THE ROAD TO SIBERIA

The vehicle hummed beneath them.

A cargo truck. Modified. Armored. The kind used for smuggling weapons across borders. Marcus had arranged it. Of course he had.

Cain sat in the back. Lena was beside him. Marcus was up front, speaking quietly to the driver.

Outside, the city faded. Buildings became sparse. Roads became empty. The urban sprawl gave way to open country.

"How far?" Cain asked.

"Three days," Marcus replied. "The facility is remote. Deep in the Siberian wilderness. We'll stop for supplies along the way."

Three days. Seventy-two hours. More than enough time for Vance to complete her plan.

"We should move faster," Cain said.

"We can't. The Frequency Division is watching the airports. The borders. Any overt movement gets us killed."

Marcus turned back to the front. The conversation was over.

Lena shifted beside Cain. Her hand found his.

"We're going to be okay," she said.

Cain looked at her. His sister. The only family he had left.

"You shouldn't be here," he said.

"I'm exactly where I need to be."

"You're a journalist. Not a soldier."

"I'm the one who's been investigating this for years. I know the players. The locations. The history." She squeezed his hand. "You need me."

Cain didn't argue. She was right. And he was too tired to fight.

The truck rattled on. Hours passed. The sun set. The stars emerged.

Cain's mind drifted.

Sarah's face appeared in the darkness. Her black eyes. Her reaching hand.

*Find me.*

He closed his eyes. Pushed the vision away.

Not now. Not yet.

The truck stopped. Marcus opened the rear door.

"Rest stop," he said. "Fifteen minutes. Stretch your legs."

Cain climbed out. The air was cold. Clean. They were in the mountains now. Sparse trees. Rocky terrain.

He walked away from the truck. Found a boulder. Sat down.

Lena followed. She sat beside him.

"What happened in Siberia?" she asked. "The real story."

Cain stared at the stars.

"There was a mission. The experiment. The frequency emitter. It was supposed to be a test. Non-lethal. Just a demonstration."

"But something went wrong."

"The emitter activated. The door opened. The Strays came through." He paused. "Everyone died. Except me."

Lena was silent for a moment.

"Why you?"

"I don't know."

"Marcus said you were different. Immune."

"Maybe." Cain looked at his hands. "Or maybe I'm just the one who hasn't died yet."

Lena put her arm around him. They sat in silence.

The moment was broken by a shout from the truck.

"Cain! Get over here!"

Marcus's voice. Urgent.

Cain moved. Lena followed. They reached the truck's cab.

Marcus pointed at the console. A screen displayed satellite imagery. A convoy. Headed toward them.

"Frequency Division," Marcus said. "They found us."

"How many?"

"Three vehicles. Ten operatives. Heavily armed."

Cain looked at the road ahead. Open. Exposed. No cover.

"Can we outrun them?"

"Not in this truck. They're faster."

"Then we fight."

Marcus nodded. He opened a compartment. Pulled out weapons. Handed one to Cain. One to Lena.

"Stay behind me," Cain said.

"I can fight," Lena replied.

"I know. But stay behind me anyway."

She didn't argue.

The convoy appeared in the distance. Headlights cutting through the darkness.

Cain moved to the edge of the road. Raised his rifle. Waited.

The first vehicle approached. He fired. The windshield shattered. The driver swerved. Crashed into a rock.

The second vehicle stopped. Doors opened. Operatives spilled out. Weapons raised.

Cain fired again. Dropped one. Another.

They returned fire. Bullets sparked off the rocks around him.

The static surged.

Cain embraced it.

The Strays appeared. Flickering shapes in the darkness. Their eyes were black. Their hands were reaching.

"Protect us," Cain commanded.

They moved. Not fast. Not slow. They simply were. And then they weren't.

The Frequency Division operatives screamed. Dropped their weapons. Clutched at invisible enemies.

One man fell. His body twitched. Unmoving.

Another. Another.

Within seconds, the convoy was silent.

The Strays dissolved. Faded into the static.

Cain stood in the center of the road. Breathing hard. The scar on his chest burned.

Lena approached. Her face was pale.

"Did you—"

"Yes."

She didn't ask more.

Marcus moved among the bodies. Checking for survivors. There were none.

"They're all dead," he said. "You killed them."

"They were coming to kill us."

Marcus nodded. "We need to move. More will come."

They returned to the truck. The driver was alive. Shaken but functional.

"Go," Marcus ordered.

The truck lurched forward. The convoy faded into the distance.

Cain sat in the back. Staring at his hands.

He'd killed them. Ten men. Just like that.

The static hummed. Satisfied.

He pushed it away.

Hours passed. The road stretched on. The mountains grew higher. The air grew colder.

Cain felt the weight of everything. Sarah's voice. Marcus's lies. Vance's betrayal. Lena's presence.

He looked at his sister. She was asleep. Her head rested on his shoulder.

For a moment, he felt peace.

Then the static surged.

Sarah's face appeared. Her eyes were black. Her mouth was open.

*You're getting closer,* she whispered. *But they're waiting.*

Cain's eyes snapped open. The truck was moving. The mountains were passing.

He looked at his hands. They were shaking.

"Marcus," he called out. "How long until we reach the border?"

"Twelve hours. Why?"

"Because they're waiting for us."

Marcus didn't respond. He was already on the console. Scanning frequencies.

"We're being monitored," he said. "Satellite. Drone. Something."

Cain moved to the front. Looked at the screen.

A red dot. Approaching fast.

"They're coming," Cain said.

"Not Frequency Division. Something else."

The dot grew larger.

"Vance," Cain said. "She's sending the Strays."

Marcus's face went pale.

"We need to stop," he said. "Now."

"Why?"

"Because they'll find us. No matter where we go. We need to make a stand."

Cain looked at Lena. Still asleep. Still innocent.

"No," he said. "We keep moving. I'll hold them off."

"You can't fight an army of ghosts alone."

"I can try."

Marcus didn't argue.

They drove on.

The red dot grew closer.

The static roared.

Cain closed his eyes.

And waited.

"This is one of my safe houses.""Used to be," Marcus said. "Now it's neutral ground."Cain moved to the window. Looked out at the city. Somewhere out there, Vance was moving pieces on the board. Preparing her next move."Start talking," he said. "You have thir
