Christmas was already history, and Sapphire City was preparing for the New Year celebrations. Restaurants, clubs, hotels, and homes were dressed like brides.
There was an economic boom in Sapphire City that year. It created more billionaires and millionaires than in the entire last half-century. Almost every middle-class family was flush with cash, and they didn’t shy away from spending it on holidays. Almost every family. It was the evening of Christmas Eve. A little boy no older than seven walked along the street with an excited smile dancing on his face. A single coin was firmly lodged in his pocket. The boy’s family was poor, and his father struggled with his new garment shop. The man dreamt of building a mall, which was a distant dream. Moreover, the family recently had a baby girl. Money was tight. Christmas had been a lousy affair as they couldn’t afford a Christmas tree, turkey, or gifts. However, the kid’s mother generously gave him a fifty-cent coin as a holiday allowance. Half a dollar wasn’t much, but at least it could fetch him some sweets. The boy skipped joyously along the street. Suddenly, a spell-binding fragrance made him stop in his tracks. He was standing right in front of an upscale bakery and restaurant. The smell of delicious cakes, pastries, brownies, and cupcakes wafted from the open door. The kid retrieved the half dollar from his pocket and stared at it hopefully. “Maybe I can buy something here if I spend all of it.” Feeling optimistic, he stepped forward to enter the bakery. A pot-bellied guard immediately obstructed his path. “Where do you think you’re going?” “To get myself a pastry,” the boy replied pleasantly. The guard named Bob narrowed his eyes and stared at the intruder’s clothes. He wore a frayed t-shirt and washed-out shorts. His shoes were heavily scuffed, and his toe peeked out from a corner tear. “This place isn’t for you. Scram!” “Why?” the boy protested. “I just want to get myself a pastry.” Bob crossed his arms and glowered at him. “The cheapest bakery item in our restaurant costs five dollars. Do you have that much?” The kid’s smile faltered. “I have fifty pence.” Bob broke into condescending laughter. “You won’t even get water for half a dollar. Tell you what, the garbage can is just around the corner. Stale food from last night may still be dumped there. You can take your pick.” Patron families of the restaurant were seated at tables inside with delicacies laid out before them. They could hear the conversation between the two. Many of them sniggered and continued with their meals. Some actually pointed at the boy and laughed aloud. “Is he a homeless kid?” “Scare him off! Shoo!” “Don’t let him come in with those dirty shoes!” “He might steal food from us. Make him go away!” “Look at him. The beggarly kid thinks he belongs here!” The boy’s eyes watered hearing the ridicule. However, he didn’t cry. His mom always told him to be strong in the face of humiliation. They were poor, but they had pride. “I’m sorry for troubling you, mister,” he said politely and walked away. The boy had taken a few steps when he heard a voice calling from behind. “You! Wait!” He turned around to see a little girl half a foot shorter than him. She had dark hair and inky eyes and was dressed in a cute black frock. The appearance was of a tiny gothic princess. The girl caught up to him shortly, racing on her little shoes with tiny tip-taps. “You shouldn’t make a lady run!” she exclaimed, catching her breath. The boy was transfixed by her uncommon appearance and unsolicited approach. “You’re not a lady. You’re a little girl.” She grimaced for a moment but recovered instantly. “Here, have some.” The kid realized she was handing him a chocolate pastry on a paper plate. His eyes widened in disbelief. “Oh! Why would you give me your food? I am a stranger!” She shrugged casually. “You look like you want it more. Besides, my Dad is very wealthy. He can get me hundreds of these.” The boy glared at the delicacy longingly but then changed his mind. He shook his head. “Sorry. I appreciate your kindness, but Mom told me never to accept anything for free.” The girl was taken aback. “Are you really from this city? People fight each other for the smallest things even though they have plenty. You wouldn’t even accept a pastry?” The boy shook his head again to indicate refusal. There was no point trying to change his mind. “Hmm. I am impressed by your integrity. Fine! I’ll give you the pastry in return for something.” “Err… What do you want? I only have half a dollar.” “I don’t want your money.” “Then?” The girl bit her tiny lower lip. “Nobody in my class likes me because my Dad is rich and powerful. They treat me like I’m a disease.” “Oh, that sucks.” “So will you be my lover?” The boy giggled. “Love is for grown-ups, silly! Mom told me.” The girl scratched her head. “Umm… Then be my lover when we are grown up.” The temptation of the chocolate pastry hung heavy on the kid. Moreover, he didn’t actually know what being a ‘lover’ meant. It was probably some kind of special friendship, according to him. “Err… I guess I can do that…” “Promise?” “Promise.” The boy accepted the pastry after the two children struck a binding deal. He finished up the slice faster than her eyes could see. “I have to go now. Mom will be worried.” “So will you remember our promise?” “Cross my heart and hope to die,” he replied sincerely. The girl smiled pleasantly, making dimples appear on her cheeks. She looked so pretty that it made him blush. He turned to leave shyly. “By the way, what is your name?” the girl asked suddenly when the boy had walked some distance. “Tyler Grant. What is yours?” “Amelia Briar.” “Bye, Amelia.” “Bye, Tyler.”Latest Chapter
321 The Seraphim King
"Looks like you have a visitor," Tyler said with a knowing smile, ignoring Seraph's invitation to sit on the Seraphim King throne."A visitor?" Seraph asked in confusion. "There is no being who is powerful enough to infiltrate my castle. Not even Zeus!""I didn't say they were a being…" the young man replied with a shrug. The words had barely left his lips when the floor beneath them began to ripple. Water welled up from the crystal tiles, rising gently at first. Then, like a spring bubbling from an underground lake, the water began to swell higher, lapping at Tyler's ankles, his calves, until it reached his knees. The water was cool, carrying the scent of fresh rain and exotic lakes, shimmering with magical light that reflected the hall's crystal glow.Tyler felt healed of all his pain, wounds, and exhaustion from climbing to the cave. He looked up toward Seraph with his six wings folded majestically. The supreme being's face had changed. The joy of liberation faded into something vu
320 True Love
"Who exactly is this Destiny you fell in love with?" Tyler asked.Seraph's dying-star eyes fixated on him, and the young man saw a flicker of something almost human in that godly madness.Seraph leaned forward as much as his chains allowed. The metal groaned like a dying beast. "Destiny... She exists beyond time and space, beyond the grasp of imagination itself.""Do you mean she is a goddess?"The supreme being waved a dismissive hand. "Destiny is neither a goddess you pray to, nor a force you can command."He looked up as if he could stare through the crystals into the sky. "She is the weave of existence itself—the thread that binds fates of living and non-living, the silent architect of heroes and their stories."Tyler felt like he had learned nothing new from the explanation. "Where is she?""Destiny only reveals herself to those who dare to defy the impossible—true heroes who bend predestination with their wills alone."The young man furrowed his brow because something about this
319 The Origin
"Who are you?" Tyler demanded of the massive seated figure. His voice echoed throughout the cavernous, ancient hall like a challenge. The young man stood panting. Every muscle in his body screamed from the grueling climb. It had been months since he crossed the forest tunnel into Wings Island. The moment he stepped through, the island's wards stripped him of his powers. No mystical energy surged through his veins. No divine contracts answered his call.Excalibur was nowhere in the ether, and Poseidon's Trident refused to manifest. Most surprisingly, his enhanced strength had vanished, leaving him as ordinary as the day he went to Montserrat Prison. The terrain had been merciless to Tyler. He climbed up jagged cliffs that clawed at his hands until they bled. He fought through vines thick as pythons, ensnaring his ankles. Endless dead drops forced him to crawl on bloodied knees. The young man had rationed the meager supplies from his pack, sleeping in shallow caves to avoid wild animals
318 The Comet
Michelle frowned, pushing through the crowd. "Evacuation? What are you talking about, Sergeant? We just won the war against Lazarus' armies. What's the issue?"He grabbed her arm, speaking with an urgent and panicked voice. "Ma'am, there is no time for discussion. Please hurry!"The Queen followed him up the spiral stairs to the palace's observation deck. The city sprawled below like a wounded beast licking its scars. Apart from the sirens and alarms, everything seemed normal. What was the Sergeant worried about? The others trailed behind. Kat, Britta, Yara, Tracy, Isabella, and Mamushi arrived. The terrace was a station with radar tech, with screens flickering madly."My Queen… Please look," the Sergeant gasped, jabbing a finger at the central display. A blip streaked across the radar range.Michelle leaned in with raised brows. "What is that? A missile? Can't our air defense systems neutralize it? Why did you have to bring me up here?"The Sergeant looked scandalized as if he had se
317 The Petra War
"My Queen, we've lost the eastern flank!" a panicking lieutenant shouted over the roar of gunfire and crumbling buildings.Michelle Douglas stood atop the command post in Sapphire City's central square, her royal uniform smeared with soot and blood. The air was saturated with the smell of burning rubber, tar, and charred flesh. She gripped the radio tighter, trying to keep her voice steady. "Redirect the 7th Infantry from the docks. Flank them with the Gilded Guard. We must hold the square at all costs!"Petra's forces had been caught flat-footed when Lazarus Briar's armada struck at dawn. What began as a coastal skirmish erupted into a full-scale invasion. Petra, or even the American defense forces, weren't ready. It was as if the ships appeared out of a portal at sea, which probably wasn't far from the truth. They landed and spread like a contagion. Waves of black-armored soldiers stormed the beaches like locusts. At the same time, dark mages stayed in the background, weaving protec
316 The Decision
"I have decided what to do. The choice is quite simple," Tyler said calmly. The young man took a deep breath. "Butch Salvatore's dying wish was for me to claim the Seraphim King's throne. He poured all those years in prison training me, gave me this sigil and ring as his legacy. I owe him that much. I can't turn back now—not when I'm standing at the gates."Everyone else present nodded in support of Tyler's decision. It was the rational thing to do."But then, Sapphire City is my home, where my family and friends live," he added thoughtfully. "Now that I am the King of Petra, Michelle's kingdom is mine too. Everything is under siege, and I'm here vying for another throne. Therefore, it was simple but difficult to arrive at my decision.""What do you mean?" Britta asked in confusion.Tyler smiled and turned to the guards, his eyes locking onto theirs. "Could you provide me with an important piece of information about Wings Island?"The taller guard raised a brow. "Speak, heir, but hurr
