Chapter 9: Message From the Dead

The silver pendant hovered above Kael's trembling hand.

Its petals continued unfolding until they formed a delicate circle around the black crystal at its center. Violet light spilled into the darkness, bathing the campsite in an eerie glow.

Neither Kael nor Darius dared move.

Then, with a soft chime, the crystal cracked.

Not in destruction.

In revelation.

A tiny sphere of light floated out of the pendant and rose into the air.

"What..." Kael whispered.

The sphere expanded, twisting into countless glowing threads. Before their eyes, the threads wove themselves into the shape of two people.

A man.

A woman.

Their forms shimmered like moonlight reflected on water, transparent yet unmistakably real.

Kael's breath caught in his throat.

The woman had long raven-black hair and gentle eyes filled with warmth. The man stood tall beside her, his shoulders broad, his expression calm but resolute.

Without knowing why...

Kael recognized them instantly.

His knees gave way.

"...Mother?"

The woman's smile trembled.

"My little Kael."

Tears welled in his eyes.

"Father..."

The man nodded solemnly.

"If you are seeing this message," he said, "then the seal has finally recognized you."

Kael reached toward them instinctively, but his fingers passed through the light.

"No..."

His voice broke.

"Please..."

The woman smiled sadly.

"This is only a memory we left behind."

"We cannot hear you."

Her words shattered the fragile hope in his heart.

Darius quietly stepped back, realizing this moment belonged to Kael alone.

The man continued.

"My name is Rowan Ashryn."

"And I am Elara Ashryn," the woman added.

"If fate has led you here, then we have already failed."

Kael clenched his fists.

"Failed?"

Rowan's expression hardened.

"Our enemies found us before we could prepare you."

"You were only an infant."

"We had no choice."

Elara stepped closer.

"Kael... listen carefully."

"You must remember every word."

Her gentle expression was replaced by unmistakable urgency.

"The world you know is built upon lies."

Kael's heartbeat quickened.

"The history taught by the kingdoms..."

"...is false."

Darius's eyes narrowed.

He leaned closer.

Rowan continued.

"They will call the Shadow Monarch a tyrant."

"They will tell stories of darkness consuming the world."

"They will claim he sought to destroy humanity."

He shook his head.

"They are lying."

Kael's breath hitched.

"The Shadow Monarch..."

"The Shadow Monarch gave everything to save this world."

The words echoed through the silent forest.

"The ancient war was not fought for power."

"It was fought for survival."

Elara placed a glowing hand over her heart.

"When the Void threatened to consume all life..."

"...the Shadow Monarch stood alone."

"He sealed away an evil that should never awaken again."

Kael struggled to absorb every revelation.

Everything he had heard since childhood...

Every story...

Could it all have been false?

Rowan's gaze became sharp.

"And that is why the truth had to disappear."

"The kingdoms feared the Shadow Monarch's bloodline."

"They feared anyone capable of inheriting his power."

"They hunted every descendant."

"They erased every record."

"They murdered everyone who remembered."

Kael felt cold.

"They hunted..."

"...our family?"

Rowan nodded.

"We spent years hiding you."

"Moving from place to place."

"Until we believed Ashcroft would be safe."

His voice grew heavy.

"We were wrong."

Elara's eyes glistened with sorrow.

"If you survived..."

"...then we did not."

Kael lowered his head.

Tears fell freely onto the forest floor.

"I'm sorry..."

"I'm so sorry..."

Though they couldn't hear him, the words escaped anyway.

"I couldn't save you..."

The woman smiled through her sadness.

"You never needed to."

"You only needed to live."

Her voice softened.

"Promise us something."

"Never surrender your kindness."

"The shadows will tempt you."

"They feed upon hatred."

"They whisper."

"They promise power."

"But your heart..."

"...must remain your own."

Kael remembered the ancient voice that had spoken inside his mind during the execution.

"My heir..."

A chill ran down his spine.

Rowan's expression became deadly serious.

"There is one final warning."

"If anyone claims to serve the Crown..."

"Trust no one."

Kael looked up sharply.

"What?"

"The Crown is no longer what it once was."

"There are those within the royal court who smile while poisoning kingdoms."

"They wear noble titles."

"They command armies."

"But they serve another master."

Darius's jaw tightened.

The words confirmed suspicions he had buried years ago.

Elara's image flickered.

"Our time is ending."

Kael desperately stepped forward.

"No!"

"So many questions!"

"Please don't leave!"

Rowan smiled faintly.

"You'll find the answers."

"When the time comes..."

"...seek the First Shrine."

"The path will reveal itself."

The glowing figures began dissolving into countless motes of light.

"Mother!"

"Father!"

Elara's final words drifted through the air like a gentle breeze.

"We love you..."

"Always."

The light vanished.

The forest fell silent once more.

Only the opened pendant remained, slowly descending into Kael's shaking hands.

He stared at it, unable to speak.

The only proof his parents had ever existed...

Had just spoken to him.

Darius finally broke the silence.

"The First Shrine..."

"I've heard that name before."

Before he could continue—

A twig snapped somewhere beyond the campsite.

Both men instantly looked toward the darkness.

Nothing moved.

Yet neither believed they were alone.

High above them, hidden among the thick branches of an ancient oak, a cloaked figure remained perfectly still.

A faint smile curved beneath the hood.

"So..."

The stranger's whisper was barely audible.

"The Ashryn message survived."

The figure silently disappeared into the darkness...

Leaving behind the unsettling certainty that someone had heard every single word.
