Cassie stared at Darius as though she had misheard him.
“What did you say?” Darius met her gaze without the slightest hesitation. “I said I want a divorce. It’s better for both of us to end this marriage.” For a few seconds, Cassie simply stared at him. Then she laughed. It wasn’t a genuine laugh. There was anger beneath it, sharp and unmistakable. Darius had caught her completely off guard, and for the first time that night, her confidence cracked. A divorce? She had always assumed that if their marriage ever ended, she would be the one to make that decision. She had looked down on Darius for years, convinced that he was lucky simply to have married into the Ashford family. She had even imagined the day she would finally kick him out of her life and watch him beg her for another chance. But she had never imagined Darius would be the one to say it first. To her, that wasn’t merely a divorce. It was an insult to her pride. “You want to divorce me?” Cassie repeated, her voice rising. “You?” Darius said nothing. Cassie’s face tightened. “You should be grateful I stayed with you this long. Do you have any idea how many times my family told me to divorce you? Everyone in the Ashford family knows you have nothing to offer me.” She pointed at him angrily. “I married you because I was trying to get over Aaron after we broke up. You were nothing more than a rebound, Darius. Did you really think this marriage was some great achievement for you?” Darius’s expression remained unchanged. Cassie became even more irritated by his silence. “And now you’re suddenly asking for a divorce as if you’re the one doing me a favor?” she scoffed. “Don’t flatter yourself. If anything, you’ve wasted three years of my life.” She glanced at Aaron before turning back to Darius. “But it doesn’t matter anymore. Aaron and I are getting back together.” Aaron smiled faintly but didn’t interrupt. Cassie folded her arms. “So if you want a divorce so badly, fine. Let’s get it done. I don’t have any reason to keep you around anymore.” Darius nodded once. “Then let’s end it.” His calm response made Cassie clench her fists. She had expected him to argue. She had expected him to apologize, perhaps even fall to his knees and beg her not to leave. Instead, he was standing there as though he had already accepted that the three years they spent together meant nothing. “Fine!” she snapped. Cassie immediately reached for her phone and called the Ashford family’s lawyer. “Come to the house immediately. I need the divorce agreement prepared tonight.” The lawyer arrived less than twenty minutes later with the necessary documents. By then, Cassie had regained some of her composure. Deep down, however, she still believed Darius would change his mind once the papers were placed in front of him. After all, this was Darius. The same man who had endured years of humiliation rather than leave her. She was convinced that once he realized their marriage was truly ending, he would come crawling back. The lawyer placed the documents on the table. “Mr. Darius, Mrs. Cassie, these are the divorce papers. Please review them before signing.” Darius barely looked at the pages. He picked up the pen and signed his name without hesitation. Cassie’s eyes widened. She had expected him to hesitate. He didn’t. Darius finished signing, placed the pen on the table, and pushed the papers toward her. “Your turn.” Cassie’s face darkened. For a moment, she simply stared at his signature. Then she snatched the pen off the table and angrily signed her name. “There,” she said, dropping the pen. “Are you satisfied?” Darius picked up his copy of the agreement. Cassie glared at him. “Don’t think you’ve won anything. You’ll regret this decision.” Darius remained silent. “You’ll come crawling back to me,” she continued, her voice filled with spite. “You’ll come back begging for another chance, just like the dog you’ve always been.” Darius finally looked at her. There was no anger or sadness in his eyes. “I won’t.” With those two words, he turned around and walked toward the door. Cassie’s expression froze. Darius didn’t look back as he stepped outside. Three years of marriage to the Ashford family had finally come to an end. Behind him, Cassie stood motionless, her fists clenched so tightly that her nails dug into her palms. She had wanted to be the one to throw him away. Instead, Darius had walked away first. And somehow, that hurt her pride more than she was willing to admit. Once Darius disappeared from sight, Aaron approached her and placed a hand on her shoulder. “You did the right thing, Cassie.” She turned toward him. Aaron smiled. “It was finally time for you to let go of that leech. A man like him was never worthy of you.” Cassie’s anger slowly faded. “You’re right,” she said. “That good-for-nothing had nothing to offer me anyway. At least I still have you.” Aaron’s smile deepened. “That’s the spirit.” He adjusted his clothes and glanced at the clock. “There is actually another reason I came back to Bluewave City.” Cassie looked at him curiously. “What reason?” “I came back for you, Cassie.” Her eyes widened slightly. Aaron took a breath, then continued, “But I also returned because I have to attend the National Medical Association banquet tonight.” Cassie immediately became interested. “The National Medical Association banquet?” “Yes.” Aaron straightened his jacket with a proud smile. “My family’s pharmaceutical group has developed something groundbreaking. Something that could completely change the medical industry.” “What is it?” “A cure for cancer.” Cassie froze. “A cure… for cancer?” Aaron nodded confidently. “That’s right. Until now, no pharmaceutical company has been able to produce a genuine cure. But my family’s researchers finally succeeded.” Cassie’s eyes filled with excitement. “That’s incredible!” “It is,” Aaron said. “And tonight, I’m going to present it to the president of the National Medical Association. If he endorses the drug, we’ll move forward with the official launch.” His eyes gleamed with ambition. “Once it reaches the market, the profits will be unimaginable. My family’s pharmaceutical group will become one of the most powerful companies in the industry almost overnight.” Cassie stared at him with admiration. “You’re amazing, Aaron.” She couldn’t help comparing him to Darius. One man was a retired soldier working as a janitor, barely able to support himself. The other was the heir to a powerful pharmaceutical empire who was about to introduce a revolutionary drug to the world. The difference couldn’t have been clearer. Aaron noticed the admiration in her eyes and decided it was time to take advantage of it. “Cassie, there’s something I’ve wanted to tell you for a long time.” She looked at him. “I know I hurt you when we broke up,” he said, his expression becoming sincere. “I made mistakes. I was young, selfish, and I didn’t appreciate what I had. I’ve regretted losing you ever since.” Cassie’s expression softened. “I came back because I realized you’re the woman I want beside me.” He gently took her hand. “And now that you’re finally free from that marriage, I don’t want to lose you again.” Cassie looked at him for several seconds before smiling. Aaron continued, “Once the drug launches, the returns will be enormous. I want you to invest with me. I’ll make sure you benefit from this opportunity. You won’t have to worry about your future anymore.” Cassie nodded without hesitation. “If it’s you, I trust you.” She stepped forward and hugged him. Aaron’s arms wrapped around her, but a faint, mischievous smile appeared on his face where she couldn’t see it. Everything was going exactly according to plan. Darius was gone. Cassie was back in his hands. And tonight’s banquet would be the perfect stage for the next part of his plan. “Get ready,” Aaron said as he gently pulled away from the embrace. “We have a banquet to attend.” Cassie smiled brightly. “Let’s go.”Latest Chapter
Maxwell Biden’s arrival
The guards were still laughing when the grand entrance suddenly opened again.A figure hurried out of the building, moving so quickly that several nearby guests turned to see what was happening. It was Maxwell Biden, the president of the National Medical Association.Unlike his usual composed appearance, Maxwell was breathing heavily, his suit slightly disheveled from rushing outside. The moment his eyes landed on Darius, his expression changed completely.“Sir!”He quickly walked toward him and stopped directly in front of Darius, lowering his head respectfully.“I apologize for keeping you waiting.”The laughter at the entrance instantly disappeared. The two guards stood frozen.Their jaws practically dropped as they stared at Maxwell. The man they had just been mocking was actually someone Maxwell Biden had personally come outside to receive. Worse still, the president wasn’t merely greeting him casually. He was addressing him with genuine respect.“Sir?”The first guard swallowed
The Nation Medical Association Banquet
That night, the National Medical Association banquet was held at the National Hall, the most prestigious event venue in Bluewave City. The enormous building had been transformed for the occasion, with elegant decorations, crystal chandeliers, expensive floral arrangements, and a red carpet stretching from the entrance to the main hall. Luxury cars continued arriving one after another as influential businessmen, renowned physicians, wealthy families, and prominent figures stepped onto the red carpet. This was an event where ordinary people had no place. The guests inside were among the richest and most influential individuals in the city, and simply receiving an invitation was considered a privilege. Then an old car slowly pulled up in front of the entrance.Darius stepped out.His car looked completely out of place among the rows of luxury vehicles surrounding the venue. To make matters worse, he was still wearing the same clothes he had worn at the hospital. He hadn’t had enough time
The Miracle Doctor II
Darius turned toward one of the nurses and calmly said, “Bring me sixteen acupuncture needles.”The nurse hesitated and instinctively looked at Daniel. She had never seen a janitor give medical instructions in a VIP ward, and Daniel’s expression made it clear that he wanted Darius gone.“Why are you still listening to him?” Daniel snapped. “He’s not a doctor.”Darius didn’t even look at him. “If you want him alive, bring me the needles.”Naomi immediately stepped forward. “Do it.”The nurse quickly retrieved sixteen sterile acupuncture needles and placed them on a tray. Darius then asked for a small container of black medicinal oil. Once it was brought to him, he carefully soaked the needles in the oil for several seconds before removing them one by one.Daniel watched with increasing disbelief.“What exactly do you think you’re doing?” he demanded.Darius ignored him and walked to the bed. He carefully removed Gabriel’s shirt, exposing the old patriarch’s chest and abdomen. His skin
The Miracle Doctor
Daniel’s expression changed the moment he recognized the man standing at the entrance. His eyes narrowed with immediate irritation as he stepped forward.“Darius, what are you doing here?”His voice carried the authority of someone who had long since forgotten that Darius was once his son-in-law. To Daniel, Darius was nothing more than an embarrassment who had somehow managed to remain attached to the Ashford family for three years.“Get out,” Daniel ordered coldly. “This is a VIP ward. What business does a janitor have here?”Darius ignored the insult and looked past him toward Gabriel Wen. The old patriarch’s breathing had become increasingly shallow, while the monitors continued to produce increasingly alarming readings.“I already told you,” Darius said calmly. “His condition is critical. If you don’t do something immediately, he won’t survive another five minutes.”Naomi’s attention immediately returned to him. Unlike Daniel, she didn’t care about Darius’s clothes or occupation.
The Wen Family
Darius left his mother’s ward after making sure the medical staff would continue monitoring her condition. She was still unconscious, but the faint rhythm of her heartbeat remained steady enough for him to leave temporarily. With the banquet only a few hours away, he needed to make preparations before heading there. More importantly, if Soulroot truly existed in Bluewave City, the banquet was his best opportunity to find it.He had barely walked past the VIP section of Hillcrest Hospital when a furious voice suddenly erupted from one of the private wards.“My father’s life is in danger, Mr. Ashford! What the hell are you doing?”The woman’s voice was sharp enough to silence the nurses standing outside the room. She sounded furious, but beneath her anger was unmistakable fear. Naomi Wen stood beside the hospital bed, her pale face tense as she stared at the man lying motionless beneath the sheets. Her father, Gabriel Wen, was the patriarch of the Wen family, one of the most influential
A Miraculous Doctor
Darius’s gaze remained fixed on his mother as he reached toward the medical table and picked up three acupuncture needles. The nurses immediately looked at him in confusion.“What are you doing?” one of them asked.Darius didn’t answer. He held the first needle between his fingers and carefully placed it in the center of his mother’s forehead. The second went into the area above her chest, while the third was inserted just below her navel. The staff members exchanged baffled looks. One of the nurses couldn’t hold back her laughter. “Is he seriously performing acupuncture on a dead woman?”Another shook her head. “He must have lost his mind from the shock.”“This is a modern hospital, not some ancient clinic,” a male staff member added mockingly. “What does he think three needles are going to accomplish?”Darius ignored every word.He stood beside the bed with his eyes closed, his breathing slowing as he concentrated. The room gradually fell silent as the staff realized he wasn’t going
