The next morning, Declan walked down the central corridor of Sawyer's Dynamics' technology, carrying a crate of cable wires.

Ding.

The private executive elevator chimed at the end of the hall. The brass doors slid open to reveal Nala’s personal assistant, holding a thick leather folder.

"Declan," she said, her tone dripping with contempt. "Miss Nala wants you in her corner office. Now."

Declan set the crate on a side table and stepped into the elevator. When he reached the top floor, the heavy mahogany doors of Nala’s suite were already standing wide open.

The office smelled suffocatingly sweet, filled with three massive, extravagant arrangements of white orchids with Brody's name on the card.

Nala sat behind her glass desk in a tailored charcoal suit, dark circles beneath her tired eyes, but her face was carved from granite.

Sitting on the leather sofa across from her was Martha, sipping tea from a delicate china cup, and Ethan Nala’s younger brother who was aggressively tossing a solid brass paperweight up and down in his palm.

"Sit down, Declan," Nala said without raising her gaze from her laptop.

Declan stood his ground in the center of the room. "I'll stand. What do you need, Nala?"

Nala slammed her laptop shut and slid a thick, stapled legal document across the polished glass desk.

"That is a formal Transfer of Intellectual Property and Technical Rights," she declared, her voice devoid of a single drop of warmth. "Brody ’s father made it very clear this morning. Cromwell Capital will inject fifty million dollars into Sawyer Dynamics by Friday. But old Mr. Cromwell has one non-negotiable condition."

She tapped a red-manicured fingernail against the top page.

"You must forfeit every legal, historical, and technical claim to the Aegis Core system. You will sign an affidavit stating you were merely a paid hourly maintenance contractor with zero input in the architecture."

Declan looked at the paper, then locked eyes with his wife. The sheer brutality of the betrayal hit him like a physical punch to the chest.

"A paid contractor?" He asked, his quiet voice cutting straight through the room. "Nala, I spent fourteen months sitting in our freezing garage coding that core. I didn't sleep for three days when we hit the memory leak crisis in March. I built that system line by line for you."

BANG!

Martha slammed her china cup onto the glass coffee table, sending warm tea splashing over the gold trim.

"Shut your ungrateful mouth!" Martha shrieked, her face contorting in rage. "You typed what Nala dictated to you! You were nothing more than a glorified typist! An uneducated, low-class contractor trying to steal credit from real visionaries like Brody!"

Ethan scoffed from the couch. "Face reality, man. You’re an IT guy. You carry ethernet cables. Don't act like a tech genius just because you know how to reboot a router."

Declan ignored the noise. His eyes remained fixed on Nala, "Is that what I am to you now?"

Nala's breath hitched for a fraction of a second. A flicker of something crossed her eyes, but it vanished instantly behind a wall of cold ambition. She turned her head away, looking out the floor-to-ceiling window at the city skyline below.

"Reality doesn't care about background work, Declan," Nala muttered coldly, her back turned to him. "It only cares about results. Brody has the power to elevate this company to the top. You don't."

The heavy office doors swung open with a smooth, confident push. Brody Cromwell strolled into the room, wearing an impeccably tailored double-breasted suit and carrying two velvet jewelry boxes. He flashed a warm smile at Martha, nodded to Ethan, and then walked directly into Declan's personal space.

He reached inside his jacket, pulled out a thick paper envelope, and tossed it casually onto the desk right over the legal document. A thick stack of five-hundred-dollar cash bills spilled across the glass.

"Consider it a consultant tip, Declan," Brody mocked, his deep voice thick with pity. "Five hundred bucks cash. Take it, sign the paper, and I’ll even let you stay on as a nighttime server room janitor during our launch week. Out of pure charity."

Brody stepped closer, clapping a heavy, condescending hand onto Declan's shoulder, squeezing firmly. "We all know a parasite like you needs the pocket money."

Declan slowly turned his head. He looked down at Brody ’s heavy hand, then raised his dark eyes to meet Brody’s.

A chilling, lethal intensity radiated from Declan, the silent pressure of a predator pushed to its absolute boundary.

Brody ’s arrogant grin faltered. His throat tightened, an instinctual wave of fear washing over him. Slowly, unnerved by Declan's absolute lack of flinching, Brody’s hand slid off Declan's shoulder, his fingers twitching in sudden agitation.

Declan looked back down at the document. He never needed the money nor the recognition. He did everything for the woman he loved, he just never expected her to sacrifice his hard work on the altar of ambition.

He picked up the pen from the desk. With fast, bold strokes, Declan signed his name at the bottom of the surrender agreement, officially erasing his existence from the history of his own masterpiece.

He dropped the pen onto the glass desk. It rolled once and knocked against Brody 's stack of cash.

"Congratulations, Brody ," Declan said, his tone utterly empty. "It’s all yours."

Brody swallowed hard, scrambling to regain his pompous composure. He quickly opened one of the velvet boxes he had brought, pulling out a blinding, multi-carat diamond necklace. He walked over to Nala draping the cold diamonds around her neck while completely ignoring Declan as if he were already invisible.

"A celebration gift for the future to commemorate our partnership" Brody announced grandly.

Nala gasped, her fingers brushing the glittering diamonds, a dazzling smile breaking across her face as she looked at Brody with deep admiration.

Oh, my goodness!" Martha squealed, abandoning her tea cup and practically throwing herself off the sofa. She rushed over, her eyes wide with unadulterated greed as she leaned in close to inspect the sparkling gems. "Look at the clarity on these stones! Brody, darling, this must have cost at least a hundred thousand dollars!"

Martha turned around, casting a venomous, triumphant sneer straight at Declan.

"Do you see this, you useless parasite?" Martha cackled, waving her hand toward Nala's neck. "This is what a real man does for a woman! You've been married to my daughter for three years, and you haven't even bought her a silver ring from a pawn shop! You want to drag her into the gutter with your poverty!"

Nala shifted uncomfortably, a small flicker of hesitation crossing her face as she looked at Declan. "Mom, stop it... Declan tried his best with what he had." she said, adjusting the collar of her jacket, looking up at Declan with a proud, expectant glint in her eyes.

"What do you think of the necklace, Declan? Isn't it incredibly sweet of Brody to buy something so beautiful and expensive for our company's success?"

"Sure," Declan said softly, his voice dripping with dry, razor-sharp sarcasm. "There's absolutely nothing wrong with another man giving my wife affectionate, intimate gifts right in front of her husband."

Nala’s smile instantly vanished, her brows furrowing in annoyance. "Oh please, don't be dramatic. It's just business! Brody is celebrating our new enterprise alliance!"

Declan let out a low, cold scoff. "Of course, Business."

Nala’s face morphed into a deep scowl.

"Don't add petty, pathetic jealousy to your long streak of undesirable traits, Declan!" she snapped, her voice rising in sharp irritation as she crossed her arms. "It’s embarrassing! You're just bitter because Brody can afford things you couldn't even dream of!"

Declan looked at Nala, his dark eyes casually sweeping over the silver prongs and the overly uniform refractions of the stones then shifted his gaze directly onto Brody, whose smug smile was already starting to look a little stiff.

"Jealous? I have no reason to be jealous of a man who buys a cheap, cubic zirconia knock-off as diamond just to impress another man's wife."

The air in the executive suite froze instantly.

Brody’s heart skipped a sharp, violent beat.

How the hell did he know the diamond was fake?!

His pupils dilated in a flash of hidden panic, cold sweat pricking his lower back under his tailored suit.

Martha glared at Declan, "What did you just say?!" she shrieked, her face turning purple with explosive rage

"A fake?! How dare you! You broke, envious dog! How would a penniless freeloader like you know the difference between a real diamond and a fake one?!"

Ethan chuckled from the couch. "He probably thinks glass from a broken beer bottle is a crystal! If not for my sister's charity, a bum like you wouldn't have even breathed the air near true wealth!"

Nala glared at Declan with deep disgust, shaking her head. "You've really hit rock bottom, this time, Declan. Making up absurd lies just to ruin Brody's gesture? You're pitiful."

Declan didn't bother to argue. The diamonds in his vault could buy Sawyer Dynamics ten times over.

BZZZZ... BZZZZ...

Deep inside his coat, his private satellite phone vibrated with a sharp, double-pulse alert reserved only for top-tier sovereign emergencies.

Declan didn't say another word to the family. He simply turned on his heel and walked straight out of the executive suite, leaving Martha screaming behind him.

"That's right! Run away, you useless coward!" Martha shrieked after him as the heavy mahogany doors swung shut.

Declan stepped into the quiet service stairwell, pulled out the sleek black encrypted device, and pressed it to his ear.

"Report, Harrison," Declan said softly, his voice dropping into a lethal, sub-zero register.

"Commander," Vice-Director Harrison Grant’s voice came through the encrypted channel, crisp and urgent. "Our deep surveillance team just intercepted an offshore financial transmission from Cromwell Capital."

He paused.

“Cromwell Capital is over two billion dollars in debt to the Kurogane Syndicate, Commander. The exact foreign syndicate you've been tracking undercover for three years. Brody secretly leased the underlying data stream of your Aegis Core to them to cover his tracks."

"The Kurogane Syndicate..." Declan’s eyes darkened . "I’ve been hunting their core network for three years and Brody just handed me the lead on a silver platter. But he's not just digging his own grave, Harrison, he's throwing Nala and her family straight into the fire with him."

Declan sighed and looked out the window. For three years, he had protected Nala. Even now, the thought of her being swallowed alive by a lethal foreign syndicate made his chest tighten. She was foolish, arrogant, and blind but she was still his wife, and he wouldn't let her go to jail or get executed by syndicate enforcers when Brody’s house of cards collapsed.

He terminated the call and slid the phone into his coat. Turning on his heel, Declan marched back down the corridor toward Nala’s office to warn her before it was too late.
