Breach on the Elysium

Heavy automatic fire splintered the oak doorframe of the command suite, sending sharp wood shards flying across the room.

Caleb pulled his mother behind the heavy steel server rack just as a volley of suppressed rounds tore through the leather armchairs and shattered the main terminal screen. Sparks showered over the carpet, filling the air with the smell of scorched wire.

"The purge is at sixty percent," Evelyn said, her voice strained as she pressed her back against the server casing, holding the glowing blue core module tightly against her coat. "If they breach the inner bulkhead before it hits one hundred, the core locks down and Marcus gets the decryption key."

Caleb checked his sidearm. Five rounds left in the magazine. His left shoulder burned with every breath, but he forced his grip steady on the weapon in his right hand.

"They're using flash grenades," Caleb warned. "Keep your head down."

A metallic canister bounced through the ruined doorway, rolling across the carpet. Caleb kicked a heavy steel footstool over the canister just as it detonated with a deafening pop and a blinding white flash.

The pressure wave rattled the server cabinets, but the steel stool absorbed the worst of the shrapnel.

Before the smoke could clear, two Helios mercenaries in dark tactical gear pushed through the doorway, their rifles raised to sweep the corners.

Caleb leaned around the server rack and fired twice.

The first shot caught the lead mercenary in the shoulder joint, twisting his body and throwing off his aim. The second round struck the second man's tactical vest, forcing him back into the corridor.

"Fall back to the server catwalk!" Caleb shouted to his mother, firing a third round to keep the doorway pinned.

Evelyn didn't hesitate. She scrambled up the narrow iron ladder leading to the upper maintenance catwalk, clutching the core module under her arm.

A heavy boot slammed against the outer steel frame, and Marcus Vance stepped through the ruined doorway into the smoking suite.

He didn't wear tactical gear. He wore a dark leather coat, his forehead still bearing the dark purple bruise from the airfield crash, his eyes fixed on Caleb with sharp, furious intensity. In his right hand, he held a heavy-caliber pistol fitted with an extended magazine.

"You're remarkably persistent, Caleb," Marcus said, his voice cutting through the hum of the cooling fans as two more armed mercenaries took position behind him. "You survived the harbor, you survived the airfield, and you even managed to ruin Arthur Sterling in London."

"Sterling was weak," Caleb said, stepping into the shadow of the central server pillar, keeping his gun trained on Marcus's chest. "He thought he was running the Consortium. He didn't realize Node 01 was controlled by someone who actually understood the architecture."

Marcus let out a short, cold laugh. "You mean your mother? The ghost who's been hiding on a research vessel for eight years?"

He looked up toward the iron catwalk where Evelyn was securing the core module into the secondary purge terminal.

"Evelyn Thorne built a nice cage," Marcus continued, taking a slow, deliberate step forward while his mercenaries raised their weapons to cover him. "But she forgot that cages have keys. My father helped found this syndicate, Caleb. The Vances don't take orders from an accountant's widow."

"Your father died trying to take this server," Caleb replied. "You're making the same mistake."

"My father didn't have fifty heavy contractors backing him," Marcus said. He gestured slightly with his left hand. "Kill him. Take the core."

Before the mercenaries could pull their triggers, a loud, metallic grinding sound echoed through the ship's lower hull.

The entire three-hundred-foot vessel lurched violently to the left as the deck tilted at a sharp fifteen-degree angle.

The sudden loss of balance threw the two mercenaries off their feet, their rifles discharging wildly into the ceiling as they tumbled against the shattered desk. Marcus grabbed the edge of a steel server cabinet to keep from falling, his pistol slipping from his fingers and clattering across the slanting floorboards.

"What is that?" Marcus snarled, struggling to regain his footing on the slick carpet.

Above the noise of the tilting hull, a high-pitched alarm shrieked through the ship's intercom system.

Warning: Port ballast tank breached. Water intake in progress.

Through the broken window of the suite, Caleb saw the dark outline of the dock.

Maya had driven the crossover SUV straight onto the quay, using the heavy front winch to pull the ship's primary sea-chest intake valve completely off its mounting plate from the pier side.

Chloe had executed the power kill.

"Caleb!" Maya's voice crackled through his earbud, sharp and urgent over the static. "The port intake is flooded! The ship is taking on water fast! You have ninety seconds before the lower deck clears the waterline!"

Caleb didn't waste a second. He lunged across the tilted floor, grabbing Marcus by the collar of his leather coat before the man could reach his fallen pistol.

Caleb slammed Marcus hard against the iron server rack, his right fist driving into Marcus's ribs. Marcus gasped for air, striking back with a wild hook that caught Caleb across the jaw, sending a sharp shock of pain through his injured shoulder.

Caleb stumbled back, but he didn't lose his footing. He hooked his leg behind Marcus's knee, sweeping his legs out and slamming him face-down onto the steel deck.

He pulled a pair of heavy nylon zip-cuffs from his coat pocket and bound Marcus's wrists tightly behind his back, locking him against the iron base of the server cabinet.

"You're sinking with the ship, Caleb!" Marcus spat, blood dripping from his lip onto the carpet as he struggled against the restraints.

"The server is purging, Marcus," Caleb said, looking up at the central monitor as the status bar hit one hundred percent.

The screen flashed bright green, followed by a final system notice:

Purge Complete. Node 01 Core Offline. Master Decryption Key Wiped.

Evelyn descended the iron ladder, holding the wiped blue core module in her hand. "The local network is dead, Caleb. The Consortium's European accounts are frozen permanently."

"We need to move!" Caleb said, grabbing his mother's arm as seawater began pouring under the command suite door from the flooded lower companionway.

They pushed through the ruined doorway, navigating the tilted, smoke-filled corridor as the mercenaries scrambled in panic toward the upper deck escape hatches.

They reached the main deck just as the Elysium's port rail dipped beneath the dark surface of the harbor water.

Maya was waiting near the gangway ladder, her sidearm drawn as she covered their exit. "The port authority tugboats are responding to the alarm! We have three minutes before French customs locks down the quay!"

Caleb helped his mother down the steep gangway onto the wet concrete pier. Chloe ran out from the salt shed, carrying her laptop rig, her eyes wide as she saw Evelyn step off the ship.

Chloe stopped dead in her tracks, her breath catching in her throat. "Mom...?"

Evelyn looked at her daughter, her eyes shining with tears in the flickering dock light. She took a step forward, but before she could speak, a low, heavy vibration rumbled through the concrete beneath their boots.

It wasn't the sinking ship.

Down the long, narrow access road leading into the port, four unlit black armored vans pulled through the broken security gate, their high-beam headlights suddenly flaring to life, blinding them against the dark water.

A voice amplified through a heavy loudspeaker echoed across the quiet harbor in French-accented English.

"Director Thorne. You will step away from the vehicle and drop the core module."

Maya raised her weapon, her face darkening as she backed toward the SUV. "That's not Helios Defense, Caleb. Look at the insignia on the van doors."

Caleb shielded his eyes against the blinding high beams.

Stamped on the side of the lead armored vehicle was a silver crest—a lion wrapped around an iron anchor.

The official seal of the French General Directorate for Internal Security.

"They aren't here to arrest us," Evelyn whispered, her voice dropping into cold dread. "The French intelligence division was the primary institutional backing for Node 02."

A tall man in a dark trench coat stepped out from the lead armored van, holding a secure satellite tablet in his gloved hand.

"Mr. Caleb Thorne," the official said calmly over the speaker. "Lord Sterling's arrest in London created a power vacancy in the European oversight committee. My superiors have decided that Node 01 will be transferred to our custody immediately."
