Escape to the Deep

The icy waters of Genoa harbor hit Caleb like a wall of solid lead.

Cold salt water filled his mouth and eyes as the momentum of the drop dragged him fifteen feet below the dark surface. The shock of the freezing sea sent a sharp wave of agony straight through his injured shoulder, threatening to knock the air from his lungs.

Caleb kicked his legs hard, keeping his right arm hooked tight around Chloe’s waist. He pulled her upward through the black water until their heads broke the surface in the shadow of the massive stone breakwater.

Ten yards away, Evelyn and Captain Miller surfaced together near an iron ladder, while Maya cut through the swell toward them with smooth, practiced strokes.

Above them on the stern deck of the Rotterdam Star, flashlight beams swept across the churning water. Muffled gunshots echoed off the breakwater as Mr. Chen’s guards fired blindly into the dark sea.

"Keep your heads down!" Miller gasped, grabbing the iron ladder with one heavy hand and pulling Evelyn onto the lower concrete ledge.

Caleb shoved Chloe up onto the ledge first, then hauled himself out of the water. He collapsed against the wet concrete, gasping for breath, his left arm hanging uselessly at his side. Fresh blood mixed with salt water was soaking rapidly through his dark coat.

Chloe dropped to her knees beside him, her hands trembling as she wiped water from her eyes. "Caleb! Your shoulder!"

"It's fine," Caleb grunted, forcing himself to sit up against the stone wall. He reached into his inner jacket pocket.

The heavy copper key to Vault 108 was still there, along with his father's silver pocket watch. He pulled out the watch, checked the casing, and let out a long, ragged breath when he saw the glass face was intact.

"The laptop," Caleb said, looking at his sister.

Chloe reached behind her back, unzipping the heavy waterproof tactical bag Miller had provided before they left the train. Inside, the specialized rugged laptop was completely dry.

"The seal held," Chloe breathed, a faint note of relief in her voice.

Maya hauled herself onto the ledge, her sidearm held ready as she scanned the harbor mouth. "Chen’s ship is stuck against the outer barrier, but his men are launching a motor launch from the port side. We have five minutes before they clear the breakwater."

Miller pointed down the dark concrete ledge toward an unlit service tunnel built into the harbor wall. "That conduit leads straight to the private docks behind the naval shipyard. My contact has a thirty-foot twin-engine boat waiting at Pier 4."

"Can the boat make open water in this swell?" Evelyn asked, holding her wet coat close around her shoulders.

"It was built for coastal patrol," Miller said, picking up his waterproof duffel bag. "It can outrun anything Chen has in this harbor."

They didn't waste another second. They ran through the narrow stone conduit, the sound of blaring harbor alarms and shouting men fading behind them as they moved deeper into the naval shipyard zone.

Three minutes later, Miller kicked open a rusted iron access gate, stepping out onto the slippery wooden planks of Pier 4.

Moored at the end of the dock was a sleek, dark-gray aluminum vessel with twin outboards idling in the dark water.

Standing on the stern was Captain Dirk’s chief mate—a quiet, thick-set Dutch sailor who immediately threw them a mooring line as they approached.

"The port authority is locking down the harbor entrance, Miller!" the sailor shouted over the wind. "Two Italian coast guard cutters just left the main station!"

"Cast off!" Miller barked, helping Evelyn and Chloe over the gunwale.

Caleb stepped onto the deck, resting his back against the cabin bulkhead as the sailor threw off the lines and slammed the twin throttles forward.

The aluminum boat surged out of the slips, its bow rising as it cut through the choppy harbor water, shooting past the stone breakwater out into the open, pitch-black expanse of the Mediterranean Sea.

Behind them, the lights of Genoa grew smaller, flashing red and blue against the low storm clouds.

Inside the small, heated cabin, Chloe set her laptop on the chart table and flipped the screen open. The internal battery was at ninety percent.

"Chloe," Caleb said, walking into the cabin and bracing himself against the table as the boat bounced over a six-foot wave. "Can you trace Chen’s private communications from the freighter?"

"I don't need to trace him," Chloe said, pointing at a new data log loading onto her screen. "When Chen was standing on the vehicle deck, I set up a local Bluetooth sniffer that cloned his satellite phone's primary MAC address."

Evelyn leaned over the table, her eyes sharp. "What did you find?"

"Chen didn't just come to Genoa for the copper key," Chloe revealed, bringing up a series of encrypted text logs. "He received a direct order from Victoria Vance six hours ago. She gave him the exact coordinates for Vault 108 in Kowloon, but she didn't give him the master authorization sequence."

"She was using him as a battering ram," Caleb said. "She wanted Chen to take the risk of retrieving the key, then she planned to eliminate him in Hong Kong."

"Look at the secondary file," Chloe continued, tapping a key. "Victoria didn't stay in Hong Kong city center. She's established her temporary headquarters inside a fortified container vessel currently anchored in the deep-water berth at the Kowloon port extension."

Maya walked into the cabin, wiping salt spray from her face. "A floating server command center. Just like the Elysium in Marseilles."

"It's smarter than Marseilles," Evelyn warned. "Kowloon port is an autonomous economic zone. Swiss warrants and European court orders have no legal authority there. If Victoria consolidates the Consortium's remaining four hundred billion inside that vessel, she becomes completely untouchable."

Caleb pulled out the copper key, setting it on the chart table beside Chloe's laptop under the red cabin light.

"She needs Vault 108 to complete the transfer," Caleb said, his voice flat and steady. "And she knows Chen failed to get the key in Genoa."

"So she's going to accelerate the drilling operation," Miller said from the helm, his hands firm on the wooden wheel as he navigated through the heavy swell. "She won't wait for a key if she knows you're alive, Caleb."

"She can't drill it," Chloe said, a tight, cold smile appearing on her face. "I just tapped into the Egyptian data hub in Cairo. I've uploaded a fake hardware signature mimicking the copper key's optical pattern."

Caleb looked at his sister. "What does that do?"

"When Victoria's drill team touches the outer safe deposit box in Vault 108, the system will think an invalid key was inserted," Chloe explained. "It will trigger a permanent mechanical lockdown. The vault's internal steel teeth will weld shut. She won't be able to open that box with an industrial laser for at least seventy-two hours."

Evelyn looked at her daughter with a mixture of pride and quiet shock. "You bought us three days."

"Three days to reach Hong Kong," Maya said, looking out at the dark horizon ahead. "The flight routes from Europe are monitored by Chen's men, and the sea route takes two weeks."

Caleb reached into his coat and pulled out the black leather notebook his mother had given him. He flipped to the back cover, where a folded map of the old Middle Eastern trade routes was tucked into the pocket.

"We aren't flying, and we aren't taking a cargo freighter all the way around Africa," Caleb said, pointing his finger at a specific point on the map.

Miller glanced back from the helm. "Cairo?"

"Alexandria first," Caleb corrected. "We land at the private naval docks in Egypt, access the physical hub to solidify the vault lockdown, and take the private commercial air transport from the Red Sea hub straight into Kowloon."

"The Red Sea corridor is controlled by Helios Defense's southern division," Maya reminded him. "That's their home territory, Caleb."

Caleb picked up the copper key and slipped it back into his pocket, his eyes burning with an intense, unyielding focus.

"Good," Caleb said softly. "Then they won't expect us to walk through their front door."

Out in the deep Mediterranean, the patrol boat cut through the rising waves, its engines roaring into the dark, stormy night as it carried them toward Egypt.
