The dread that was to come since they left the camp has finally descended. The glow of the Sun felt chilly as they took measured and muffled breaths.

“Let's go" the patrol whispered.

They continued the walk silently, paying attention to shadows and the ruffling of leaves. Although they seemed slower, they covered much more ground than earlier. The Sun got to the midpoint as the journey continued, that was until they got out of the area fill with those oversized trees.

Everyone sighed in relief except the patrol.

"We've gotten through that, this is where most people die” the patrol said his eyes filled with dread.

“Don't think I was sent to lead or protect you. I was also exiled, so it's each man for himself. I won't risk my life to save you but I advise that you risk your lives to save me else you'd be stranded in this terror." The patrol said as he looked from face to face.

He looked away from their faces and said “Let's continue.”

“This place is filled with snakes and some are venomous.” The patrol continued as they walked

“Sometimes, vines are not vines.” He said as he used his wooden spear to move a vine that suddenly attacked back but he swatted it away.

"Be careful.” He said and he didn't speak again.

Everyone looked around vigilantly. Looking at the ground they stepped on, at the vines hanging overhead, at the shaking leaves not knowing what will jump out. It was hell.

They continued without much of an option, the sinking of the Sun indicating the time and the stinging of their stomachs indicating their long gone strength.

"Please sir!” One of members of the group said "can we rest a bit and maybe find something to eat? We have not eaten anything for over a day”

"That's true sir, please!" Other members echoed.

"You can rest but I won't wait for you.” The patrol said as he continued to walk.

Left with no choice, they all pulled their tired bodies after him.

"We must cover as much ground during the day, time to rest will come.” The patrol said without looking back, trying to encourage them.

Looking at the sinking Sun, they were spurred on also hoping for it to sink faster. Due to exhaustion, their vigilance weaken and all they thought of was the rest to come at nightfall.

“Hey! Don't move your feet!" Victor shouted to woman, she looked sickly, her hair scanty and grey.

Due to shock and the authority he shouted with, the woman froze.

“Look down and slowly move your raised leg backwards." Victor said when he saw she stopped.

She looked down and saw the body of a snake well blended with the mottled green grass. Sweat dripped down from her forehead to her eyes but that didn't bother her.

She moved her leg as slowly as she could, trying not to startle the snake. After she got to safety, she took a deep breath as she said thank you to Victor who nodded in response.

Reminded of where they were, their vigilance heightened despite their tired bodies.

The most anticipated nightfall came but they did not relax their vigilance.

"Let's find somewhere to rest.” The patrol said as he looked around.

Still with the same level of vigilance, relief filled their hearts as they slowed down and looked around for a place to spend the night.

A place was found not close to the bushes or the trees and they chose that place. Everyone gathered as they cleared the area, picking up broken twigs, stones and other of such things.

"We will occupy here till morning, don't go too far in case of danger.” The patrol said after everywhere was clear.

“Also, some need to take turns keeping watch through the night. When you're settled those will should come to me.”

The patrol concludes as he sat on the cleared grass in the middle of their temporary camp.

Following the trend of the patrol, some sat on the grass while others laid down directly, exhaustion written all over their faces.

Unconsciously, people gathered with those they were familiar with, so also the Goodwills.

Victor knew his wife would never admit weakness, especially when others are there but he still asked.

"Are you alright Ness?” Victor asked worriedly as he looked at his wife's tired face.

"Oh please Victor! I'm not that fragile.” Vanessa responded with a smug look, still unable to hide the weariness in her eyes.

He pulled her into his arms as she rested her head on his chest, slightly squeezing her arm to reassure her of his presence. As though understanding his message, Vanessa rubbed her head on his chest.

After catching his breath, he looked at his wife whose eyes were closed and began to think.

‘This area is not looking familiar at all but the danger level is still bearable. The animals, well the snakes we saw although I can't name them, I'm sure I've seen them before. Looking at it logically, we can get through this phase alive.’ He thought as he rested.

A while later, Robert and Katie move towards Victor. Getting closer, they noticed Vanessa who was asleep.

“Victor" Robert whispered

"Yes, Uncle." Victor responded also whispering

"About volunteering, what do you think?” Robert continued, still keeping his voice low.

“We have to volunteer, we don't have much of a choice. By our numbers, we make up about half of the people here.” Victor responded without much thought.

“I thought so too. The more important question is how many people are we sending and who.” Robert retorted.

Victor sighed, as though tired of thinking.

“Who can we send?" Victor asked

“There are 14 of us here, seven males and seven females. Everyone is willing to volunteer." Katie responded intelligently.

"The Goodwills are not ones to be laid back” Victor responded with pride.

"Nathan, RJ, George and I would be the volunteers. Four of us will be enough the rest of you stay alert even as you rest.” Victor continued after a bit of thinking.

"Why do you have to go? Gregory can replace you.” Robert asked not understanding Victor's decision.

"We need information and that patrol is a source of it. I'm joining the volunteers for this purpose.” Victor replied Robert.

"We can't know too much, especially now when we don't know anything” Victor said degectedly.

“What could it be Victor?!” Frida shouted, eyes filled with tears and her heart filled with concern. The others also stared at him, waiting for his response.“Remember the old man from the safe zone?” Victor asked as he looked back at themThey all hummed and nodded in response to his question. “He spoke about an awakening mark that shows up after the body has adapted to the environment the meteor crystals created.” Victor continued." Comparing the length of the mark on Gregory's neck to what he described," Victor paused as he stretched his thumb and measured the mark.“It's about a third of the length of my thumb. That aligns with what he said.” Victor said with a bit of certainty.“But he didn't say anything about the mark glowing." Robert said, although nodding in agreement to Victor's hypothesis. Victor shrugged his shoulders, also clueless about the reason for the glow.“We'll ask Karl when we see him later." Robert said as he moved back to where he originally was sitting.“B

Natasha and Katie returned to where the food was prepared; they didn't know what to say to Vanessa or Frida that would bring comfort. They all sat in silence, with the occasional sound of eating coming from Caleb and Robert. A while later, the pain reduced for both Victor and Gregory. They both were able to sit up, this brought a hint of joy to Vanessa and Frida. Although Robert and Caleb knew that they were not going to die from the blows they received, they were still happy that they were getting better relatively quickly. “Thank you Greg." Victor said to Gregory who also sat up. His face communicated a whole lot of emotions but his mouth did not say any other thing. Gregory tried to smile but the pain from his jaw gave a sharp reminder. " We are family Victor, you'd have done the same.” Gregory whispered, trying not to overexert his jaw. Victor stared at him for a bit and nodded. He then pulled out six crystals from somewhere in his clothes and stretched it to Robert. Rob

“Victor!!!" Nathan also shouted. Nathan, George and Gregory ran after Vanessa to Victor. George stood face to face with the guard that hit Victor. His eyes red with anger, his fist clenched as Gregory held him back. " What?!” The guard said as he punched Gregory on his jaw. Nathan and George, shocked by his move, also attempted to strike back. “You want to make a move?!" The guard said as he brought forward his spear, which was previously hanging on his back, threateningly. On seeing this, the other guards and members of the Goodwill family ran towards them. The guards stood together and the Goodwills gathered around Victor and Gregory who were both on the ground. Compared to the five guards standing together, the twelve members of the Goodwill family looked more menacing, not counting the two on the ground. " Caleb! Don't do anything rash!” Robert said through grit teeth as he held Caleb, stopping him from rushing towards the guard. “He hit my son Robert! He hit my Gregor

Three days went by in a flash. The routine didn't change much. Early in the morning the Goodwills had a review of the previous day, compiling things they should start doing, things they should stop doing and things they should take note of. They will then go out to search for crystals. They noticed that crystals were almost impossible to find in places they had searched the previous day, so they had to change search grounds daily. They discovered this on the second day of their search. Due to this, they did not exchange for enough food that night. At the end of the day, after it was almost dark, they returned to the camp to exchange crystal for food and cook it. During which they would renew their ‘sleeping ground’ permit. Apparently, they could keep staying in the same spot every night; they just had to ensure it was renewed before it got dark. On the first day, they found three crystals. They exchanged one for food and the remaining two were used to renew their sleeping ground

“About your superpower, how much information do you have? What exactly is your power about" Robert asked as Victor got beside him. " Well, it is a house.” Victor answered matter-of-factly. “What is a house?" Robert asked back almost instinctively " My superpower is a house. I can summon a house, you can call it a shelter too.” Victor answered. Robert stared at Victor lost in thought after hearing Victor's answer. “Don't think too far, it's not a skyscraper or anything of that sort. It's a simple house, like a bungalow." Victor quickly said as he noticed the absurd smile on Robert's face. " Okay it is a house.” Robert said as he nodded. " It is a house!” Robert repeated, understanding what it meant for the Goodwill family. Robert let out a loud laugh. " That means we'll have our own space. We’ll have some level of security. We can focus on just exchanging for food while we invest the remaining crystals in other things.” Robert said, almost shouting. He held Victor by his sho

The food was served and they ate quickly, ensuring not to choke. Water was also rationed for each person. “Eat faster George! I'm supposed to use the plate after you.” Gregory urged making an obvious show of his discomfort.Vanessa walked slowly to Victor's side and sat.“I served both of our food together, let's eat.” She said looking at her husband. That refined aura spoke volumes of his life's experiences. Although not in a three-piece suit, not properly groomed and not well rested, he still showed that aura.“Thank you." Victor responded weakly, the fatigue finally kicking in." There's no need for thanks between us. I've told you time and time again.” Vanessa responded."Should I feed you?” Vanessa asked with a teasing smile on her lips."You know I won't let you.”Victor said, almost rolling his eyes.Vanessa chuckled in response. The going and coming continued for a while as everyone tried to get food into their stomach. As more and more people finished eating, the utensils wer
