typed in bold mother in-law.

The message reads:

'Meet me at uptown cafe, lets discuss about the money you want me to lend you. Don't keep me waiting, I have important things to do unlike you jobless graduate.

Rosalind, Maya's mother saw Logan requesting for money from Mrs Fairfax and she knew fully well that there was no way her Mrs Fairfax will agree to lend someone like Logan some money. She took the opportunity to do what has been on her mind for long.

'Okay I will be there.'

Logan replied immediately without thinking twice. He however began wondering why and what transpired that his mother in-law has agreed to lend him money.

Logan at once stood and walked out of the gate. When he left the mansion he had no idea where he was going but now he has direction.

Logan contact was saved as: useless son-in-law on Rosalind's phone. It was typed in bold.

Juliana, Logan's foster mother became sick and she needs intensive medical care but the hospital that admitted her is demanding a huge sum of 900 thousand dollars to commence treatment.

Logan couldn't afford to lose her. For all these years Juliana have been his backbone, ever since he lost his mother. She toiled so heard to provide everything he needed. Juliana worked at least three jobs in other to see him through university.

Logan would do anything to provide the money for his mother's treatment even if it means being humiliated by his mother in-law, Mrs Rosalind Fairfax.

Soon he arrived at the cafe, Rosalind began raining insults on him. "How dare you keep me waiting? And I warned you against it but as a good for nothing person you didn't hid to it."

"I invited you to a very nice cafe but you didn't have the decency to at least put on a neat clothes or even comb you hair. You are just a good for nothing human." Rosalind cursed.

"I am sorry mother." Logan said apologetically, at this point he would do just anything to get the money he needs for the surgery.

"Don't you ever call me mother again! I am not your mother, I can't give birth to a fool like yourself." Rosalind sounded the warning, her voice accentuated anger.

"I am sorry for upsetting you." Logan said apologetically once again, but on a normal day he will still add mother in-law at the end of his apologies but in other for her to lend him the money, he behaved himself.

As they sat on the chair Rosalind couldn't stop but feel disgusted at Logan's appearance, he wore a worn out clothe and his hair was unkept.

"When will you stop disgracing my family!? Enough of this nonsense. Here!" She stretched her hand and handed him a paper.

"It's a divorce paper, mother! who is it for?" Logan asked, a hint of confusion flashed through his mind.

"My daughter won't be happy with you. She now has a wealthy suitor. Bardot knights, the heir to the knight's family. Bardot has come asking my daughters hand in marriage, and am certain that it will be the best choice for Maya."

Logan was disappointed at what Rosalind is trying to do, he was shocked into silence.

"So I am asking you nicely, Divorce my daughter and I will lend you the exact money for your mother's hospital bill." Rosalind said.

As Logan processed Rosalind's demand, he became very annoyed. "No! I wouldn't do that, I love my wife and she love me too, I am sorry that wouldn't happen." "I can never sell my wife for money, she is so dear to me."

Come on mother! Maya is not a commodity, you don't have to sell her off like that, I wouldn't sell her not even to you her mother not to talk of some rich guy from nowhere.

"Some rich guy from nowhere? Logan, did I just hear you say a rich guy from nowhere? Bardot knights has a name unlike you, a dog from the trash. Since your graduation from the university what have you achieved? You are the guy from nowhere and my daughter deserves better." Rosalind screamed curses on Logan attracting other peoples attention to them.

Logan graduated from the university with first class he studied mathematics and statistics. After his graduation Mr Fairfax Employed him and later had him marry his granddaughter Maya, Rosalind's daughter.

He became a live-in son-in-law, Mr Fairfax Married Maya to Logan because he appointed her as his replacement. Mr Fairfax saw potentials in Logan so he found it reasonable to do so. Logan is capable of helping Maya run the company when she finally replaced him.

Unfortunately after Mr Fairfax's passing, things turned around. Logan was no longer allowed to work in Cordial Enterprises, he was not also allowed to work elsewhere if only he wants to stay married to Maya.

Apparently he doesn't have proper job except running errands in the Fairfax mansion, the only way he gets money is only if Maya gives him.

Logan rose up in anger not minding many eyes fixed on him. "Mother in-law, with all due respect, I would never sell my beloved wife to...." Just then, his phone began ringing interrupting his statement.

He pressed the answer button and placed the phone on his right ear.

"Hello, am I speaking to Logan?

Logan nervously interrupted the person at the other end. "Yes, yes you are."

The caller continued. "You need to come to the hospital right away, your mother's condition has worsened, and we need to do something, else she will die."

As Logan heard what the caller said, his heart began beating so fast and loud so that even Rosalind could hear it.
