Chapter 1: The Corpse Beneath the Ruins
Zephyr woke up in the dark with a broken leg and three dead men around him. Stone pressed on his chest. His left shin bent the wrong way. Somewhere above him, boots scraped across the rubble. "Seal the north shaft," a soldier called. "Leave the east one open. Anything alive will crawl toward air, and we'll hear it." Zephyr stayed still and remembered. Three days ago, a man named Hollis Brandt had hired him for forty silver. Zephyr was a scavenger who could read ruins, and Brandt needed someone to tell him which tunnels were safe. Forty silver meant two months of medicine for Zephyr's younger brother, Rowan, who was sick and getting worse. Zephyr took the job. Today, Zephyr had found a hidden room behind a false wall. It was round, covered in carved symbols, and completely empty. Brandt had looked at the symbols and said, "Everyone out. We were never here." One of the workers, Odo, read the carvings out loud and laughed. "It's a grave marker. It says something's still in there." Brandt put a sword through his stomach. Another worker, Pell, ran for the exit. A crossbow bolt hit him in the throat. Zephyr ran too. He almost reached the stairs. Then a hand grabbed his shoulder, and a familiar voice said, "Easy, Zeph." It was Darius Voss, his oldest friend and former partner. Darius wouldn't meet his eyes. "They have my sister," Darius said. "I'm sorry." Then something hit the back of Zephyr's head, and everything went black. Now he was here. Brandt's men had collapsed the ceiling to bury the evidence, and the evidence included him. Zephyr counted the bodies around him. Pell. Odo. A water carrier named Tamsin, who had no wounds at all. She had just been standing in the wrong place when the roof came down. He had maybe ten minutes before the soldiers sealed every exit. He rolled onto his stomach. The pain was so bad that his vision went white. He waited until it faded, then looked for a way out. Every gap in the rubble had light coming through it. Light meant soldiers. Only one hole stayed dark, a narrow drainage pipe along the floor. He crawled in. The pipe sloped downward. Zephyr read the stones as he went, out of habit. This one would hold. This one wouldn't. This one was warm. He stopped. Warm stone, in a ruin that hadn't seen sunlight in a thousand years. And it was humming. "Don't follow the weird noise," he muttered. He followed it. The pipe opened into a small round chamber. Glowing amber symbols covered the walls. The floor was clean, with no dust at all. In the middle, on a stone pedestal, sat a black crown. Half of it was broken off. Zephyr knew better than to touch it. A clean room meant a trap. Nobody leaves something valuable lying around for a thousand years without protecting it. But the soldiers were sealing the exits. His leg was broken. Rowan had two days of medicine left. "Fine," he said. "Kill me. At least it's quick." He put his hand on the crown. It turned soft like warm wax and slid up his arm. It sank into his chest and settled behind his ribs. It didn't hurt, and that scared him more than pain would have. Glowing words appeared in the air in front of his eyes. [Primordial System bound.] [Anomaly detected: You were never meant to exist.] "What does that mean?" Zephyr whispered. More text appeared. [Name: Zephyr Kaelith] [Physical Strength: 7] [Soul Integrity: 63%] [Unique Trait: Primordial Adaptation] [Unidentified Authority: Sealed] That was all. No explanation. No instructions. "You say I shouldn't exist, then tell me how hard I can lift?" The walls shook. A crack split the ceiling, and dust poured down. The amber light flickered. The crown had been holding the chamber together, and now it was gone. Zephyr looked around fast. The pipe behind him was already filling with rubble. But on the far wall, the symbols spiraled around a flat stone disc the size of a dinner plate. He recognized it. A counterweight door. Pull the disc, and a passage opens. But a heavy block drops on whoever is standing in front of it. A chunk of ceiling hit the floor beside him. He dragged himself across the room, broken leg trailing behind him. He grabbed the disc with both hands. Pull it, then roll left. The notches point right. He pulled. Something huge began moving inside the wall. Zephyr threw himself sideways, and a black stone slab slammed down exactly where he had been. Behind it, the wall had opened onto a dark passage with fresh air blowing through. He crawled. The passage climbed upward while the chamber collapsed behind him. Hot dust rolled past. Above him, the soldiers started shouting. "Did you feel that?" "Get the captain!" Good, Zephyr thought. Keep looking at the wrong place. The passage ended at a rusted grate. He slammed his shoulder into it twice, and it fell open. He tumbled out into a gully behind the ruin's east wall. The sky was turning purple. The soldiers were on the other side of the wall, arguing. Nobody saw him. He found a broken tent pole and tied his leg to it with a strip of his shirt. It took two tries, and he nearly passed out both times. When he finished, he looked at his chest. No wound. No mark. Just a cold weight behind his ribs that wasn't there before. You were never meant to exist. "Yeah," he said quietly. "I've heard that before." He stood up using the pole. The first step almost dropped him. The second was easier. He had been carrying pain his whole life. He understood one thing now. Brandt hadn't hired a scavenger to find treasure. He had hired one to find a hidden door, then killed everyone who saw it. Brandt would count the bodies and realize one was missing. Zephyr had to get to Rowan before anyone else did. It took four hours to reach the Ash District. He stayed in back alleys and drainage tunnels, and twice he heard horses and pressed himself against a wall until they passed. At his building, he stopped on the third stair. He always tied a single hair across his door frame, low, at knee height. If it was gone, someone had been inside. The lock was broken. The hair was gone. "Rowan?" No answer. He pushed the door open with the pole. The room was destroyed. The cot was flipped. Food and broken jars covered the floor. His clay pot of savings lay in pieces, and the silver was gone. Rowan's medicine was gone too. The brown bottles he had left on the windowsill that morning, all of them. And Rowan was gone. Zephyr's mind went blank, like a wheel hitting a rock. Then he saw the wall. Someone had written on it in charcoal. BRING US THE RELIC, OR YOUR BROTHER DIES. The cold weight behind his ribs stirred. [Soul Integrity: 63%] The text floated in front of him, calm and useless. It didn't say where Rowan was. It didn't say who had taken him. Zephyr read the message again. They knew he had survived. They knew he had the relic. He had only touched it a few hours ago, and they already knew. Someone had been watching that chamber. Or someone had told them. Darius. His hand closed into a fist. But the message told him something else too. Whoever wrote it wanted the relic alive and unharmed, which meant they wanted something from him. A man who is wanted can bargain. Zephyr had spent his whole life being worth nothing to anyone. Now, for the first time, he was worth killing for. And he was going to use that.Latest Chapter

Instead he felt watched.A second card arrived at dawn. This one was white, edged in silver, and stamped with a sunburst.*High Inquisitor Seraphine Vale requests your presence at the Sanctum of the First Light. Come alone. You will not be harmed.*"Don't go," Mira said immediately."If I refuse, they send soldiers instead of a card.""If you go, you walk into the one building in Nethralis built to hold people like you.""I know." Zephyr folded the card. "But she knows something about my mother. I can feel it."Mira didn't argue. She just handed him a small clay vial. "Salt water. If they give you anything to drink, dip a finger in first. Some Church wine carri

Chapter 8: The Scavenger's DuelThe challenge arrived on a gold-edged card, delivered by a smiling clerk in front of forty witnesses.*Lord Cassian Draven invites Zephyr Kaelith to a sanctioned duel at the Ember Pit, tomorrow at noon. Should he win, all charges are dropped, his scavenging license is restored, and his name is cleared. Should he refuse, the city guard will be told where he sleeps.*Zephyr read it twice. "He knows where we're hiding.""He's telling you he knows," Mira said. "It's a leash.""Who's the opponent?"The clerk's smile widened. "Darius Voss."Zephyr's hand closed around the card until it crumpled.Dessa swore. "Voss is the best blade in the Ash District. He's won nineteen pit fights.""He's also the one who left me to die," Zephyr said.He turned back to the clerk. "I want one more thing. Wick, the boy with Blackroot poisoning. If I win, Cassian gives him the cure."The clerk blinked. "Lord Cassian said you might ask. He agrees."That scared Zephyr more than a

Chapter 7: A Name in the AshesZephyr didn't open the letter at the Customs House. He carried it three miles through back alleys to the old tannery, where Mira was waiting with Dessa's crew and the wagons."It's from my mother," he said, and put it on a table. "She died when I was six."Mira looked at the wax. "That seal is cracked.""I know."He reached for it. The moment his fingers touched the wax, the cold weight in his chest lurched, and the System flashed on in front of his eyes.**[Relic detected: Memory Seal (Damaged).]****[Compatibility: 91%.]****[Warning: Forced activation will destroy contents.]**Zephyr froze. "It says I can open it. But not by force.""What says?" Mira asked."The System." He waved a hand at the empty air. "It reads relics if I touch them. It doesn't tell me how to open them.""Then how do you open it?""I don't know yet."He sat down, put both hands around the seal, and thought about the Ward. That was the only technique he had. A Ward pushed energy ou

Chapter 6: The Man Who Bought the CityThe boy's name was Wick, and he was dying.Mira got them into a safe cellar under the bookbinder's shop. The old man, Tobin, took one look at Wick's neck and swore. "Blackroot. They put it in his water. It spreads until the heart stops.""Can you stop it?" Zephyr asked."Slow it. Salt, hot water, and your brother's fever tonic, if you can spare it." Tobin met his eyes. "It's a bad trade."Zephyr gave up half a bottle. Rowan's fever had dropped, and he was asleep on a cot with color in his face for the first time in weeks. Wick's black veins stopped climbing. They didn't recede."Three days," Tobin said. "Then he needs a real cure, and only Cassian's people have it."Zephyr stared at the wall. He had saved one child and doomed another, and Cassian had done both with a single bucket of water."I'm done running," he said.Mira looked up from her papers. "Good. What are you going to do?""Hit his business."---Everything Cassian owned ran on one thi

Chapter 5: The First Blood DebtZephyr found Rowan by following the medicine. The Quiet Buyer's contact had sold Cassian's men a crate of fever tonic two days ago, delivered to a warehouse at Dock Nine. Nobody needed that much tonic for guards. They needed it for a sick child."It's a trap," Mira said. They were crouched on a rooftop across the canal, watching the building. "Two guards at the front. Four on the roof. Those are trained fighters, not city watch.""I know.""Then wait until we have a plan.""Rowan has a day left." Zephyr checked the six brown bottles in his jacket. "I have a plan. It's just not a good one."Mira stared at him. "How bad?""The loading tunnel. Every dock warehouse has one for hauling cargo from the canal. They never guard it because nobody thinks scavengers fit through it.""Can you fit through it?""I've fit through worse."She pulled a small cloth bundle from her satchel and pressed it into his hand. Lockpicks. "Scream if you need me. I'll pretend I didn

"You translated for the Marrow crew last spring. They said you could read anything.""They also said I was a fraud. Go away.""I have a mark on my chest that a man says hasn't been seen in three hundred years."The knife stayed where it was. But her eyes dropped to his shirt, then back to his face."Come in," she said. "Fast."Her room was a cramped attic above a bookbinder, stacked with papers up to the ceiling. Mira was about twenty-five, thin, with ink on her sleeves and the tired look of someone who hadn't slept properly in years. She locked the door, pulled the curtains, and pointed at a stool."Show me."Zephyr pulled his shirt open. The black crown mark sat over his heart, sharp as a brand. Mira stared at it for a long time. Her face went slowly pale."Wh
