Chapter 1

THE ENGAGEMENT THAT WASN’T HIS

Dorian Vale felt the weight of every stare as soon as he stepped into the ballroom. It was pity, not surprise, not excitement. Just pity. He froze by the doorway, digging his fingers into the small velvet box in his pocket, the one he’d spent months planning for.

He’d pictured this night a hundred times. Celeste would smile as she walked toward him. Her father would look grumpy as usual. The Vales would pretend he’d always been family. Dorian would open the box, and Celeste would say yes. Simple. That’s how he wanted it.

He’d saved for the ring—no way was he spending Vale money. This was supposed to be his gift. But now, everyone watched him with the kind of expression reserved for bad news and broken dreams.

He scanned the room. There was Celeste, standing under the chandelier, shining in a silver dress. Tristan Vale stood beside her, one arm slung around her waist, looking like he owned the moment. A giant diamond sparkled on Celeste’s finger—way bigger than the one Dorian bought.

Dorian’s gut twisted.

“What’s going on?” His voice barely carried but the room went silent. Tristan turned, calm, almost smug.

“Dorian.”

Celeste glanced at Dorian, guilt flickering before she shut it away. Dorian stared.

“Celeste?”

No reply.

He stepped forward. “I thought tonight was our engagement dinner.”

Tristan laughed, and it cut right through Dorian. People looked away.

Dorian looked between Tristan and Celeste. “Why is he beside you?”

Celeste walked closer, steady, too composed.

“Dorian, we need to talk.”

He almost laughed. “We’re talking.”

“Not here.”

“So where?”

She hesitated, and then Tristan stepped in. “You’re making this difficult.”

Dorian shot back, “This doesn’t concern you.”

“It concerns me more than you think.” Tristan raised Celeste’s hand. The diamond caught the light. “We’re getting married.”

Dead silence.

Dorian stared at the ring, then at Celeste, then at Tristan. He felt lost.

“You’re getting married.” He barely whispered.

Celeste nodded. “To Tristan.”

“Yes.”

Dorian gripped the velvet box inside his pocket, the ring he’d picked out for her. Now Tristan had replaced him.

He looked at Celeste. “Did you know before tonight?”

She hesitated. Enough said.

“How long?”

“Dorian—”

“How long?”

Celeste’s voice dropped. “A few weeks.”

A few weeks. Dorian swallowed hard.

“And you still let me plan all this?”

“I didn’t know how to tell you.”

“You could’ve told me before I bought the ring.”

“I was afraid of hurting you.”

Dorian’s smile turned bitter. “You waited until your engagement party to avoid hurting me?”

“This isn’t my engagement party,” she said.

That hit harder than anything.

He stared. She looked away. Tristan grinned.

“I think you should accept reality, Dorian.”

His eyes hardened. “What reality?”

“That you and Celeste were never meant to be.”

The room felt too hot. Dorian had spent years living in Tristan’s shadow—the golden son, the heir, the one everyone expected. Dorian always thought some things—like love—were beyond blood and money. Guess not.

He took out the velvet box. The crowd watched him as he opened it—a delicate diamond ring. Celeste’s expression softened for a moment.

“Dorian…”

He closed the box. “You should’ve told me.”

“I know.”

“That’s all,” he said, turning away.

“Dorian,” Celeste called softly, her voice trembling. “I never wanted to humiliate you.”

He didn’t look back. “You didn’t. You just chose someone else.” Then he left.

He made it across the ballroom without glancing over his shoulder. When the doors closed behind him, he finally let himself breathe. His chest ached. His hand shook. He hated that. He hated that despite everything, he’d felt like he belonged with the Vales.

Dorian slipped down the private corridor toward the parking area. He needed air, distance, a way out before anyone saw the tears gathering in his eyes.

He was almost at the corridor when voices drifted from the study. His father, Edmund Vale. Dorian paused. The door was only half shut.

“…you should have told me before tonight.”

Another voice. Tristan. Dorian listened.

“I said we should have dealt with Dorian years ago.”

Edmund’s tone dropped. “You don’t understand.”

“I understand perfectly.” Tristan’s laugh was soft. “Did you really think he’d never find out who he is?”

Dorian’s heart stuttered. Who he is?

He pressed closer to the door.

“Keep your voice down,” Edmund urged.

“Why? He’s leaving.”

“He’s still my son.”

“No,” Tristan said, voice cold. “He’s not a Vale.”

Dorian went cold.

Something struck the desk inside. Edmund whispered, “You promised nobody would tell him.”

“And nobody would’ve, if he hadn’t started asking questions.”

Questions? What questions?

Now Dorian’s breathing felt shallow. He pressed himself to the wall.

Then Edmund let loose the sentence that shattered everything.

“We were paid to hide him, Tristan.”

That word—paid. Hide.

Who were they talking about?

Tristan’s reply was almost inaudible. “And now that he knows something’s wrong?”

Edmund went quiet.

Tristan whispered, “Then we should’ve killed him twenty years ago.”

Dorian’s heart hammered. He clapped his hand over his mouth. Everything felt unreal.

Twenty years ago. Killed him. Why? Who was he?

Dorian took a shaky step back. The floorboard creaked.

Inside, silence. Then Tristan said, “Did you hear that?”

Dorian bolted. The study door crashed open behind him.

“DORIAN!”

He didn’t stop. He tore through the corridor, pushed open the emergency exit, and ran into the freezing night.

Just get away. That was the only thought in his head.

He missed the black sedan parked across the street.

Headlights flared. The engine roared.

The car shot straight at him.
