Ambush on the Lower Deck

The heavy iron door at the end of the narrow corridor slammed shut with a deafening metallic bang, the automatic magnetic lock engaging before anyone in the room could react.

Captain Miller swung his shotgun toward Mr. Chen, but the two guards behind Chen were faster. They raised their suppressed submachine guns, the blue lasers on their barrels painting red dots across Miller's chest and Caleb's forehead.

"Lower the weapon, Captain," Chen said quietly, taking a silver cigarette case from his pocket and snapping it open with one hand. "The Rotterdam Star is three miles out from the Genoa docks, moving at eighteen knots. The ship's security detail has already been replaced by my team. Nobody is coming down these stairs to help you."

Evelyn stood in front of Chloe, her face pale as she stared at the scar running down Chen's jawline. "Your father was Han Chen. He was the chief clearing director for the Asian markets before Richard closed the Zurich node."

"My father was a visionary," Chen corrected, lighting a cigarette with a small brass lighter. "He built the secondary routing network that allowed the Consortium to operate across three continents without triggering regulatory flags. Your husband betrayed him, Evelyn. He locked my father inside the vault during the purge twenty years ago."

"Your father tried to execute a forced transfer of three billion dollars from private pension funds!" Evelyn countered, her voice trembling with anger. "Richard didn't kill him. He locked the vault to prevent the transfer, and Han chose to trigger the self-destruct protocol rather than face trial!"

Chen exhaled a thin stream of smoke, his eyes dropping to the copper key sitting on the small folding table between them. "History is written by the survivors, Mrs. Thorne. And tonight, your family's line ends on this cargo deck."

Caleb stepped forward, placing his body between Chen's guards and his sister. His injured left shoulder throbbed with a dull, sickening heat, but his posture remained rigid, his right hand resting inside his coat pocket.

"Victoria Vance sent you here to collect the key because she knows she can't drill Vault 108 without triggering the physical security alarms," Caleb said, his voice flat and controlled. "She's using you to do her dirty work, Chen."

Chen chuckled softly, taking another drag from his cigarette. "Victoria is an arrogant child who thinks a computer screen gives her absolute power. She believes I am working for her. She doesn't realize that once I possess the copper key to Vault 108, Node 03 belongs to the Chen family, not the Vances."

"You want to take control of the Asian accounts for yourself," Chloe whispered from behind Caleb, her fingers secretly tapping against the back of her laptop casing.

"The Vances have been a disaster for the Consortium," Chen said, stepping toward the table and reaching out his left hand for the copper key. "Julian was greedy, Marcus was unstable, and Victoria is soft. The Asian board will restore order."

Before Chen's fingers could touch the copper key, a sudden, violent shudder ripped through the freighter's hull.

The massive steel deck plates beneath their feet bucked upward as a heavy metallic grinding sound echoed through the lower engine bay. The sudden impact threw the two guards off balance, their suppressed weapons discharging wildly into the overhead steel piping.

Hot steam erupted from a ruptured auxiliary valve above the doorway, filling the narrow corridor with a blinding white cloud.

"Now!" Caleb barked.

Miller didn't hesitate. He swung the butt of his heavy shotgun into the chest of the guard nearest the door, knocking the man backward into the steam cloud.

Caleb lunged across the folding table, his right hand grabbing the copper key and his father's silver watch off the surface before Chen could react.

Chen drew a sleek silver pistol from his suit jacket, but Evelyn slammed the heavy wooden folding table sideways into his knees, sending him crashing into the iron bunk frame.

"Chloe, main breaker!" Caleb shouted, grabbing his sister's arm as steam filled the room.

Chloe reached out in the dark mist, slamming her hand onto the emergency engine cutoff switch mounted on the bulkhead wall.

The deep, rhythmic thud of the ship's massive diesel engines cut out instantly.

The emergency lights flickered and died, plunging the lower deck into total, pitch-black darkness, illuminated only by the angry red glow of the steam pressure alarms.

Outside the companionway door, heavy boots pounded down the steel stairs as Maya's voice echoed through the ship's intercom system:

"Caleb! The starboard anchor is down! The ship is swinging hard into the harbor barrier!"

Chen swore in the dark, firing two wild shots toward the sound of Caleb's voice. The muzzle flashes lit up the steam-filled room for a split second, showing Chen scrambling toward the doorway.

Caleb didn't fire back. He grabbed his mother's arm and shoved Chloe through the open companionway hatch into the narrow utility corridor behind the engine housing.

"Up the ladder!" Caleb ordered, his voice cutting through the hiss of escaping steam.

They scrambled up the iron rungs of the vertical maintenance shaft, emerging onto the upper vehicle deck just as the Rotterdam Star slammed sideways into the stone breakwater outside Genoa harbor.

The violent collision sent a shower of sparks across the open vehicle bay. Two heavy cargo trucks snapped their tie-down chains, sliding across the slick steel floor and crashing into the side railing with a deafening crunch.

Maya stood near the open stern ramp, holding a heavy tactical flashlight in her left hand and her sidearm in her right. Her coat was soaked with rain, but her face was fierce and focused.

"I caught the pilot ladder on the starboard quarter while the ship was turning!" Maya shouted over the roar of the sea and the blaring alarm horns. "The harbor tugs are moving in, but Chen has six more contractors on the bridge!"

"Where is Captain Dirk?" Miller asked, coming up the shaft behind Caleb with his shotgun ready.

"Locked in the radio room," Maya said. "I cleared the lock on my way down. He's reversing the secondary ballast to keep the ship from listing."

Behind them, the heavy iron hatch to the maintenance shaft burst open.

Mr. Chen stepped out onto the vehicle deck, his charcoal suit stained with grease, blood trickling from a cut above his left eyebrow. His two remaining guards stepped up beside him, their weapons raised.

"You can't run, Caleb!" Chen shouted over the sound of the wind tearing through the open stern ramp. "The harbor is surrounded! My teams own every dock from here to Monaco!"

Caleb stood firm on the tilting steel deck, ten feet from the open drop into the black, churning waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

He held the copper key tight in his right hand.

"You're wrong about one thing, Chen," Caleb said, his voice carrying over the storm.

Chen narrowed his eyes, raising his silver pistol. "About what?"

"My father didn't kill your father in Zurich," Caleb said, meeting Chen's gaze with cold intensity. "Your father tried to double-cross Victor Vance twenty years ago. My father tried to save him, but Victor locked the vault from the outside."

Chen froze, his finger pausing on the trigger. "You're lying."

"Look at the master ledger," Caleb said, pointing at Chloe's laptop screen as she held it up in the dim light. "The purge command that locked the Zurich vault didn't originate from Richard Thorne's terminal. It originated from the Vance family account."

Chen glanced at the screen for a fraction of a second, confusion and doubt flickering across his sharp features.

That split second was all Caleb needed.

"Jump!" Caleb yelled.

Caleb grabbed Chloe and Evelyn, throwing his weight sideways over the stern railing into the dark, freezing waters of Genoa harbor below.

Miller and Maya plunged right behind them as Chen screamed in rage, his pistol firing uselessly into the empty night air above the churning sea.
