Renvar Xuandian died a nobody, only to be reborn in a world where strength is everything. Armed with a snarky System and a cultivation manual everyone calls 'Suicidal Trash,' Renvar prepares for a life of mediocrity. However, the manual isn't trash—it's a specialized weapon designed to slay an entity so terrifying that the gods themselves erased its name. Alongside Yuexia Linruo, the only survivor who knows the truth, Renvar must survive his own power before it consumes him.

Chapter 1

The ceiling was wrong. That was Renvar’s first thought as his eyes flickered open, struggling against a heavy, rhythmic thumping behind his temples. Instead of the familiar, water-stained popcorn ceiling of his cramped apartment, he was staring at dark wooden beams, intricately carved with patterns of swirling clouds and soaring cranes. The air didn't smell like stale coffee and old laundry; it smelled of sandalwood, dried ink, and something sharp—like the ozone before a thunderstorm.

"Ugh, my head..." Renvar groaned, trying to push himself up. His arms felt like lead, his skin buzzing with an unnatural electricity. "Where the hell am I? Did I get hit by a bus? No, wait. It was a stapler. A falling box of staplers? God, that's a pathetic way to go."

[Ding! Connection established. Soul synchronization at 0.4%. Checking host vitals...]

Renvar froze. The voice wasn't in the room; it was echoing inside his skull, vibrating against his teeth.

"Who’s there?" he snapped, his voice cracking. He looked around the room—a spacious, minimalist chamber filled with silk hangings and antique furniture. "Is this a prank? If this is some viral hidden camera thing, I’m not in the mood."

[Host detected. Name: Renvar Xuandian. Previous occupation: Professional couch potato and low-tier data entry drone. Cause of death: Choked on a grape while reading a w******l. Truly a legendary end for a legendary nobody.]

"Hey! It was a very large grape!" Renvar shouted at the empty air, his face flushing. "And wait, Renvar Xuandian? That’s not my name. I’m just Renvar. What is this, a transmigration thing? Did I actually get isekai’d?"

[Correct. Though, calling it an 'upgrade' would be an insult to the word. You have successfully inhabited the body of the youngest scion of the Xuandian Clan. A man whose talent is so abysmal that even the local stray dogs look down on him.]

"Wow, okay. Thanks for the ego boost, Siri’s evil twin," Renvar muttered, swinging his legs over the side of the bed. He looked at his hands—they were paler, more elegant, but he could feel the lack of strength in the fingers. "So, what’s the play here? Do I get a cheat? A god-slaying sword? A harem of seven-foot-tall warrior queens?"

[You get a manual. And honestly? It’s more than you deserve.]

"A manual? Like a car repair guide? Or a 'How to Cultivate for Dummies'?"

[Hardly. Initiating soul-bind for the 'Heaven-Burning Ash' Scripture.]

Renvar blinked. "Heaven-Burning Ash? That sounds... actually kind of cool. Is it a top-tier fire technique? Can I throw suns at people?"

[It is widely regarded as the single most useless technique in the history of the Azure Cloud Domain. It burns the user's soul to produce embers. Most practitioners don't survive the first week. It’s essentially a very elaborate, very painful way to commit suicide.]

"Wait, wait, wait!" Renvar scrambled back, his heels digging into the soft rugs. "If it's garbage, why are you giving it to me? Give me the 'Dragon God' thing! Or the 'Immortal Sword' whatever! I don't want to be ash!"

[Binding initiated. No refunds. No exchanges. Enjoy the burn, loser.]

"Stop! Cancel! Alt-F4! Unsubscribe!"

Renvar’s scream was cut short as a white-hot spike of agony driven through his forehead. It felt as though someone had poured molten lead directly into his brain. He collapsed onto the floor, his back arching, his fingers clawing at the wooden floorboards. Visions of a grey, desolate wasteland filled his mind—a world of falling soot and cold cinders.

"Make it... stop..." he wheezed, the words barely a whisper. "It feels like... my blood is boiling..."

[It’s not your blood, Host. It’s your soul being re-forged into a furnace. Don't die yet; the neighbors will complain about the smell of burnt trash.]

Renvar gritted his teeth, his vision swimming in shades of charcoal and orange. He could feel the information carving itself into his essence—strange symbols, breathing patterns, the way to circulate the thin, wispy energy of the world. It wasn't like a memory; it was like a new limb he hadn't known he possessed.

Minutes—or perhaps hours—passed. The pain receded to a dull, throbbing ache. Renvar lay on the floor, soaked in sweat, his chest heaving.

"You... you're a real piece of work, you know that?" Renvar panted, staring at the ceiling. "I'm going to find your off-switch and flip it with a hammer."

[If you have the energy to complain, you have the energy to cultivate. Sit up. Try the first cycle. Or don't, and let the residual energy turn your internal organs into charcoal. Your choice.]

"Fine! God, you're pushy," Renvar groaned. He pushed himself into a cross-legged position, his movements shaky. "So, I just... breathe in, follow the 'Ash' path, and don't die? Sounds easy. Totally manageable."

[Try not to blow yourself up. I’d hate to have to find a new host so soon. It’s a pain to clean the spiritual residue off the walls.]

Renvar ignored the voice and closed his eyes. He visualized the grey embers the manual described. He reached out into the air, feeling the 'Qi'—the life force of the world. It felt cold, but as he pulled it into his chest, the Heaven-Burning Ash technique acted like a flint.

Spark.

A tiny flicker of heat ignited in his solar plexus.

"Oh, I feel it!" Renvar whispered, a grin breaking through his exhaustion. "It’s working! It’s actually—wait. Why is it getting so hot?"

[Host, your control is pathetic. You’re drawing in too much. Stop.]

"I can't! It’s like a vacuum!" Renvar’s eyes snapped open. His skin was beginning to glow with a dull, reddish light. "How do I turn it off? How do I—"

The air in the room began to shimmer. The sandalwood scent was replaced by the acrid stench of smoke. The wooden floorboards beneath him began to char, turning black in a perfect circle around his legs.

"System! Help! I'm melting! I'm literally melting!"

[Stabilize your core, you idiot! Focus the heat into your dantian, don't let it leak!]

"I'm trying! It’s like trying to hold a tiger by the tail!" Renvar roared, his hands trembling as he clutched his stomach.

The heat reached a breaking point. A shockwave of dry, searing wind erupted from Renvar's body. The silk hangings caught fire instantly, and the paper screens of the windows disintegrated into grey flakes. A loud CRACK echoed through the room as a support beam splintered.

"Oh, boy," Renvar muttered, staring at the small fire now spreading across his bedsheets. "That... that wasn't supposed to happen, right?"

[Congratulations. You managed to achieve the first stage of the technique. You also managed to destroy fifty percent of your living quarters. Truly, your talent for destruction is your only redeeming quality.]

Renvar coughed, waving away a cloud of soot. "Shut up. I'm alive, aren't I? I’m a cultivator. I’m a—"

He stopped. The door to his chamber, or what was left of it after the blast, had been thrown open. The smoke was clearing, settling into a fine layer of grey dust on the floor.

Standing in the doorway was a woman. She was dressed in flowing robes of pale blue and white, her hair tied back with a silver ribbon. She looked like she had stepped out of a painting—ethereal, cold, and breathtakingly beautiful. But it was her eyes that caught Renvar. They weren't filled with anger or shock at the state of the room.

They were filled with an overwhelming, crushing sense of pity.

"Renvar?" she asked, her voice like the chime of a silver bell, though it carried a heavy weight.

"Uh, hey," Renvar said, awkwardly wiping soot off his forehead. "I can explain the room. I was just... experimenting? You must be... Yuexia Linruo?"

The name had surfaced from the body’s fragmented memories. She was his fiancée—a genius of the sect, a woman far beyond his reach.

Yuexia Linruo stepped into the room, her boots crunching on the charred wood. She looked at the grey ash coating the walls, then back at Renvar. She didn't move to help him up. She just sighed, a sound so full of sorrow it made Renvar’s chest ache.

"You actually did it," she whispered. "You practiced that cursed manual. I told you it was a death sentence, Renvar. Why didn't you listen?"

"Listen, it's not that bad," Renvar said, trying to sound casual despite the fact that his sleeves were still smoldering. "I feel... okay. A bit warm, maybe, but—"

"You don't understand," she interrupted, her voice trembling slightly. She stepped closer, reaching out as if to touch his face, but pulling her hand back at the last second. "The Heaven-Burning Ash... it doesn't give you power for free. It consumes the candle to make the light brighter."

Renvar felt a cold pit form in his stomach. "What are you talking about?"

Yuexia Linruo looked him straight in the eyes, her expression one of profound grief. "I can see your life essence, Renvar. It’s flickering. It’s burning away."

"How long?" Renvar asked, his voice suddenly very small.

Yuexia Linruo closed her eyes for a moment, then looked at him with a gaze that felt like a funeral shroud.

"Three years," she said. "If you continue this path, you have exactly three years to live. After that... there won't even be a soul left to reincarnate. There will be nothing but ash."

Renvar sat there, surrounded by the ruins of his room, the System's mocking silence ringing in his ears.

"Three years?" he repeated, a hollow laugh escaping his throat. "Well. I guess I'd better make them count."
