THE FROZEN APPROACH

The blizzard hit them an hour before dawn.

White. Violent. Unforgiving. The wind screamed across the frozen tundra. Visibility dropped to zero.

Marcus slowed the truck to a crawl. His knuckles were white on the steering wheel.

"We're close," he shouted over the storm. "Five kilometers. Maybe less."

Cain sat in the passenger seat. His eyes were closed. The static hummed in his mind. The Strays followed in the storm. Invisible. Waiting.

Lena was in the back. She'd been silent for hours. Processing. Preparing.

"We can't drive through this," Cain said. "The truck will get stuck."

"We can't walk either," Marcus replied. "We'd freeze to death in minutes."

Cain opened his eyes. Looked at the swirling white beyond the windshield.

"Then we make them come to us."

He climbed out of the truck. The wind hit him like a wall. The cold was instant. Biting. But the static protected him. Warmed him from within.

He raised his hands. Focused.

The Strays emerged from the blizzard. Dozens of them. Their forms flickered in the snow. Their black eyes watched him.

*Find her,* Cain commanded. *Find the facility.*

The Strays moved. Disappeared into the white.

Marcus climbed out. He'd put on a heavy coat. His face was red with cold.

"What did you do?" he asked.

"I sent them ahead."

"To do what?"

"To find a way in."

They waited. The blizzard raged. Minutes passed. The cold crept through even the static's protection.

Then the Strays returned. One of them hovered before Cain. Its mouth opened. A sound emerged. Not words. Just static.

But Cain understood.

*Follow.*

He turned to Marcus. "There's a way. An old service tunnel. A kilometer south."

Marcus nodded. They moved. Lena followed. The Strays led them through the storm.

The tunnel entrance was hidden beneath a frozen overhang. A rusted metal door. Sealed. Locked.

Marcus approached it. Studied the lock. "Electronic. Vance's people have been maintaining it."

"Can you open it?"

"In my sleep."

Marcus pulled out a device. Attached it to the lock. The screen flickered. Numbers scrolled. The lock clicked open.

The door swung inward. Darkness. Cold. The smell of decay.

Cain stepped inside. The Strays followed. Marcus and Lena came behind him.

The tunnel stretched ahead. Narrow. Low-ceilinged. The walls were covered in frost.

"How long?" Cain asked.

"Five hundred meters," Marcus replied. "It leads to sub-level four."

They moved forward. Slowly. Carefully. The static buzzed in Cain's mind. The Strays were restless. Hungry.

"The Frequency Division," Lena whispered. "They'll be waiting."

"Let them wait," Cain replied. "We're not here to fight them."

"What are we here to do?"

"End this."

The tunnel curved. A light appeared ahead. Faint. Flickering.

Cain raised his hand. The Strays stopped. Waited.

He moved forward alone. Peered around the corner.

A guard post. Two men. Armed. Alert.

Cain focused. The static surged. One of the Strays moved past him. Approached the guards.

They didn't see it. Not until it was too late.

The guard on the left dropped first. His body convulsed. Then stilled.

The second guard raised his weapon. Fired wildly. The Stray passed through him. He fell. Silent.

Cain moved forward. Stepped over the bodies. Marcus and Lena followed.

"Sub-level four," Marcus said. "Just ahead."

The tunnel opened into a larger space. A laboratory. Rows of equipment. Screens. Consoles.

Scientists in white coats. Security personnel. Dozens of them.

They turned as Cain entered. Weapons raised.

"Stop," Cain commanded.

The static exploded outward. The Strays surged forward.

Men screamed. Dropped their weapons. Ran.

Cain walked through the chaos. The Strays parted for him. Protected him.

At the far end of the room, a massive door. Reinforced steel. A single access panel.

Marcus approached it. His fingers flew across the panel.

"The amplifier core is on the other side," he said. "Vance is in there. With her elite team."

"Can you open it?"

"Give me a minute."

Cain turned. Faced the room. The Strays were everywhere. Herding the scientists. Disarming the security personnel.

Lena appeared beside him. "This is madness."

"This is war."

Marcus stepped back from the panel. "It's open."

The massive door slid apart. Slowly. Grinding.

Beyond it, darkness. And a low hum. The frequency. The amplifier.

Cain stepped forward. The Strays followed. Marcus and Lena behind him.

The room was vast. A cathedral of steel and wires. In the center, a massive machine. Pulses of light rippled across its surface.

And at its base, Vance stood. Calm. Waiting.

"Cain," she said. "I was wondering when you'd arrive."

Vance's voice echoed in the chamber. Steady. Unafraid.

"You knew we were coming."

"Of course. I planned it. Every step."

She gestured to the machine. "This amplifier can control the Strays. Create an army. A force that can't be stopped."

"You're insane."

"Maybe. But I'm also right. The world needs order. Control. Without it, chaos. Anarchy."

"And you're the one to provide it?"

"Someone has to."

Cain stepped forward. The Strays followed.

"Step away from the machine," he said.

"Or what? You'll kill me? You've already killed so many."

Vance smiled. Cold. Empty.

"Your hands are covered in blood. Just like mine."

Cain stopped. Her words hit him. Hard.

She was right. He'd killed. Dozens. Hundreds. In the name of survival.

"You're no different from me," she continued. "You just haven't accepted it yet."

"I'm different because I'm stopping you."

"Stopping me?" Vance laughed. "You're not stopping anything. You're walking into a trap."

She pressed a button on her console.

The machine hummed louder. The frequency intensified.

Cain's vision blurred. The static roared. The Strays around him flickered. Disoriented.

"What's happening?" Lena shouted.

"The amplifier," Marcus said. "She's controlling them!"

Vance stepped forward. Her eyes were glowing. The same static. The same power.

"I've been studying you, Cain. Your connection to the Strays. Your ability to command them. And I've replicated it. Perfected it."

She raised her hand. The Strays around her surged. Moved toward Cain.

"Kill him," she commanded.

The Strays attacked.

Cain raised his hands. The static exploded outward. The Strays stopped. Recoiled.

"Protect Lena!" Cain shouted.

His Strays moved. Formed a barrier around her.

Vance's Strays surged forward. Collided with Cain's. The two armies clashed. Invisible. Violent. Spectral.

Cain felt the strain. The effort. The static was tearing him apart.

"Surrender," Vance said. "Let me complete my work. The world will be better for it."

"Never."

Cain pushed harder. The static surged. His Strays fought back. Pushed Vance's forces away.

She stumbled. Her concentration broke.

The machine flickered. The frequency wavered.

"Do it now!" Marcus shouted.

Cain didn't hesitate.

He ran toward the machine. The amplifier core. The source of all of it.

Vance lunged at him. Her hands reaching. The static crackling around her.

"You'll destroy everything!" she screamed.

"I'm saving everything!"

Cain grabbed the core. The static exploded. His body burned. The voices screamed.

But he held on.

He pulled.

The core shattered.

The machine died.

The frequency ceased.

Vance collapsed. The Strays around her dissolved. Faded. Gone.

Silence.

Cain fell to his knees. The static was quiet. The voices were silent.

He looked at his hands. They were steady. Clean.

Vance was on the floor. Unmoving. Unconscious.

The chamber was still.

Marcus appeared beside him. Lena was behind him. Unharmed.

"It's over," Marcus said.

Cain looked at the broken machine. The silent Strays. The fallen enemy.

"No," he said. "It's just beginning."

He stood. Walked toward the exit.

Lena followed. "What do you mean?"

Cain stopped. Turned.

"Vance wasn't the only one. There are others. The Frequency Division is still out there. And the Strays. They're still here. Waiting."

He looked at the darkness beyond the door.

"I've just started fighting."
