Chapter 1: The Smell of Sourdough and Sulfur

"One month," Henry Wallace muttered, wiping a streak of flour across his forehead. "Thirty days of kneading, proofing, and praying the oven doesn't explode. This is the dream, right?"

He looked around the cramped interior of The Hearthside Loaf. It was a modest shop on the edge of Oakhaven, a border town that smelled more of pine resin and desperation than anything else.

"Dream?" a raspy voice called out from the doorway. "You look like you’ve been wrestling with a mountain troll, Henry. And the troll is winning."

Henry looked up. Silas, the local woodcutter, was leaning against the frame, his axe slung over his shoulder.

"It’s four in the morning, Silas. Why are you here?"

"The woods are noisy tonight. Can't sleep. Besides, your starter smells better than my wife's cooking. Give me a roll?"

"We aren't open for another two hours," Henry said, gesturing to the cooling racks. "And those are for the morning rush. The guards need their carbs or they get cranky."

"Cranky? They’re terrified," Silas stepped inside, the floorboards groaning under his boots. "Haven’t you heard the talk at the tavern? The ruins out east are glowing again. The monsters are pushing closer to the walls."

Henry paused, his hands still buried in a bowl of rye dough. "I bake bread, Silas. I don’t fight monsters. If the walls fall, I’ll just be a baker in a different kingdom."

"You’re a cold one, Henry. Reincarnated from some land where everyone's heart is made of ice?"

Henry stiffened. Silas meant it as a joke, but the barb hit home. Henry didn't talk about his past—mostly because 'salaryman who died of overwork in a cubicle' wasn't a very heroic backstory.

"Just practical," Henry countered. "Now, if you want that roll, you’re going to have to wait. I’m short on the high-protein white flour. I need to go down to the cellar and haul up another sack."

"I'll help you for a discount," Silas offered, already moving toward the back.

"No," Henry said, a bit too quickly. "The cellar is... a mess. Stay here. Don’t touch the cooling rack."

Henry grabbed a flickering lantern and ducked through the narrow door behind the counter. He descended the stone steps, the temperature dropping with every foot he moved. The cellar was a cavernous space, far larger than the shop above it, but he’d only cleared a small corner for his supplies.

He reached the pile of flour sacks stacked against the far wall. As he grabbed the top bag, his foot caught on a heavy iron ring protruding from the floor.

"Dammit," he hissed, stumbling.

He set the lantern down and looked closer. He’d lived here for a month and hadn't noticed this. It was buried under a thick layer of dust and a rotting pallet he’d never bothered to move. He kicked the pallet aside, revealing a heavy, iron-bound trapdoor.

It wasn't just old. It was wrong.

The metal was etched with faint, glowing runes that hummed with a low, rhythmic vibration. It felt like a heartbeat.

"What in the hell...?"

He leaned down. A scent wafted through the cracks of the door—a sharp, stinging aroma that cut through the pleasant smell of fermented yeast from upstairs. It was sulfur. Thick, choking, and ancient.

A blue window flickered into existence in his peripheral vision.

[Notice: Proximity to 'The Sunken Larder' (Rank F Dungeon) detected.]

Henry blinked. "A dungeon? Under my shop? You’ve got to be kidding me."

[Skill Activation: Dungeon Kitchen (Rank F)]

[Status: Passive resonance detected. Ingredients within 10 meters are being infused with 'Dungeon Essence'.]

"Infused?" Henry whispered. He looked at the sacks of flour resting directly on top of the trapdoor. "I’ve been feeding the town dungeon-flavored bread for a month?"

The trapdoor shuddered. A faint, muffled roar echoed from deep below, vibrating through the soles of his boots. The runes flashed a violent crimson.

"Henry!" Silas yelled from upstairs. "You okay down there? Sounded like a shelf collapsed!"

"I’m fine!" Henry shouted back, his heart hammering against his ribs. "Just dropped a sack!"

He stared at the door. Every instinct told him to run. To grab his apron and leave Oakhaven tonight. But then he looked at the flour. He looked at the blue screen floating in front of him.

[Current Infusion Level: 2%]

[Effect: Minor Constitution Boost (Duration: 1 Hour)]

"It scales," Henry realized. "The longer it sits there, the stronger the effect."

He reached out and touched the iron ring. It was ice-cold, yet it bit into his skin with a searing energy. The hum grew louder, a deep thrum-thrum-thrum that seemed to synchronize with his own pulse.

"Henry! Seriously, it smells like a volcano just erupted in your kitchen!" Silas was at the top of the stairs now.

Henry grabbed a sack of flour and scrambled up the steps, slamming the cellar door behind him and throwing the bolt. He leaned against the wood, gasping for air.

Silas was standing in the kitchen, nose wrinkled. "Good gods, man. What do you have down there? A dead dragon?"

"Old pipes," Henry lied, his voice trembling. "Sulfur gas. I need to get the landlord to look at it."

"Smells more like the Abyss to me," Silas muttered, looking suspiciously at the door. "You sure you’re okay? You’re pale as a ghost."

"I'm fine, Silas. Just tired. Here." Henry grabbed a warm roll from the 'test' batch—one that had been sitting directly over the trapdoor for the last few hours. "Take it and go. I have work to do."

Silas took the roll, his eyes widening. "This is... heavier than usual."

"It's a new recipe," Henry said, pushing him toward the front door. "Get out. Come back at six if you want more."

He watched Silas leave, then turned back to the kitchen. The sun wasn't up yet, but the shop felt different. The air was charged.

He walked over to his workbench and dumped the fresh flour out. It looked normal, but when he ran his hands through it, he felt a tingle—like static electricity.

[User: Henry Wallace]

[Class: Dungeon Baker (Unique)]

[Current Task: Pre-Dawn Bake]

[Warning: Dungeon Seal is at 88% Integrity. Maintenance required.]

"Maintenance?" Henry groaned, throwing a handful of salt into the mix. "I don't even have a sword. I have a rolling pin and a very expensive oven."

He started to knead. He didn't use a mixer; he liked the feel of the dough changing under his palms. As he worked, he activated his skill.

"Dungeon Kitchen," he whispered.

The dough began to glow with a faint, amber light. The smell of sulfur disappeared, replaced by a deep, rich aroma that made his mouth water. It wasn't just sourdough anymore. It was something more primal.

[Item Created: Sturdy Sourdough (Quality: Uncommon)]

[Effect: Increases Physical Defense by 5 for 30 minutes.]

[Flavor Note: Earthy, with a hint of 'I will not die today'.]

"Five points of defense," Henry mused. "That’s the equivalent of wearing a light leather vest. From a piece of bread."

He looked at the cellar door. The humming hadn't stopped. If anything, it was getting more rhythmic, more insistent. The 'Sunken Larder'. What kind of dungeon was named a larder?

A knock came at the front door. Not Silas this time. This was a frantic, sharp rapping.

Henry sighed and walked to the front. He flipped the sign to 'Open' and pulled the door back.

A young girl stood there, no older than eighteen. Her leather armor was scuffed, and her cloak was torn at the hem. She was shaking, her face streaked with soot.

"Please," she gasped. "The Alchemist’s shop is closed, and the Temple won't open until sunrise. Do you have anything? Anything at all?"

"Slow down," Henry said, his baker’s instincts taking over. "What's the matter?"

"My party... we were in the ruins. A trap went off. I'm the only one who got out, but I'm—I'm so weak. I can't even hold my dagger." She leaned against the doorframe, her knees buckling.

Henry caught her by the arm. "You’re lucky. I just finished a test batch."

He led her to a stool and went back to the rack. He grabbed the 'Sturdy Sourdough' roll he’d just pulled from the small oven. It was still steaming.

"Eat this," he commanded.

"I don't need food, I need a potion!" she cried, her voice cracking.

"You need both, but I only have the bread. Eat. It’s on the house."

The girl looked at the roll. The smell seemed to hit her like a physical force. She grabbed it with trembling hands and took a massive bite.

Henry watched her closely.

For a second, nothing happened. Then, the girl’s eyes went wide. A faint amber shimmer rippled across her skin. The shaking stopped. Her posture straightened, and the color returned to her cheeks.

"What is this?" she whispered, staring at the half-eaten roll. "I feel... solid. Like I’m made of stone."

[Notice: Skill Synergy successful. Customer satisfaction: High.]

[Dungeon Essence absorbed: +1]

Henry leaned over the counter, his eyes narrowed. "It’s just sourdough, kid. Now, tell me about those ruins. How far are they from my basement?"

The girl didn't answer. She was looking at her hands, clenching her fists. "I feel like I could take a hit from a mace and keep walking."

"Good," Henry said, his mind racing. "Because I think the thing in my cellar is about to start knocking back."

As if on cue, a heavy thud echoed from the floorboards beneath them. It wasn't a vibration this time. It was a strike. Something was hitting the bottom of the trapdoor.

The girl jumped. "What was that?"

"The oven," Henry said, though his heart was screaming. "It’s a bit temperamental. You should probably go find the guards now."

"Wait! I need more of this! My name is Elara, I—"

"Go, Elara!" Henry ushered her out and slammed the door.

He turned back to the empty shop. The sulfur smell was back, stronger than ever. He walked to the middle of the room and stared at the spot on the floor where he knew the trapdoor lay beneath the wood.

"I just wanted to bake bread," he whispered to the empty room.

The floorboards groaned. A thin wisp of black smoke curled up through a gap in the wood.

[Warning: Dungeon Breach Imminent.]

[Time to First Wave: 05:59...]

Henry looked at his rolling pin. He looked at his oven. Then, he looked at the sack of 'Infused' flour.

"Fine," he snapped, grabbing his apron. "If you’re going to ruin my morning bake, you’re going to be part of the recipe."

He headed back toward the cellar door, but he didn't open it. He started grabbing every spice, every herb, and every heavy kitchen utensil he owned. If his kitchen was a dungeon, then he was the boss.

And no one messed with the boss’s sourdough.
