Chapter 1
The Birthday Cake and the Poisoned Cup
The aroma of chicken broth filled the small kitchen, but the atmosphere in the dining room outside was ice-cold.
Ethan Vance carefully placed the final dish on the table. A perfectly braised sea bass, his wife’s favorite. Today was his thirtieth birthday. He didn’t care about a party, but he had spent four hours preparing this meal, hoping for a rare moment of peace with Chloe.
The front door clicked open. Chloe Wright walked in, her tailored business suit flawless, but her beautiful face was masked with exhaustion and irritation. Behind her stepped Julian Ross, dressed in a bespoke three-piece suit, a smug smile playing on his lips.
Ethan’s hand paused on the ladle. "Chloe? You're back. I made dinner. It’s..."
"Clear the table, Ethan," Chloe interrupted, her voice cutting through the room like a shard of glass. She didn't even look at him. She tossed her designer handbag onto the sofa. "Julian’s company just secured the preliminary draft for the Riverfront Development Project. We need the dining table to review the contract blueprints immediately."
Ethan stood frozen by the table. "Chloe, today is my birthday. We agreed we’d eat together."
Julian let out a soft, patronizing chuckle, stepping forward to pat Ethan’s shoulder. The gesture looked friendly, but his fingers dug into Ethan’s trap muscle with insulting force. "Oh, happy birthday, Ethan! Look, I completely forgot. But business waits for no one. The Riverfront Project is worth fifty million dollars. You wouldn't want Chloe to lose her family's inheritance over a bowl of soup, right? Be a good guy and pack the food away."
Ethan didn’t move. He looked directly at Chloe. "You forgot too?"
Chloe finally snapped her gaze to him, her brow furrowing with deep impatience. "Ethan, don't be immature. It's just a birthday. You have one every year. Right now, the Wright Group is on the verge of bankruptcy. If Julian hadn't used his family’s connections to secure an audience with the mysterious Director of the Veridian Vanguard, our family would be ruined. Can you stop being so selfish for once?"
‘Selfish.’
Ethan felt a cold, sharp ache in his chest.
The Veridian Vanguard was the most powerful underground commercial syndicate in the city. The "mysterious Director" Chloe spoke of with such reverence was currently standing right in front of her, wearing an apron, holding a dish towel. Ethan had signed the approval order for the Wright Group’s contract just three hours ago on his encrypted phone, solely because Chloe had cried in her sleep the night before about her family's debts.
And yet, Julian was standing here, boldly taking the credit.
"Julian secured it?" Ethan’s voice was dangerously calm. "Are you sure about that, Julian?"
Julian’s eyes flashed with a momentary panic, but it was instantly replaced by a mocking sneer. He leaned in, lowering his voice so only Ethan could hear. "Who cares who secured it, you useless trash? Chloe believes it was me. That’s all that matters. You're just a live-in dog. Go back to the kitchen."
Aloud, Julian sighed with a look of hurt. "Ethan, I know you're upset that you can't help Chloe with her career, but you shouldn't doubt my efforts. I stayed up for three nights straight begging my father to pull strings for the Wright family."
"Ethan, apologize to Julian right now!" Chloe’s voice rose, her disappointment palpable. "Julian has done so much for us. Look at yourself. For three years, you've done nothing but cook and clean. You don't bring a single dime into this house, and now you're insulting the man who is saving my family's future?"
Ethan looked at the woman he had protected in the shadows for three long years. He had given up the battlefield, given up his absolute authority, just to heal from his old wounds and live a quiet life with her. Whenever she faced a crisis, it mysteriously resolved itself. She thought it was luck. She thought it was Julian.
The emotional buildup of a thousand small slights suddenly coalesced into a heavy, suffocating weight.
"You really think he's the one saving you," Ethan said, a bitter laugh escaping his lips. He untied the apron and threw it onto the chair. "Fine. Review your contract."
"Ethan, where are you going? The floor hasn't been mopped yet!" Chloe called out angrily as Ethan walked toward the front door.
"I'm getting some air," Ethan said without turning around.
"Let him go, Chloe," Julian said smoothly, already unrolling a set of fake blueprints onto the dining table. "He's just throwing a tantrum because he feels inadequate. A real man supports his woman; he doesn't pout over a birthday."
Ethan slammed the door behind him. The night air was chilly, cutting through his thin shirt. He walked down the streets of the luxury villa district, his chest tight. He had sacrificed his pride, his status, and his brothers-in-arms' respect to be a ordinary husband, but to Chloe, his presence was lesser than a dog's.
Suddenly, his encrypted phone vibrated in his pocket. It was a secure line that only three people in the world possessed.
Ethan answered it. "Speak."
"Boss," a powerful, respectful voice resonated from the speaker. It was Brandon, the regional commander of the Veridian Vanguard. "The Wright Group just submitted their official paperwork for the Riverfront Project under Julian Ross's name. But our intelligence team just intercepted an encrypted communication. Julian Ross is playing a double game."
Ethan’s eyes narrowed, the coldness in his gaze returning. "Explain."
"Julian didn't pull any strings. He found out through a leak that you had already approved the Wright Group's application. He intercepted the notice, put his own company’s stamp on the cover letter, and presented it to Chloe Wright as his own achievement. Furthermore..." Brandon hesitated.
"Furthermore what?" Ethan demanded.
"Julian is secretly working with the Vance family’s exile faction, the very people who betrayed you and poisoned you four years ago. They know you are alive. Julian has agreed to lure Chloe into a trap tonight at the Grand Horizon Hotel to force her to sign over the entire Wright Group assets to them. In exchange, the Vance exiles will give Julian total control over the local market."
Ethan’s grip on the phone tightened until the casing groaned.
Julian wasn't just stealing credit; he was setting Chloe up for absolute ruin, trading her family’s lifeblood to Ethan’s oldest enemies. And Chloe was currently sitting at home, looking at Julian with eyes full of admiration, while treating her true savior like garbage.
"Boss, should I deploy the Vanguard forces to liquidate Julian Ross immediately?" Brandon asked, his voice dripping with lethal intent.
Ethan looked back in the direction of the villa. The lights were bright, but his heart was entirely dark.
"No," Ethan whispered, his voice cutting through the night like a blade. "Let him take her to the hotel. It's time Chloe sees exactly what kind of 'savior' she has chosen."
Ethan hung up. He hailed a cab and gave the driver the address of the Grand Horizon Hotel.

The silence in the boardroom was heavy enough to crack bone.Chloe stood frozen, her chest heaving as she stared at the man sitting in the high chair. Now, looking into those cold, dark eyes, she realized she had never truly known her husband at all.On the floor, Valerie was hyperventilating, her hands clawing at the polished marble as if trying to dig a hole to hide in. Her mind violently replayed every single memory of the past three years, every time she had thrown a dirty plate at his feet, every time she had called him a worthless dog, every time she had urged Chloe to leave him for Julian Ross."Ethan... Ethan, my dear son-in-law..." Valerie stammered, her voice a pathetic, wavering squeak. She tried to crawl forward, her expensive pearls scraping against the ground. "I... I was blind! I was possessed by ghosts! I d

The wind rustled through the dense treeline surrounding the Wright property, carrying a chill that had nothing to do with the weather.Inside the villa, the lights were bright, but in the dark courtyard, Ethan Vance stood perfectly still. He slipped his encrypted phone back into his pocket, his gaze fixed on the shifting shadows near the perimeter wall. He didn't retreat inside. He didn't call out to Chloe or Valerie. Doing so would only drag their panic into a situation that required absolute, silent precision.Six figures emerged from the tree line, moving with fluid, practiced stealth. They wore matte-black tactical gear, their faces hidden behind ballistic balaclavas. These weren't the low-level thugs Julian Ross had hired at the hotel; these were operatives from the Obsidian Fang, ruthless international mercenaries who left no witnesses. Each carried a suppressed submachine gun, their barrels pointed toward the ground as they
