The blinding glare of four high-beam headlights pinned Caleb, Evelyn, Maya, and Chloe against the wet concrete pier.

Behind the lead armored van, six French intelligence agents in tactical trench coats stepped out, their silenced submachine guns held at low ready. The man in the dark coat walked toward them with measured steps, his eyes fixed on the blue core module Evelyn held in her left hand.

"Director Thorne," the man said in smooth, flawless English. "I am Inspector Laurent, Special Operations Division of the DGSI. You've caused quite a disruption in international financial oversight tonight."

Caleb stepped sideways, putting his body between Laurent's men and his mother. "The DGSI doesn't handle port customs inspections, Inspector. And they certainly don't show up four minutes after a vessel takes on water unless they were monitoring the ship's internal comms."

Laurent stopped ten feet away, a faint, cold smile touching his lips. "Mr. Thorne. Your reputation as an auditor precedes you. But you are mistaken about one detail. We weren't monitoring the Elysium. We were waiting for Arthur Sterling's network to collapse."

Maya didn't lower her sidearm. Her thumb rested lightly on the hammer. "You let Sterling draw us to London, and you let Marcus attack the ship. You wanted Node 01 wiped so you could step in and claim the core."

"Lord Sterling was a liability," Laurent replied without hesitation. "He believed politicians could manage shadow capital. The French division has always maintained that intelligence agencies provide far better security for international accounts."

He extended a gloved hand toward Evelyn. "The core module, Director. Hand it over, and you, your daughter, and your son will be escorted to a private airfield near Nice. Refuse, and you will be processed as illegal combatants operating an unregistered maritime intelligence server in French territorial waters."

Evelyn's fingers tightened around the blue drive casing. She looked at Caleb, a silent question in her eyes.

Caleb looked at the six agents standing in a wide semicircle, then down at the wet concrete floor of the pier.

The Elysium was settling deeper into the water behind them, its port rail completely submerged now. The heavy iron stern mooring line was stretched taut as steel wire, humming under immense tension as the three-hundred-foot hull pulled away from the quay.

"Chloe," Caleb said quietly, his voice barely audible over the sea wind. "Is the local harbor grid still linked to your laptop?"

"The dock transformer is running on an auxiliary loop," Chloe whispered back, her face pale but her hands steady behind his back. "I can trip the surge relay in three seconds."

"Do it on my mark," Caleb instructed.

He looked back at Laurent. "Inspector, you made a mistake coming here in person."

Laurent raised an eyebrow. "Is that a threat, Mr. Thorne? You are outnumbered, your shoulder is bleeding, and your ship is sinking."

"It's not a threat. It's an audit," Caleb said.

"Mark!" Caleb yelled.

Chloe slammed her thumb onto her laptop enter key.

A high-voltage surge detonated inside the dock transformer box fifty yards away. The single overhead sodium light exploded in a blinding shower of sparks, plunging the entire quay into pitch-black darkness.

"Down!" Maya shouted, grabbing Chloe by the coat collar and dragging her flat against the concrete as she fired three rapid shots toward the front tires of the lead armored van.

The heavy rubber exploded, sending the front end of the van slamming down onto its rim with a loud metallic crash.

Laurent's agents opened fire into the dark, but their muzzle flashes only revealed their own positions.

Caleb didn't draw his pistol. He lunged sideways in the darkness, reaching out with his right hand to grab the heavy iron release lever of the pier's mooring bollard.

With a hard, violent yank, he popped the safety latch holding the Elysium's main stern line.

The thick steel cable, held under thousands of pounds of pressure from the sinking ship, snapped free with a deafening sound like a cannon shot.

The severed steel line whipped across the concrete pier at knee height, smashing directly into the front grilles of the remaining three armored vehicles and taking out the legs of two DGSI agents who were advancing through the fog.

Metals screeched, glass shattered, and men shouted in panic as the heavy cable tore through the tactical line.

"To the crossover!" Caleb shouted, grabbing his mother's arm as Maya provided covering fire from behind a concrete barrier.

They sprinted through the smoke and darkness toward the salt shed where Maya had parked their rental SUV.

Laurent scrambled up from behind his ruined vehicle, his face covered in soot, and raised his sidearm toward Caleb's back. "Stop them!"

Before Laurent could pull the trigger, a loud air horn blared from the harbor channel.

A heavy, twin-engine port authority fireboat roared out of the fog, its high-power water cannons flaring to life as it swept the quay with thousands of gallons of pressurized seawater to combat the burning oil from the Elysium.

The massive wall of water hit the pier like a tidal wave, knocking Laurent and his remaining three agents off their feet and washing their weapons across the slippery concrete.

Maya opened the driver's door of the SUV, slamming the transmission into gear as Caleb, Evelyn, and Chloe scrambled into the back seats.

"Go!" Caleb barked.

Maya slammed her foot on the accelerator. The SUV's tires spun on the wet gravel before catching traction, shooting out of the salt shed and tearing down the narrow harbor access road toward the autoroute.

Behind them, the flashing lights of French customs cruisers and municipal police cars began pouring into the port entrance, completely blocking Laurent's team from organizing a pursuit.

Inside the SUV, the heavy hum of the engine was the only sound for several long miles as they merged onto the dark highway heading north toward the industrial district of Lyon.

Chloe sat in the middle seat, clutching the blue core module in her lap. She looked across at Evelyn, who was staring out the window at the passing countryside lights.

"Mom..." Chloe said, her voice small and hesitant. "Is it really you?"

Evelyn turned toward her daughter, her mask of executive calm finally breaking. Tears glinted in her eyes as she reached out and pulled Chloe into a tight, trembling embrace.

"I'm sorry, Chloe," Evelyn whispered, her voice choking up. "I'm so sorry I left you."

Caleb watched them from the front passenger seat, leaning his head back against the headrest. His body ached, his shoulder was numb, and the exhaustion of four days of constant combat was catching up to him. But his mind remained sharp, analyzing every piece of the board.

Maya kept her eyes on the highway ahead, her hands firm on the steering wheel. "Where to now, Caleb? The DGSI has our faces. Every airport and train station in France will be flagged by morning."

"We aren't leaving France yet," Caleb said quietly.

He reached down and picked up Chloe's laptop, opening the diagnostic screen that had mirrored the Elysium's final data output before the core purged.

A single line of encrypted text was still active on the display, running on a secondary satellite loop that hadn't been wiped.

"Look at this," Caleb said, pointing at the screen.

Maya glanced over. "What is it?"

"When Laurent's team breached the ship, they didn't just want Node 01," Caleb explained. "They were executing a synchronization protocol. Look at the destination ping."

Chloe wiped her eyes and looked at the screen, her technical focus instantly returning. She typed a quick command to trace the ping's origin.

"The signal wasn't sent to a government server in Paris," Chloe said, her brow furrowing. "It went to a private server node located in the Swiss Alps... registered under an offshore entity called Helios Management Group."

Caleb's eyes narrowed. "Helios. The same contractor Marcus Vance used."

"Marcus is locked inside a sinking ship in Port-de-Bouc," Maya said. "Who is running Helios now?"

Evelyn pulled back from the hug, looking at the screen with a sudden, icy stillness in her posture.

"Marcus wasn't the head of Helios," Evelyn said quietly, her voice cold. "Marcus was just the regional field commander. Helios Defense was founded thirty years ago by Victor Vance's old business partner."

Caleb looked at his mother. "Who?"

"Julian and Marcus's uncle," Evelyn revealed. "Dominic Vance. The man who actually controlled the Iron Consortium's private military arm while Arthur Sterling handled the politics."

Before Caleb could ask another question, Chloe's laptop speaker chimed.

A new file alert popped up on the display screen. It was an automated news broadcast feed from a local Swiss television station, live-streaming an emergency press conference in Geneva.

On the screen, a man in his early sixties with sharp, military features and cold grey eyes stood behind a podium surrounded by international journalists.

Below his image, the news banner read:

BREAKING: Dominic Vance, Chairman of Helios Global, announces full acquisition of Vanguard Capital assets and promises full cooperation with international regulators.

Dominic Vance looked directly into the news camera, a calm, professional smile on his face.

"We are deeply saddened by the recent corporate corruption uncovered within Vanguard Capital," Dominic said into the microphones. "As a major shareholder, Helios Global has taken immediate steps to secure all remaining accounts. We are offering a ten-million-dollar reward for the capture of the international fugitives responsible for these financial crimes: Caleb Thorne and Chloe Thorne."

Chloe gasped, her hand flying to her mouth as she stared at the screen. "He's blaming us for the entire syndicate..."

Caleb stared at Dominic Vance's face on the monitor, his fingers tightening around his father's silver pocket watch until his knuckles turned white.

"He wants us on the run so we can't present the sub-ledger to the international courts," Caleb said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, flat register.

Maya glanced at the fuel gauge on the dashboard, then back at the dark highway stretching ahead into the mountains. "He has ten million dollars on our heads and the backing of a private military firm. Where do we go, Caleb?"

Caleb closed the laptop screen with a firm snap.

"We go to Geneva," Caleb said.
