The red dot on the screen stopped moving.

Marcus stared at it. His face was pale. "They're here."

The truck lurched to a halt. The driver slammed the brakes. Tires screeched against gravel.

Cain was already moving. He threw open the rear door. Jumped out. The cold air hit his face like a slap.

The road stretched ahead. Empty. Silent. No vehicles. No movement.

But the static was screaming.

Cain raised his rifle. Scanned the darkness. Nothing.

Then he saw them.

The Strays emerged from the tree line. Dozens of them. Flickering shapes of gray and white. Their eyes were black voids. Their mouths were open in silent screams.

They moved toward the truck. Slow. Deliberate. Hungry.

"Lena, stay inside," Cain shouted.

He stepped forward. The Strays stopped. Turned toward him.

Sarah's face appeared in the crowd. Her eyes were black. Her mouth was open.

*You shouldn't have come,* she whispered. *She's waiting for you.*

Cain raised his hand. The static surged. He pushed it outward.

"Stop," he commanded.

The Strays hesitated. Their forms flickered. Unstable.

Then they surged forward again.

Cain fired. Bullets passed through them. No effect. They were ghosts. Immaterial. Unkillable.

One of them reached him. Its hand passed through his chest. The cold was absolute. He felt his breath leave his lungs.

"Lena!" he shouted. "The jammer! In the truck!"

She was already moving. Threw open a compartment. Pulled out a device. Activated it.

A high-pitched whine filled the air. The Strays recoiled. Their forms flickered. Dissolved.

Silence.

Cain fell to his knees. Gasping. The cold in his chest slowly faded.

Marcus appeared beside him. "Are you okay?"

"Fine. How long does the jammer work?"

"Five minutes. Maybe less."

"Then we need to move."

They scrambled back to the truck. The driver was dead. A Stray had passed through him. His body was frozen solid.

Marcus pushed the body aside. Took the wheel. Lena climbed in beside him. Cain jumped into the back.

The engine roared to life. The truck lurched forward.

Behind them, the Strays reformed. Chased after them. But the jammer held them at bay.

"How long to the border?" Cain shouted.

"Six hours," Marcus replied. "But we'll need to stop for fuel."

"We don't have six hours."

"We don't have a choice."

The truck sped on. The Strays fell behind. Disappeared into the darkness.

Cain sat in the back. Breathing hard. His chest ached. The static buzzed at the edges of his mind.

Lena's face appeared in the opening between cab and cargo area.

"Are you hurt?" she asked.

"I'm fine."

"You're not fine. You almost died."

"I didn't."

She stared at him. Her eyes were tired. Worried.

"We should turn back," she said. "Find another way."

"There is no other way."

"There's always another way."

Cain shook his head. "Vance has the amplifier. If she activates it, the Strays will flood the world. Everyone will die. Including you."

"So we walk into a trap?"

"We walk into a fight. There's a difference."

She didn't argue. She knew he was right.

The hours passed. The landscape changed. Mountains became plains. Plains became forests. The cold deepened.

Marcus stopped the truck at a small village. Deserted. Abandoned.

"We need fuel," he said. "And supplies. Ten minutes."

Cain climbed out. Stretched his legs. The air was freezing. His breath came in clouds.

He walked through the village. Empty houses. Empty streets. A church with a collapsed roof.

He stopped at the church. Looked inside. The pews were overturned. The altar was covered in dust.

The static hummed.

Sarah appeared. Sitting on the altar. Her legs crossed. Her eyes still black.

*You're close,* she said. *But you're not ready.*

"Ready for what?"

*To face her. To face what you've become.*

"I don't want to become anything."

*You already have. You just refuse to accept it.*

She stood. Walked toward him. Her hand reached out. Touched his face.

The cold was familiar now. Almost comforting.

*You're the weapon she created,* she said. *But you're also the one who can destroy her.*

"How?"

*By embracing the static. Fully. Completely. Let it consume you.*

"Then I become like you."

*No. You become something else. Something that can defeat her.*

Sarah's form flickered. Began to dissolve.

*She's coming, Cain. All of them. They're coming for you.*

She disappeared.

Cain stood in the empty church. Alone. The static buzzed. The cold lingered.

He walked back to the truck. Marcus was fueling. Lena was loading supplies.

"We need to go," Cain said.

"Two more minutes," Marcus replied.

"We don't have two minutes."

Marcus looked up. Saw Cain's face.

"What happened?"

"Sarah. She warned me. Vance is coming."

Marcus dropped the fuel hose. Moved to the truck.

"Get in," he said. "Now."

They climbed in. The engine started. The truck roared forward.

Behind them, the sky darkened. Clouds formed. Lightning flashed.

Not natural. Something else.

The Strays came with the storm.

Hundreds of them. Pouring from the clouds. Descending like rain.

Lena screamed. Marcus swore. Cain stared.

"Jammer!" he shouted.

Lena activated it. The high-pitched whine filled the air.

The Strays hesitated. Slowed. But didn't stop.

"Too many," Marcus said. "The jammer can't hold them all."

Cain looked at his hands. The static was screaming. The scar on his chest was burning.

He had to do something.

"Keep driving," he said.

"What are you going to do?"

"Something I should have done a long time ago."

Cain jumped out of the moving truck. Hit the ground. Rolled.

He stood. Faced the Strays.

The static roared.

He opened himself to it.

The cold flooded his body. The voices filled his mind. Sarah's voice. The others. All of them.

He raised his hands. The static exploded outward.

The Strays stopped. Turned toward him. Their eyes were black. Their mouths were open.

But they didn't attack.

They waited.

Cain felt it. The connection. The control.

He could command them.

"Follow me," he said.

The Strays obeyed.

Cain walked toward the truck. The Strays followed. Dozens of them. Hundreds.

He climbed back in. The truck was still moving. Lena and Marcus stared at him.

"What did you do?" Lena asked.

Cain looked at his hands. The static was calm. The voices were quiet.

"I made a choice," he said. "I embraced it."

Marcus nodded slowly. "You're ready."

"Ready for what?"

"Ready to face her."

The truck drove on. The Strays followed. An army of ghosts.

Ahead, the mountains rose. The facility was close.

The final confrontation was coming.

Cain felt it. The static knew it.

He was ready.
