The heavy oak door of the archive room clicked shut with a sharp, final mechanical sound. The lock turned from the outside with a heavy, echoing thud.

Basra scrambled backward from beneath the desk. His boots slipped slightly against the dusty floorboards in his haste.

Levi rose to his feet in a single, fluid motion. The soldier’s eyes scanned the high, shadowy corners of the vast room.

A faint hiss began to emanate from the bronze vents near the ceiling. Wisps of heavy, grey-black vapor drifted lazily down into the warm air.

The coal gas smelled sickeningly sweet and terribly sharp. It burned the back of Basra's throat instantly as he took a shallow breath.

The trap had sprung with terrifying precision. They were locked inside a sealed vault filling rapidly with toxic poison.

Levi crossed the room in long, silent strides. His heavy boots barely made a sound against the polished wood.

He reached the heavy mahogany desk and kicked it aside. The desk slid violently across the floor, crashing into a row of filing cabinets.

The sound echoed off the high stone walls like thunder. Outside, hurried footsteps began to rush toward the sealed archive doors.

They do not have minutes to find a way out. They barely have seconds before the gas overwhelms their lungs.

Basra clutched his chest as another wave of dizziness washed over him. The sync-static in his brain flared in blinding amber flashes.

Levi ignored the approaching guards entirely. His attention locked onto the towering stained-glass window at the far end of the hall.

The window depicted the city’s founding fathers in rich, dark colors. It stretched upward for nearly two full stories toward the vaulted ceiling.

A heavy brass fire iron rested in a decorative stand nearby. Levi snatched it up, his grip tightening around the cold metal handle.

The guards began slamming their fists against the oak door. Muffled shouts echoed through the thick wood, demanding surrender.

Levi did not hesitate for a fraction of a second. He pulled his arm back and hurled the heavy brass poker with all his might.

The iron bar smashed directly into the center of the stained glass. The sound of shattering art filled the room like an explosion.

Color and light shattered into a thousand gleaming fragments. Shards of red and blue glass rained down across the polished floorboards.

A rush of cold, fresh night air poured into the room. It pushed back the creeping wall of grey coal gas with an immediate gust.

Levi grabbed Basra by the collar of his servant uniform. He hauled the younger man forward toward the jagged window frame.

We have to move now, Levi commanded over the sound of the splintering oak door.

Basra scrambled onto the stone window sill. The ground two stories below looked terrifyingly distant in the pale moonlight.

The heavy oak door finally gave way with a deafening crash. Municipal guards poured into the room with drawn swords and torches.

Levi kicked out backward, catching the first guard in the chest. The man tumbled backward into his comrades, creating immediate chaos.

Jump, Levi ordered, pushing Basra out into the open air.

Basra fell through the shattered stained-glass window. The wind roared in his ears as the ground rushed up to meet him.

The cold night air whipped across his face with stinging force. He braced himself for the brutal impact waiting in the rose garden below.

He hit the soft, rain-soaked earth with a heavy thud. The breath rushed out of his lungs in a sharp, painful gasp.

He rolled instinctively through the muddy flower beds. The sharp thorns of the rose bushes tore mercilessly at his skin and fabric.

A heartbeat later, Levi landed beside him with a dull thud. The soldier absorbed the impact on his good shoulder, rolling smoothly into the mud.

Shouts erupted from the shattered window above them. Torches flared against the dark stone wall of the High Ward archive building.

Get up, Levi hissed, pulling Basra to his feet by the arm.

They stumbled through the mangled rose bushes together. The thick mud sucked at their boots, slowing every desperate step they took.

Behind them, hunting hounds began to bay in the courtyard. The deep, resonant barks echoed viciously through the palace gardens.

Basra’s ribs throbbed with a dull, sickening ache. Every breath felt like inhaling crushed glass as the coal gas cleared from his system.

Levi pressed forward, pushing through a dense wall of decorative hedges. His face was streaked with mud, sweat, and a thin line of fresh blood.

They broke out of the manicured gardens into a narrow cobbled alleyway. The shadows of the outer wall offered a brief, fragile moment of cover.

Footsteps clattered against the stone behind them in chaotic pursuit. The guards were closing the distance with terrifying speed.

Basra glanced back over his shoulder through the driving mist. Torchlight flickered against the wet stone walls of the courtyard entrance.

They are right behind us, Basra gasped, his voice raspy from the poison gas.

Let them look, Levi muttered, his eyes fixed on the darkness ahead.

They plunged deeper into the winding maze of service paths. The city’s distant sounds faded into the rhythmic splashing of their own hurried footsteps.

The fractured foundations of the capital loomed above them in the dark. Every street corner held a new threat, a new wall to climb.

Basra felt the residual data packet pulsing in the back of his mind. The system was watching, waiting for them to make a single fatal error.

Levi didn't slow his pace for a single second. The soldier moved with the brutal efficiency of a man who refused to die in a cage.

They rounded a sharp corner toward the abandoned gatehouse. The rusted iron gates stood slightly ajar in the pale, sickly moonlight.

It was their only path out of the immediate danger zone. It was a thin, fragile thread connecting them to the sprawling merchant district.

Basra squeezed through the narrow gap in the rusted bars first. The cold metal scraped against his bruised shoulder with a biting chill.

Levi slipped through the gate immediately afterward, pulling the iron shut behind them. He jammed a broken piece of wood into the archaic locking mechanism.

The hasty barricade wouldn't hold a determined squad for long. But it bought them precious minutes in the sprawling urban maze.

On the other side of the gate, the city stretched out before them. Rain began to fall in heavy, relentless drops against the slick cobblestones.

The cold downpour washed the blood and mud from their hands. It offered a harsh, cleansing relief to their battered, exhausted bodies.

Basra leaned his back against the damp brick wall of the gatehouse. He closed his eyes and tried to steady his racing, erratic heartbeat.

Levi stood watch near the edge of the darkened alley. His chest rose and fell in deep, measured rhythms despite the exertion.

The pursuit had temporarily lost their scent in the downpour. But the capital was still locked down tighter than a military drum.

Every guard in the district would be hunting for two escaped servants. Every gate and checkpoint would be flooded with description alerts.

Basra opened his eyes and looked at the scarred soldier. The silent partnership between them had been forged in fire and poison.

There was no turning back to the quiet obscurity of the slums now. They had crossed a line that could never be un-crossed.

The stolen tax deeds pressed heavily against Basra’s chest. The physical evidence of the Duke’s tyranny was safe inside his damp tunic.

Levi turned his head slightly to meet Basra’s exhausted gaze. There were no words exchanged, only a shared, grim understanding of the road ahead.

The storm overhead broke into a fierce, howling gale. Lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating the sprawling spires of the High Ward.

Basra pushed himself away from the damp brick wall. He flexed his fingers, feeling the faint, lingering tingle of the systemic static fade.

We need to reach the Weaver's Guild before dawn, Basra said quietly.

Levi gave a slow, deliberate nod in the dark. The soldier stepped out into the pouring rain without a moment of hesitation.

They moved together into the shadows of the middle district. The city awaited its awakening, entirely unaware of the storm brewing below.

Footsteps echoed softly on the slick stones as they vanished into the fog. The hunt was far from over, but the prey had just grown teeth.
