Heavy boots pounded against the concrete floor outside the vault as Victor Vance’s voice echoed through the intercom speakers.

"You really thought I died in Zurich twenty years ago, Evelyn?" Victor's voice carried a chilling, low rasp. "Your husband was clever, but he was always too soft. He thought a steel vault door and a fake death report would end the Consortium. He never understood that the system belongs to me."

Evelyn backed against the stainless-steel safe deposit boxes, her face pale under the harsh halogen lighting. "Victor... we saw the burning wreckage in '06. The Swiss police verified your DNA."

"A body double pulled from a local morgue costs very little when you own the regional coroner's office," Victor replied coldly over the comms. "My children played their roles well. Julian thought he was ambitious. Victoria thought she was brilliant. But they were always nothing more than public distractions to keep international regulators looking at Western markets while I built Node 04 in Shanghai."

Caleb didn't look up at the speaker. His eyes were fixed on the open metal box inside Vault 108.

He reached down with his right hand, ignoring the searing pain in his wounded shoulder, and picked up the sealed manila envelope left by his father. Below his father's handwriting was a small secondary seal—a red wax stamp bearing the symbol of the Shanghai Maritime Exchange.

"Caleb, get back!" Maya yelled from the shattered observation window.

Suppressed automatic fire chewed through the doorframe of the main vault corridor. Heavy rounds sparked off the steel walls as a squad of eight dark-armored contractors moved in tactical formation down the hallway, their assault rifles raised.

Maya fired three rapid rounds from behind a concrete pillar, dropping the lead contractor into the corridor, but the remaining team suppressed her position with heavy, controlled bursts.

"Chloe, the terminal!" Caleb shouted, grabbing the envelope and the encrypted hard drives from the box.

Chloe slammed her laptop shut, jamming her optical cables back into her bag. "The triple-node purge took down Node 03, but Node 04 is pulling an automated data mirror right now! If those contractors take these drives, Victor gets the master decryption keys back!"

"He won't get them," Caleb said.

He stepped out of the narrow vault interior, his sidearm raised. He aimed for the high-voltage junction box mounted on the wall directly above the vault door.

He pulled the trigger twice.

Sparks erupted from the transformer panel in a blinding shower of blue light. The heavy magnetic locks on the circular vault door lost power instantly.

With a deep, mechanical groan, the four-inch-thick steel door swung inward under its own massive counterweight, slamming shut and sealing the primary vault chamber off from the corridor.

The heavy iron door blocked the contractors' advance, but it also trapped Caleb, Evelyn, Chloe, and Maya inside the sealed vault room with no front exit.

"Caleb!" Evelyn gasped, looking at the solid iron door. "We're locked in!"

"We aren't staying in the vault," Caleb said, his voice flat and steady. He pointed to the small maintenance hatch in the lower floor grating—the access pipe leading back down into the utility trench. "Down the shaft! Now!"

Maya moved first, pulling the iron floor grate open and dropping into the dark, wet pipe below. Evelyn guided Chloe down right behind her.

Caleb stood by the shaft opening, holding his pistol toward the glass observation window. Outside in the corridor, two contractors were setting a heavy thermite charge against the vault's glass frame.

The intercom speaker crackled again, Victor Vance's voice cutting through the hiss of the arming charges.

"Run as far as you like, Caleb," Victor said, his tone entirely devoid of anger, replaced by a smooth, terrifying patience. "You hold your father's keys, but I hold Node 04. The Shanghai exchange opens at nine o'clock tomorrow morning. Every asset your father tried to protect will be liquidated under my personal account."

"Not while I'm breathing, Vance," Caleb said into the room's pickup mic.

"Then you have less than twenty hours to die, Mr. Thorne," Victor replied.

The thermite charge flared with a blinding, white-hot hiss, melting through the reinforced glass frame.

Caleb dropped into the dark utility shaft, pulling the iron floor grate back into place above his head just as a wave of heat and shattered glass showered the vault floor.

They waded through the knee-deep water of the drainage conduit, sprinting through the darkness until they burst back out into the humid night air at the Lantau Island sea wall.

The dark-hulled motor launch was still idling in the reeds near the abandoned pier, its electric motors running silently against the tide.

Miller's Dutch contact stood on the stern, reaching out to haul Chloe and Evelyn aboard as they scrambled over the slick rocks.

"They breached the bank's upper floor!" Maya reported, taking a position at the stern with her sidearm aimed back at the drainage portal. "We have three minutes before their marine team launches from the port!"

"Cast off!" Caleb ordered, stepping onto the boat's deck.

The launch surged backward, its twin outboards digging into the black water as it turned hard toward the open channel.

Behind them, high-power searchlights flared to life along the roof of the Kowloon Commercial Bank, sweeping across the dark waters of Victoria Harbour. Two fast tactical speedboats dropped from the commercial pier, their diesel engines roaring into the quiet night as they began a high-speed pursuit.

Chloe opened her laptop on the boat's engine cover, wiping salt spray from the screen. Her fingers moved frantically across the keys.

"Chloe, trace Node 04," Caleb said, leaning over her shoulder while holding a cloth against his bleeding bandage.

"Node 04 isn't a shadow server like the Elysium," Chloe said, her face pale under the glow of the monitor. "It's built directly into the core hardware of the Shanghai International Financial Centre. Victor Vance isn't hiding on a boat, Caleb. He's operating from the top floor of the main banking tower."

Evelyn sat on the stern bench, her hands trembling as she looked at the sealed manila envelope in Caleb's lap. "Richard knew Victor was alive... that's why he put the Shanghai seal on this envelope twenty years ago."

Caleb reached down with his right hand, tearing open the wax seal on his father's envelope.

Inside was a single sheet of heavy paper, filled with handwritten coordinates, along with a secondary copper key smaller than the one from Vault 108.

Tucked behind the paper was an old, faded photograph.

It showed Richard Thorne standing outside the Shanghai International Financial Centre, alongside a younger Victor Vance... and a third man whose face had been deliberately scratched out with a blade.

Below the photograph, Richard had written a single line:

The ledger doesn't start in Zurich. It starts with the third founder.

Chloe looked at the secondary copper key, then at the coordinates on the paper. "Caleb, those coordinates don't point to the bank tower in Shanghai."

Caleb's eyes narrowed. "Where do they point?"

"They point to a private container terminal in the Port of Shanghai," Chloe said. "Registered under a company called Red Star Logistics."

Behind their launch, the two Helios speedboats were closing the distance fast, their searchlights cutting through the fog, heavy automatic fire beginning to skip across the dark water around them.

Maya fired two controlled bursts from her sidearm, forcing the lead speed boat to bank hard to avoid the spray. "We can't outrun them all the way to open water, Caleb!"

Caleb looked from the faded photograph in his hand to the dark, roaring coastline of the mainland rising through the fog ahead.

"We aren't going to open water," Caleb said, his voice hard and cold. "Head for the Shenzhen rail link."
