Chapter 1
chapter one
The banquet hall glowed beneath warm golden lights, its marble floors reflecting the soft shimmer of antique murals and sculptures arranged with almost ceremonial care. The Goodwill family filled the room with hushed conversations and polite laughter. At the high table, Robert Goodwill, broad-shouldered with a thinning hairline and a voice that could carry through storms, rose to his feet. “Everyone,” he called, the smooth baritone slicing through the chatter, “may I have your attention?” The room stilled. Robert let the quiet settle before he began. “Every human life has a peak,” he said. “For some, it’s something earth-shaking, like the man who first stepped on the moon. For others, it’s wealth, fame, recognition. Whatever form it takes, a peak is still a peak, and it deserves to be honored.” He paused, scanning familiar faces, siblings, nieces, nephews, each one attentive. “Today,” Robert continued, “we celebrate a man whose peak keeps rising. A brother to some, a father to two, a son to some of blessed memory, a mentor to all and a husband to one amazing woman who still refuses to share him with anyone.” Subtle laughter rippled across the room. “Victor Goodwill,” Robert said, smiling, “has always tested the limits of what excellence looks like. Childhood competitions, debate trophies, academic honors. He’s been stacking wins since he could walk. He earned an international scholarship, graduated top of his class, secured his master’s degree, and kept pushing.” He gestured proudly at Victor’s wife. “And before I forget, the Goodwills are still multiplying their victories. Katie is almost done with her doctorate at an Ivy League school, though Caleb still pretends not to hear me when I brag.” Caleb groaned under his breath. Robert grinned. “But back to the man of the hour,” Robert said, lifting his glass. “Victor just concluded a multinational deal that has earned recognition far beyond our borders. That is not luck” he paused. “That is excellence!” e raised his glass higher. “To Victor!” A wave of cheers burst through the hall as Victor rose, smiling, bowing politely, trying but failing to hide the pride tugging at his expression. The celebration resumed with renewed energy. Relatives approached Victor with handshakes, hugs, and warm words. Waiters weaved between tables with trays of wine and pastries. Vanessa, in a shimmering cosmic-blue gown, drifted through the crowd like a star, accepting compliments with modest grace. “You look stunning, dear,” Aunt May said, admiring her. “It’s all Victor’s moment,” Vanessa replied. “Oh please,” May teased, “every successful man has a woman reminding him when to breathe.” Vanessa laughed and changed the subject before May could continue. Across the hall, Caleb nudged his twin brother. “You love dragging Katie’s achievements in everyone’s face.” “Who, me?” Robert scoffed. “I’m subtle.” “You shout.” “Well, that too.” The air was bright, warm, full of life. The Goodwills lived up to their name: harmony, laughter, kinship. Until the lights flickered. Once. Twice. Then darkness. Conversations halted. Chairs scraped softly. A few gasps echoed. “What the hell?” Caleb muttered to Robert. “Don’t look at me,” Robert whispered back. “This wasn’t part of the plan.” Victor pulled out his phone ‘no signal. What happened?’ he thought. Around the hall, others did the same, murmuring anxiously. A few teens ran to the windows. “The sky is still blue!” a little boy shouted. “Very scientific,” Vanessa said gently, hiding her tension. Robert signaled to Caleb and both hurried toward the exit. Minutes later, they returned looking pale and shaken. Victor approached them immediately. “What’s wrong?” Robert’s voice dropped. “Don’t react loudly. W-we can’t leave.” Victor frowned. “What do you mean?” “Exactly what it sounds like,” Caleb said. “We walk toward the exit and suddenly, we’re ten steps back. Every time. We counted.” Victor stared at them, waiting for the punchline. There wasn’t one. “Let me try.” He strode to the door, jaw set. Five steps. Six. Seven And in an instant, he was ten steps away again. His heart dropped. He tried again. And again. The same result. He returned to his uncles, shoulders heavy. “It’s real.” The three stood in grim silence, the edges of panic creeping in. “Should we tell them?” Victor whispered. “They’ll find out soon,” Robert said, “whether we want them to or not.” Aunt May approached, worry etched into her face. “What’s happening?” Robert stumbled over his words. “I-it’s nothing. Just a small issue” She knew him too well. Without exposing him, she turned to the others and said lightly, “Don’t mind them. The ‘men’ are sorting things out.” But whispers spread. The atmosphere thickened. Then the world shifted. The colors drained from the room, fading like wet paint being washed away. A low hum vibrated through the floor. The air tightened, thick and electric. A blinding flash erupted from the exit door, swallowing the hall whole. Screams, gasps, hands shielding faces then. Then nothing. Just white. And silence. ---

The Goodwills: Adventure in an Apocalyptic World Chapter fifteen
Three days went by in a flash. The routine didn't change much. Early in the morning the Goodwills had a review of the previous day, compiling things they should start doing, things they should stop doing and things they should take note of. They will then go out to search for crystals. They noticed that crystals were almost impossible to find in places they had searched the previous day, so they had to change search grounds daily. They discovered this on the second day of their search. Due to this, they did not exchange for enough food that night. At the end of the day, after it was almost dark, they returned to the camp to exchange crystal for food and cook it. During which they would renew their ‘sleeping ground’ permit. Apparently, they could keep staying in the same spot every night; they just had to ensure it was renewed before it got dark. On the first day, they found three crystals. They exchanged one for food and the remaining two were used to renew their sleeping ground

The Goodwills: Adventure in an Apocalyptic World Chapter fourteen
“About your superpower, how much information do you have? What exactly is your power about" Robert asked as Victor got beside him. " Well, it is a house.” Victor answered matter-of-factly. “What is a house?" Robert asked back almost instinctively " My superpower is a house. I can summon a house, you can call it a shelter too.” Victor answered. Robert stared at Victor lost in thought after hearing Victor's answer. “Don't think too far, it's not a skyscraper or anything of that sort. It's a simple house, like a bungalow." Victor quickly said as he noticed the absurd smile on Robert's face. " Okay it is a house.” Robert said as he nodded. " It is a house!” Robert repeated, understanding what it meant for the Goodwill family. Robert let out a loud laugh. " That means we'll have our own space. We’ll have some level of security. We can focus on just exchanging for food while we invest the remaining crystals in other things.” Robert said, almost shouting. He held Victor by his sho

The food was served and they ate quickly, ensuring not to choke. Water was also rationed for each person. “Eat faster George! I'm supposed to use the plate after you.” Gregory urged making an obvious show of his discomfort.Vanessa walked slowly to Victor's side and sat.“I served both of our food together, let's eat.” She said looking at her husband. That refined aura spoke volumes of his life's experiences. Although not in a three-piece suit, not properly groomed and not well rested, he still showed that aura.“Thank you." Victor responded weakly, the fatigue finally kicking in." There's no need for thanks between us. I've told you time and time again.” Vanessa responded."Should I feed you?” Vanessa asked with a teasing smile on her lips."You know I won't let you.”Victor said, almost rolling his eyes.Vanessa chuckled in response. The going and coming continued for a while as everyone tried to get food into their stomach. As more and more people finished eating, the utensils wer

The Goodwills: Adventure in an Apocalyptic World Chapter twelve
The Goodwills came together and began their return journey back to the camp, hoping for the safety of Nathan and the two others. They moved quickly and didn't pause for anything.Seeing the camp ahead, their worries did not reduce at all. “We did not meet them on the way, I hope they're in the camp" Victor muttered under his breath. " The rest of you wait here, Victor and I will go into the camp to search for them.” Robert said as they approached the camp entrance.Understanding why he suggested that, the look of worry did not reduce from their faces, instead it increased. Robert signalled to Katie and she came over. “If we're not back before it's totally dark, move away from here and find somewhere safe to spend the night. We'll find you when we get out." Robert whispered to Katie as he sneakily handed the remaining crystals to her.As though making some kind of resolve, Robert straightened his back and looked at Victor." Let's go” Robert said. They walked into the camp steadily

The Goodwills: Adventure in an Apocalyptic World Chapter eleven
“Victor!” “Victor!!" “Victor!!!" Victor heard his name being called but he could get who exactly was calling him. He tried to open his eyes but he couldn't. He felt darkness around him as he floated in the darkness. The darkness lightened up as he felt a building in the darkness. It was a simple house made entirely of wood, with only a door at the front of it, a window on both sides and nothing but the wall at the back. The roof was the regular upside-down v and underneath was a wooden floorboard. Strangely, the house was greyish, like an unavailable Option on a computer. As Victor paid attention to it, information filled his mind. Digesting the information, he understood what was going on. The house is his golden finger but it's not fully activated yet, he needs to absorb more meteor crystals before it can be activated. ‘So that's it!’ Victor thought after understanding what's going on, ‘How do I get back?’. As though being pulled out of water, Victor felt like he was

The Goodwills: Adventure in an Apocalyptic World Chapter ten
The camp quieted down as the fatigue of the day overcame his desire to think. Victor and the others quickly fell asleep. For the first time in a while, the night felt long. They all felt fully rested as sounds of people moving about stirred them awake.Victor sat up, rubbing his sore shoulder as he looked around. Men and women alike were going about their business. Some sat before fires as they warned themselves up, some were fully armed, preparing to go out. Some sat together, discussing in hushed tones. The day had begun, and no one was slack. As he looked, Victor noticed Karl walking towards him. “Good morning." Karl said as he got closer“Oh, you acknowledge that this is a good morning" Robert, who was not too far from Victor, resorted.Karl chuckled as he sat beside Victor. Victor waited as He thought for a bit before he began.“I've not heard much about the frontier but I've always known the treatment is worse than at the safe zone. Our advantage here is our numbers but that's
